Below, we dive into the unlikely comeback of a centuries-old <span class=\"nowrap\">status symbol<\/span><\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<p><time datetime=\"2026-03-03T13:49:00+00:00\" class=\"timestamp\" title=\"03 March 2026\"><span class=\"month\">March<\/span>\u00a0<br \/>\n<span class=\"day\" data-day=\"3\">3,<\/span>\u00a0<br \/>\n<span class=\"year\">2026<\/span><\/time><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><time datetime=\"2026-03-03T13:49:00+00:00\" class=\"timestamp\" title=\"03 March 2026\"><span class=\"month\">March<\/span>\u00a0<br \/>\n<span class=\"day\" data-day=\"3\">3,<\/span>\u00a0<br \/>\n<span class=\"year\">2026<\/span><\/time><\/p>\n<div class=\"providers\">\n<div class=\"contributors\"><span class=\"contributor\" data-contributor-role=\"Text\"><span class=\"contributor-role\">Text<\/span><a class=\"contributor-name\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/user\/laurapitcher\">Laura Pitcher<\/a><\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"article-body-container\">\n<div class=\"article-body wrapper\">\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><span>Niko Haagenson, a content creator and makeup artist in New York, got a tiara in high school during her freshman year. \u201c<\/span><span>This was me pre-transition, and I wanted to rebel against the whole culture surrounding the classic homecoming court by being a (formerly) male homecoming princess,\u201d she says. \u201cI campaigned my ass off and probably won, and when I went out on the football field to accept my win and was booed by almost the entire stadium, which I took as a win while blowing kisses and waving.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Finding that same tiara hidden in her childhood bedroom recently felt like a full-circle moment: some of the people who once booed <\/span><span>Haagenson are now in her DMs asking for <\/span><span>makeup advice. She\u2019s also placed her old tiara firmly back on her head. \u201cI feel like a tiara is worn best with a simple outfit, as it makes it a little ironic,\u201d she says. \u201cThe tiara should be doing most of the talking.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Haagenson\u2019s approach to the everyday tiara is similar to Paris Hilton\u2019s. As the great-granddaughter of the Hilton hotel mogul <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@parishilton\/video\/7528844990315842871?lang=en\"><span>once said<\/span><\/a><span>, \u201cAlways act like you have an invisible tiara on your head.\u201d But in the Y2K era, tiaras were not always invisible. In 2001, <\/span><em><span>The Princess Diaries<\/span><\/em><span> came out, and everyone wanted to be the princess of Genovia. Hilton would wear a tiara on a night out, along with the likes of Nicole Richie and Courtney Love. Vivienne Westwood was fond of tiaras. So too was Madonna, who wore one worth 5 million dollars in a 1995 Versace Campaign, and another \u2013 an Edwardian antique \u2013 at her wedding to Guy Ritchie in 2002. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<figure class=\"inline-img expandable dev-view-hide\" data-img=\"65cf3c8a-cb60-4277-9255-b4020082e77c\" data-src=\"https:\/\/images-prod.dazeddigital.com\/2000\/azure\/dazed-prod\/1430\/9\/1439941.jpeg\" data-img-aspect-ratio-type=\"portrait\" data-img-aspect-ratio=\"0.75\"><span class=\"has-css-custom-props image-container\" data-aspect-ratio-type=\"portrait\"><span class=\"preserve-aspect-ratio\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Archie Madekwe\" class=\"img\" height=\"2729\" src=\"https:\/\/images-prod.dazeddigital.com\/786\/azure\/dazed-prod\/1430\/9\/1439941.jpeg\" width=\"2047\"><\/span><\/span><figcaption class=\"img-caption\"><span class=\"caption\">Archie Madekwe<\/span><span class=\"credit\">Courtesy of <span class=\"nowrap\">Julia Hobbs<\/span><\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><span>But, of course, predating the adoption of tiaras in pop culture is their history in high society. Jewelry historian Geoffrey Munn says that tiaras are traditionally the highest form of dress. \u201cThe signal for the wearing of them in the past was \u2018full evening dress\u2019 in the invitation,\u201d he says. \u201cThis meant women wore dresses to the ground, and tiaras.