I\u2019m no numerologist, but that feels like a good sign: an angel number, the kind of coincidence that sets the tone before a word is spoken. Inside, she sits by the piano, golden locks perfectly in place, make-up immaculate, smoking one cigarette after another.<\/p>\n<p>I am meeting her on the day her single, \u201cHi My Love\u201d, drops \u2013 a song that\u2019s sparked a genuine existential crisis. \u201cIt\u2019s scary. It\u2019s an old song, about two years old,but I don\u2019t feel like I can let go of the version of myself who wrote it without it being out. It\u2019s kind of selfish.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"960\" height=\"1200\" src=\"https:\/\/media.wonderlandmagazine.com\/uploads\/2026\/03\/SOFIA-AND-THE-ANTOINETTES-2-960x1200.jpg\" alt=\"The Making of Sofia and the Antoinettes\" class=\"wp-image-288380\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Bodysuit, shorts &amp; socks PAULINE DUJANCOURT; shoes JIMMY CHOO; ring and earrings Sofia\u2019s own.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201dMusic has always been the soundtrack of her life. Born in Derbyshire, Sofia moved as a child to the sunny shores of Mallorca after her mum \u201ccouldn\u2019t stand it there.\u201d Her father, a devoted fan of Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen, and The Rolling Stones, filled their home with songs that shaped her earliest memories. \u201cI remember being eight and reading the lyrics to \u201cFamous Blue Raincoat\u201d, thinking, \u2018Why did he take a lock of Jane\u2019s hair?\u2019\u201d she recalls. When I ask when music became serious for her, she\u2019s blunt: \u201cIt was always serious.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In school, Sofia lived in the music department \u2013 a space where she could immerse in her practice. She began playing the piano at five and wrote her first song at 11. \u201cI just always knew,\u201d she says, when asked why music called to her so early. \u201cI actually don\u2019t know. [It was a] need. I got used to processing my emotions that way,and then I couldn\u2019t stop.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"960\" height=\"1200\" src=\"https:\/\/media.wonderlandmagazine.com\/uploads\/2026\/03\/SOFIA-AND-THE-ANTOINETTES-3-960x1200.jpg\" alt=\"The Making of Sofia and the Antoinettes\" class=\"wp-image-288381\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Full look DIOR.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>Back in London at 18, Sofia enrolled at Goldsmiths University, where her artist name, Sofia and the Antoinettes, was born from a mix of her tutor\u2019s insistence she present a concept and her own desire to reflect the multiplicity of herself. One morning, having watched Sofia Coppola\u2019s Marie Antoinette unprepared, she suggested, \u201cWhat if I am Sofia and the Antoinettes?\u201d It stuck.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0From the way she smokes to the way she talks, Sofia seems born to perform. She admits to having done \u201cone harp lesson, just so I can say I did one harp lesson,\u201d but this isn\u2019t a character she\u2019s playing \u2013 it\u2019s her, 24 hours a day. \u201cI struggle to do things without an audience. Alone, I might do nothing for hours; with someone else, I perform.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"960\" height=\"1200\" src=\"https:\/\/media.wonderlandmagazine.com\/uploads\/2026\/03\/SOFIA-AND-THE-ANTOINETTES-4-960x1200.jpg\" alt=\"The Making of Sofia and the Antoinettes\" class=\"wp-image-288382\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Dress TORY BURCH; earrings Sofia\u2019s own.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>Naturally, she thrives in the limelight. She curated her own residency at Bar La Do\u00f1a in Stoke Newington in summer 2025, followed by recently headlining BBC\u2019s Introducing Ones to Watch night this January. Her love for performance, she says, comes from \u201cserotonin, adrenaline, being the centre of attention, all the things you\u2019re not supposed to say.\u201d Her dream venue? \u201cCarnegie Hall,\u201d the legendary stage where artists from Tchaikovsky to The Beatles have performed.<\/p>\n<p>What sets Sofia apart, however, is her love for words. In her living room, books surround me. She writes extensively, often beginning with poetry or short stories. \u201cWriting, to me, is the most important part. When I listen to music, I hear the lyrics louder than everything else.\u201d Tracey Emin, Joan Didion, Sylvia Plath, Eve Babitz \u2013 they reflect the honesty she strives for in her lyrics. \u201cHere\u2019s my diary. Everybody read it.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"960\" height=\"1200\" src=\"https:\/\/media.wonderlandmagazine.com\/uploads\/2026\/03\/SOFIA-AND-THE-ANTOINETTES-5-960x1200.jpg\" alt=\"The Making of Sofia and the Antoinettes\" class=\"wp-image-288383\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Dress DREAMING ELI; shoes CHRISTIAN LOUBOUTIN.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>Throughout our conversation, she constantly references other artists \u2013 authors, directors, musicians \u2013 a generosity of influence many creatives in the music industry might shy away from. \u201cWe [musicians] don\u2019t create music. We sculpt sounds and words from other things we like,\u201d she tells me, a sentiment shared by a friend from Los Angeles that has stayed with her.<\/p>\n<p>She doesn\u2019t overthink who her music is for. \u201cYes,\u201d she replies simply, \u201cthe girls and the gays.\u201d In her mind is Lady Gaga giving it her all at Lollapalooza in 2007, performing in front of a small daytime crowd wearing nothing but heels and underwear. She is as deliberate about her image as she is her music: \u201cI have a deep, deep-rooted fear of being forgotten. So I guess that\u2019s another way to express, \u2018I swear I\u2019m not.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"960\" height=\"1200\" src=\"https:\/\/media.wonderlandmagazine.com\/uploads\/2026\/03\/SOFIA-AND-THE-ANTOINETTES-6-960x1200.jpg\" alt=\"The Making of Sofia and the Antoinettes\" class=\"wp-image-288384\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Full look DIOR.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>I mentioned a photograph on her Instagram from three years ago that reads: \u201cleaving the house is a performance,\u201d and how it feels like the perfect summary of her as an artist. She smiles. \u201cThat\u2019s actually the title of my next EP.\u201d While her work is intensely personal, she is also working on a letters project: a collection of songs inspired by love letters she found at a flea market, experimenting with writing from the perspective of women from the 1950s.<\/p>\n<p>Her goals for the coming year are ambitious. \u201cI want to play a lot more shows. I want to tour \u2013 I\u2019m excited for that. I want to put out an obscene amount of music. I want people to be like, how the fuck have we had this many releases? Oh, and I want to pass my driving test \u2013 the sixth time\u2019s the lucky one.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"960\" height=\"1200\" src=\"https:\/\/media.wonderlandmagazine.com\/uploads\/2026\/03\/SOFIA-AND-THE-ANTOINETTES-7-960x1200.jpg\" alt=\"The Making of Sofia and the Antoinettes\" class=\"wp-image-288385\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Dress DREAMING ELI; shoes CHRISTIAN LOUBOUTIN.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>How does she plan to make all this happen? \u201cI think what you put out into the universe comes back to you. It\u2019s like that with any love you give throughout the day \u2013 you\u2019ll get it back, from other people, from things, from luck. I think actually, luck is a different thing. Luck is very real. I\u2019m manifesting, and I\u2019m in control of striving for this honesty, of depicting my experience, my reality. And so I\u2019m manifesting that for myself.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As the conversation winds down, I ask if there\u2019s anything else she wants to share.
