Brent North Sea crude, the international benchmark,\u00a0<span data-teams=\"true\">is reaching new record highs for the first time since July 2024 and is currently at just over $80 per barrel (March 4).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>Julian Peschel, Anne Serwas and DW&#8217;s Infographics team\u00a0contributed to this report.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Edited by: Gianna-Carina Gruen and\u00a0Rob Mudge<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>More data-driven stories by DW can be found <a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/data\/t-43091100\">here<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Following weeks of\u00a0negotiations between\u00a0US\u00a0and\u00a0Iranian\u00a0officials over\u00a0Iran&#8217;s\u00a0nuclear program, the <a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/united-states-of-america\/t-19065189\">United States<\/a> and <a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/israel\/t-19067044\">Israel<\/a> on February 28\u00a0launched a coordinated cooperation dubbed Operations <a rel=\"noopener follow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"external-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/articles\/2026\/03\/peace-through-strength-president-trump-launches-operation-epic-fury-to-crush-iranian-regime-end-nuclear-threat\/\" title='External link \u2014 \"Epic Fury'>&#8220;Epic Fury<\/a>&#8221; and &#8220;Roaring Lion&#8221; against the Iranian regime.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>To better understand the <a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/us-israel-war-with-iran\/t-76168615\">US-Israel war with Iran<\/a>, here is a breakdown of what happened and its consequences in maps and charts.<\/p>\n<p>The US and Israel have struck several Iranian military bases and government buildings.\u00a0Satellite images show the extent of the destruction caused by the joint\u00a0attacks.<\/p>\n<p>For instance, the residence of Iranian Supreme Leader <a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/ayatollah-ali-khamenei-the-man-who-wanted-to-destroy-israel\/a-76169184\">Ayatollah Ali Khamenei<\/a>\u00a0was heavily damaged. Khamenei and other high-ranking officials were killed in the attack.<\/p>\n<p>In Kermanshah, recent satellite images show damage to multiple buildings at a missile facility.<\/p>\n<p>The access to an underground missile facility near Kangavar appears to have been destroyed.<\/p>\n<p>As the US and Israel continue to attack targets in <a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/iran\/t-18996175\">Iran<\/a>, Tehran is retaliating with strikes against Israel and other countries, particularly those allied with Washington. Beyond <a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/iran-war-saudi-arabia-united-arab-emeriates-bahrain-qatar-involvement\/a-76175593\">the Gulf<\/a>, the war has now spilled into Lebanon.<\/p>\n<p>As US President <a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/us-president-donald-trump-russia-ukraine-israel-gaza-tariffs-trade-war\/t-19434433\">Donald Trump<\/a> met German Chancellor <a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/iran-war-german-chancellor-trump-talks-israel\/a-76155670\">Friedrich Merz in the White House<\/a> on March 3, Trump\u00a0boasted that &#8220;just about everything&#8217;s been knocked out&#8221; in Iran, including its navy, air force and air detection systems.<\/p>\n<p>He said\u00a0that the new waves of attacks had killed even Iranian figures\u00a0who could have taken over as new leaders.\u00a0&#8220;Most of the people we had in mind are dead.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><span data-teams=\"true\">Trump and other US government officials have given\u00a0different reasons for <a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/did-the-usisrael-strikes-on-iran-break-international-law\/a-76203543\">the strikes<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The US leader\u00a0said that a primary goal is\u00a0&#8220;to eliminate the Iranian nuclear program once and for all.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>When the bombing campaign began on Saturday,\u00a0Trump also urged Iranians to &#8220;take over your government&#8221; once the bombardment was over.\u00a0By Monday (March 2), US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, for example, claimed that the attacks on Iran are not a &#8220;<a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/the-checkered-history-of-us-regime-change-operations\/a-76200309\">regime change war<\/a>.