\u201d The tiara has, to this day, lingered on as a tradition for many brides, harkening back to the time when high society women would go to the altar wearing their family tiara, before swapping it for the <\/span><span>bridegroom\u2019s family tiara once they had married.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span>\u00a0\u201cI feel like a tiara is worn best with a simple outfit, as it makes it a little ironic. The tiara should be doing most of the talking\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span>Munn says the idea that tiaras were <\/span><span>emblems of rank, reserved for princesses and Duchesses, is misconstrued. \u201cIf you were invited to one of these receptions, you would wear a tiara because the occasion demanded it, not the rank,\u201d he says. \u201cSo, tiaras have been democratic for quite a long time.\u201d That said, there was a time before paparazzi and social media when royalty, according to Munn, would make a point of wearing this high-status dress while out in the public eye as a \u201cflashing of rank\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In 2015, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vogue.com\/article\/tiara-trend-spring-2016-runway\">the tiara experienced a high-fashion revival<\/a>, with three different takes sent down the Saint Laurent, Louis Vuitton and Miu Miu spring runways. A year later, in 2016, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vogue.com\/article\/rihanna-dolce-gabbana-tech-headphones-anti-album\">Rihanna teased her <em>Anti<\/em> album with a selfie<\/a> in a pair of gilded, crystal-encrusted Dolce &amp; Gabbana headphones, complete with an actual crown. With all this recent talk online of 2026 \u201cbeing 2016,\u201d it seems tiaras have been caught up in the nostalgia. Olivia Rodrigo wore one to celebrate her 23rd birthday with friends in February, and Jennifer Behr just <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jenniferbehr.com\/collections\/jennifer-behr-x-julia-hobbs?srsltid=AfmBOoomhdlGX_0W7dSjAUxan7nJF5UU2Yq9nhSEtm-6hHu2a3WB8Ivx\">released a line of \u201ceveryday tiaras\u201d<\/a> with British <em>Vogue<\/em>\u2019s contributing fashion features editor, Julia Hobbs.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"instagram-container embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"media-instagram\" data-script-depends=\"instagram-embeds\">\n<script async src=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/embed.js\"><\/script><\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><span>I called <\/span><span>Hobbs before her flight to Milan Fashion Week, as she was packing a boob tube, jeans and a shaggy coat. I had to ask: Are you bringing your tiaras? \u201cI have them all right here with me because I\u2019m trying to wear them on rotation,\u201d she told me. There are three tiaras in the collection. The <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/r\"><span>Julia<\/span><\/a><span> is the \u201csubtle\u201d one Hobbs named after her niece and wears with \u201csweatpants and uggs.\u201d The extra sparkly <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jenniferbehr.com\/collections\/jennifer-behr-x-julia-hobbs\/products\/jennifer-behr-x-julia-hobbs-lily-tiara-crystal?variant=Crystal&amp;\"><span>Lily<\/span><\/a><span> tiara is named after Lily Allen, who\u2019s recently been spotted wearing it, and the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jenniferbehr.com\/collections\/jennifer-behr-x-julia-hobbs\/products\/jennifer-behr-x-julia-hobbs-elodie-tiara-crystal-gunmetal?variant=Crystal%20Gunmetal&amp;\"><span>Elodie<\/span><\/a><span> is the biggest one, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DUO2GHaCNun\/?img_index=1\"><span>worn by Alexander Skarsg\u00e5rd<\/span><\/a><span> on Saturday Night Live.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The idea for the everyday tiara collection came to Hobbs while scouring the internet for a vintage, subtle tiara. \u201cAll roads led to <\/span><span>Jennifer Behr,\u201d she says. \u201cI would end up on <\/span><span>Pinterest, and her tiaras would keep coming up, but I had to ask myself, \u2018Am I, joyously single, about to buy a bridal tiara to wear with old skinny jeans and battered ballet flats?