\n\tThe Dal\u00ed Museum\u00a0in\u00a0St. Petersburg\u00a0is planning a major expansion expected to begin construction in 2026, with the new facilities slated to open in 2028.<\/p>\n
\n\tThe museum said the approximately 35,000-square-foot addition will cost an estimated $65 million and is intended to grow the exhibition spaces, create a dedicated learning center, and introduce new immersive experiences combining art and digital technology. The project will be designed and built by\u00a0the Beck Group, which also constructed the museum\u2019s current building that opened in 2011.<\/p>\n
\n\tFounded in 1982, the museum holds one of the largest collections of works by the Surrealist artist\u00a0Salvador Dal\u00ed\u00a0outside Spain. According to the institution, it has welcomed more than 10 million visitors since opening.<\/p>\n
\n\tExecutive director\u00a0Hank Hine\u00a0described the expansion as a way to accommodate growing audiences and deepen the museum\u2019s educational programming. \u201cIt\u2019s not about being bigger; it\u2019s about being bolder,\u201d Hine said in a statement announcing the project. \u201cThis next chapter allows us to move beyond existing limitations and create space, intellectually and physically, for deeper learning, more ambitious experiences and broader access.\u201d<\/p>\n
\n\tThe expansion will introduce flexible gallery environments for experiential exhibitions, a new learning center serving K-12 students and adult learners, and additional community-focused spaces designed for cultural programming and events. The design, referred to by the architects as \u201cReveal,\u201d will reinterpret elements of the museum\u2019s existing structure while incorporating new architectural features.<\/p>\n
\n\tTrevor Lamphier, a design principal at the Beck Group, said the building\u2019s exterior will \u201cplay with expectation,\u201d encouraging visitors to pause and look more closely at the architecture in a way that echoes Dal\u00ed\u2019s own visual strategies.<\/p>\n
\n\tThe project will also involve consultation with architect\u00a0Yann Weymouth, who designed the museum\u2019s original 2011 building.<\/p>\n
\n\tFunding for the expansion includes early support from\u00a0Visit St. Pete-Clearwater\u00a0through its \u201cFrom Visitors with Love\u201d initiative, which reinvests revenue from the county\u2019s tourist development tax.<\/p>\n
\n\tMuseum officials said the institution will remain open throughout construction. A 3D model of the proposed expansion will go on view May 2 as part of an exhibition examining the building\u2019s architectural evolution.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
