Jack Kirby\u2014who, with Joe Simon, created a host of iconic Marvel superheroes\u2014was the son of Austrian Jewish immigrants and later served in the US Army during the war. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAccording to the museum, Kirby conceived the now-famous\u00a0<em>Captain America<\/em>\u00a0cover as a not-so-veiled rebuke of the nation\u2019s isolationist stance amid the mounting Nazi threat. The effort proved influential: the widely circulated comic has been credited with helping raise public awareness in the United States of the escalating conflict in Europe.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cThis comic book holds enormous cultural and historical importance,\u201d Zachary Levine, director of the museum\u2019s Curatorial Affairs Division, said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tBeck also donated an original copy of\u00a0<em>Captain America Comics<\/em>\u00a0No. 46, another landmark issue whose cover depicts the hero liberating a concentration camp\u2014among the earliest portrayals of such a site in American popular culture.