\u2019\u201d The answer was no, so she worked with <\/span><span>Behr to create rock and roll reminiscent tiaras instead. She threw a launch party at Climax Books in New York, where everyone had on a tiara. \u201cTiaras are just fun \u2013 it\u2019s almost an excuse to take a selfie, and be a <\/span><span>passenger princess,\u201d Hobbs says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span>\u201cTiaras are just fun \u2013 it\u2019s almost an excuse to take a selfie, and be a passenger princess\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span>The yearning for 2016, or at least the romanticised version of it, clearly has something to do with the still small-scale tiara revival. So too does the rise of the medieval aesthetic and the virality of the 2025 Louvre heist (and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@lily0e\/video\/7562921408636914974\">meme-ified stolen gems<\/a>). There\u2019s also young people\u2019s growing desire to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/life-culture\/article\/69270\/1\/whimsy-whimisical-tiktok-2025-trend\">inject whimsy into their day-to-day<\/a>. \u201cI have one tiara that I have had since I was around 8 years old,\u201d says Zoe Velasco, a student at Arizona State University. \u201cMy father bought it for me for about 13 dollars at Walmart, and I remember thinking it was the most luxurious thing in the world.\u201d She now wears it to school, with jeans and a t-shirt, or on outings with friends. \u201cIt adds a level of intrigue,\u201d she says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"media-tiktok\" data-id=\"7197911790464945413\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><span>Soon, Anne Hathaway will return to our screens for <\/span><em><span>The Princess Diaries 3<\/span><\/em><span>, and some will have their tiaras at the ready. <\/span><span>Velasco started wearing her childhood tiara again as a reminder of the days that felt more idealistic and hopeful. \u201cThe world is so crazy and scary that it\u2019s an easy means of escapism,\u201d she says. \u201cWearing a tiara is a simple way to tell the world, and yourself, that you are light, fun, confident and beautiful. Who wouldn&#8217;t want to feel that way?\u201d To wear a tiara in the early 2000s was a public declaration that you have princess (or main character) mentality. Arguably, that\u2019s the defining mentality of today, and an everyday tiara just cements it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>I sent Munn a photo of Lily Allen and Suki Waterhouse in the Jennifer Behr x Julia Hobbs everyday tiaras. \u201cI doubt this is a true revival\u2026\u2026sorry,\u201d he replied. She\u2019s also placed her old tiara firmly back on her head. \u201cI feel like a tiara is worn best with a simple outfit, as it makes it a little ironic,\u201d she says. \u201cThe tiara should be doing most of the talking.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Haagenson\u2019s approach to the everyday tiara is similar to Paris Hilton\u2019s. As the great-granddaughter of the Hilton hotel mogul <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@parishilton\/video\/7528844990315842871?lang=en\"><span>once said<\/span><\/a><span>, \u201cAlways act like you have an invisible tiara on your head.\u201d But in the Y2K era, tiaras were not always invisible. In 2001, <\/span><em><span>The Princess Diaries<\/span><\/em><span> came out, and everyone wanted to be the princess of Genovia. Hilton would wear a tiara on a night out, along with the likes of Nicole Richie and Courtney Love. Vivienne Westwood was fond of tiaras. The tiara should be doing most of the talking\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span>Munn says the idea that tiaras were <\/span><span>emblems of rank, reserved for princesses and Duchesses, is misconstrued. \u201cIf you were invited to one of these receptions, you would wear a tiara because the occasion demanded it, not the rank,\u201d he says. \u201cSo, tiaras have been democratic for quite a long time.