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/why-iran-doesnt-have-a-political-alternative-to-khamenei\/a-75584787\">Ayatollah Ali Khamenei<\/a>, the supreme leader who <a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/khameneis-death-never-thought-i-would-see-this-day\/a-76175776\">ruled Iran for almost four decades<\/a>, was killed on the first day\u00a0of the coordinated US-Israeli attack. Other senior leaders were also targeted and killed.<\/p>\n<p>Now that the supreme leader is dead, <a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/iran-after-khamenei-what-happens-next\/a-76175399\">who is running Iran?<\/a> There are three men on the country&#8217;s interim leadership council: <a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/masoud-pezeshkian-what-to-expect-from-irans-new-president\/a-69595594\">President Masoud Pezeshkian<\/a>, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Gholamhossein Mohseni-Ejei and Alireza Arafi, a clerical member of the Guardian Council.<\/p>\n<p>Before his death, no successor to Khamenei had been named. Under Iran&#8217;s constitution, that task falls on the Assembly of Experts, an elected body of 88 senior clerics.<\/p>\n<p>Trump said\u00a0that the new waves of attacks had killed even Iranian figures\u00a0who could have taken over as new leaders.\u00a0&#8220;Most of the people we had in mind are dead.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Currently, the power vacuum appears to be filled by Iran&#8217;s top national security official, <a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/who-is-ali-larijani-the-unofficial-strongman-in-iran\/a-76202526\">Ali Larijani.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>While several high-ranking Iranian officials have been killed, Iran&#8217;s regime is still intact. Trump projected the war to last four to five weeks but said he was prepared &#8220;to go far longer than that&#8221;\u00a0if necessary.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s how the military strength of Iran, the US and Israel stacks up.<\/p>\n<p>On March 4, the Israeli military cautioned that Iran retains substantial capacity to launch missiles against Israel, despite ongoing strikes targeting missile launch sites in the Islamic Republic.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We will continue to strike the missile launchers and reduce the firing, but the regime still has significant capacity, and I would like to remind you that our defence is not impenetrable,&#8221; said military spokesman Brigadier General Effie Defrin during a televised briefing.<\/p>\n<p>The military also said in a statement it had struck\u00a0a facility &#8220;for the storage, production, and launch of ballistic missiles \u2014\u00a0including Ghadr missiles \u2014\u00a0in Isfahan in western Iran.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Recent satellite images show that a\u00a0building at a missile facility\u00a0near\u00a0Isfahan<em>\u00a0<\/em>was hit.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span data-teams=\"true\">Currently, there are no reliable figures available to provide a definite number of people killed in the strikes. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-teams=\"true\">For Iran, the estimates range from 500 to more than 800. For Oman, Iraq, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates (UAE)\u00a0and Kuwait, fewer than 10 deaths have been reported so far. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-teams=\"true\">Figures for <a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/iran-war-israel-lebanon-strikes-kurdish-talks\/live-76207066\">Lebanon<\/a> range from 10 to more than 50. Six US soldiers were killed in a strike on a US air base in Kuwait. For Israel, 11 casualties have been\u00a0reported.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Shipping traffic through the <a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/hormuz-strait-iran-israel-war-global-oil-supplies-persian-gulf-china-v2\/a-72952336\">Strait of Hormuz,<\/a> one of the world&#8217;s most important oil chokepoints, has been paralyzed. Revolutionary Guards General Ebrahim\u00a0Jabbari declared that Iran will &#8220;burn any ship&#8221; that tries to pass through the vital shipping route.<\/p>\n<p>In response,\u00a0Trump said the US\u00a0Navy could begin escorting oil tankers transiting the Strait if necessary.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>On March 4,\u00a0the Revolutionary Guards claimed\u00a0the Strait\u00a0is under the &#8220;full control&#8221; of Iran&#8217;s navy, according to\u00a0the semi-official Fars news agency.<\/p>\n<p>Following the escalating conflict in the Middle East, <a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/iran-attacks-on-gulf-oil-and-gas-sites-trigger-energy-fears\/a-76199281\">global oil prices, as expected, soared<\/a>.