\u201d That said, there was a time before paparazzi and social media when royalty, according to Munn, would make a point of wearing this high-status dress while out in the public eye as a \u201cflashing of rank\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In 2015, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vogue.com\/article\/tiara-trend-spring-2016-runway\">the tiara experienced a high-fashion revival<\/a>, with three different takes sent down the Saint Laurent, Louis Vuitton and Miu Miu spring runways. A year later, in 2016, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vogue.com\/article\/rihanna-dolce-gabbana-tech-headphones-anti-album\">Rihanna teased her <em>Anti<\/em> album with a selfie<\/a> in a pair of gilded, crystal-encrusted Dolce &amp; Gabbana headphones, complete with an actual crown. With all this recent talk online of 2026 \u201cbeing 2016,\u201d it seems tiaras have been caught up in the nostalgia. Olivia Rodrigo wore one to celebrate her 23rd birthday with friends in February, and Jennifer Behr just <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jenniferbehr.com\/collections\/jennifer-behr-x-julia-hobbs?srsltid=AfmBOoomhdlGX_0W7dSjAUxan7nJF5UU2Yq9nhSEtm-6hHu2a3WB8Ivx\">released a line of \u201ceveryday tiaras\u201d<\/a> with British <em>Vogue<\/em>\u2019s contributing fashion features editor, Julia Hobbs.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"instagram-container embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"media-instagram\" data-script-depends=\"instagram-embeds\">\n<script async src=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/embed.js\"><\/script><\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><span>I called <\/span><span>Hobbs before her flight to Milan Fashion Week, as she was packing a boob tube, jeans and a shaggy coat. I had to ask: Are you bringing your tiaras? \u201cI have them all right here with me because I\u2019m trying to wear them on rotation,\u201d she told me. There are three tiaras in the collection. The <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/r\"><span>Julia<\/span><\/a><span> is the \u201csubtle\u201d one Hobbs named after her niece and wears with \u201csweatpants and uggs.\u201d The extra sparkly <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jenniferbehr.com\/collections\/jennifer-behr-x-julia-hobbs\/products\/jennifer-behr-x-julia-hobbs-lily-tiara-crystal?variant=Crystal&amp;\"><span>Lily<\/span><\/a><span> tiara is named after Lily Allen, who\u2019s recently been spotted wearing it, and the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jenniferbehr.com\/collections\/jennifer-behr-x-julia-hobbs\/products\/jennifer-behr-x-julia-hobbs-elodie-tiara-crystal-gunmetal?variant=Crystal%20Gunmetal&amp;\"><span>Elodie<\/span><\/a><span> is the biggest one, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DUO2GHaCNun\/?img_index=1\"><span>worn by Alexander Skarsg\u00e5rd<\/span><\/a><span> on Saturday Night Live.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The idea for the everyday tiara collection came to Hobbs while scouring the internet for a vintage, subtle tiara. \u201cAll roads led to <\/span><span>Jennifer Behr,\u201d she says. \u201cI would end up on <\/span><span>Pinterest, and her tiaras would keep coming up, but I had to ask myself, \u2018Am I, joyously single, about to buy a bridal tiara to wear with old skinny jeans and battered ballet flats?\u2019\u201d The answer was no, so she worked with <\/span><span>Behr to create rock and roll reminiscent tiaras instead. So too does the rise of the medieval aesthetic and the virality of the 2025 Louvre heist (and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@lily0e\/video\/7562921408636914974\">meme-ified stolen gems<\/a>). There\u2019s also young people\u2019s growing desire to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/life-culture\/article\/69270\/1\/whimsy-whimisical-tiktok-2025-trend\">inject whimsy into their day-to-day<\/a>. \u201cI have one tiara that I have had since I was around 8 years old,\u201d says Zoe Velasco, a student at Arizona State University. \u201cMy father bought it for me for about 13 dollars at Walmart, and I remember thinking it was the most luxurious thing in the world.\u201d She now wears it to school, with jeans and a t-shirt, or on outings with friends. \u201cIt adds a level of intrigue,\u201d she says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"media-tiktok\" data-id=\"7197911790464945413\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><span>Soon, Anne Hathaway will return to our screens for <\/span><em><span>The Princess Diaries 3<\/span><\/em><span>, and some will have their tiaras at the ready. <\/span><span>Velasco started wearing her childhood tiara again as a reminder of the days that felt more idealistic and hopeful. \u201cThe world is so crazy and scary that it\u2019s an easy means of escapism,\u201d she says. \u201cWearing a tiara is a simple way to tell the world, and yourself, that you are light, fun, confident and beautiful.
