In <em>The Testament of Ann Lee<\/em>, the 40-year-old American actor not only dances and sings about celibacy, but she embodies a female Jesus who\u2019s so charismatic she launches a religious movement. Directed by Mona Fastvold, the 18th century-set, 35mm-shot musical is a mesmerising retelling of how a young woman, Ann Lee, left Manchester to form the Shakers in rural New York. Unless you ingested magic mushrooms while watching Seyfried in <em>Mamma Mia!<\/em>, you\u2019ve never seen anything like it before.<\/p>\n<p>After all, <em>The Testament of Ann Lee<\/em> defies genre definitions. It\u2019s a forward-thinking movie about equality set in the past. It\u2019s a biopic that delves into magical realism. It\u2019s an Oscar-y premise that\u2019s so experimental it\u2019s scared off Oscar voters. It\u2019s arguably not even a musical: the diligently choreographed songs are part of how the Shakers (initially called the Shaking Quakers) pray on a daily basis.<\/p>\n<p>In a London hotel in December, I ask Seyfried and Fastvold if to be a brilliant actor in weird films you need to be a weird person yourself. \u201cDefinitely,\u201d says Fastvold. \u201cI think so,\u201d says Seyfried, who\u2019s so relaxed she earlier took off her shoes to put her feet up on the table. \u201cThe weirdness comes from the appreciation for the abstract, and the part of life that\u2019s absurd. The ego needs to go out the window for singing, for every artistic expression. You have to be able to go where you\u2019re asked to go \u2013 and then go further. When I was speaking in tongues in this movie, I could pretty much do anything. It\u2019s hard to be fearless, but when you open that gate, it\u2019s euphoric.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"src-youtube video-container embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"media-youtube\" data-id=\"pnj_ABgNJIY\"><span class=\"preserve-aspect-ratio\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" allowfullscreen frameborder height=\"422\" scrolling=\"no\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/pnj_ABgNJIY\" webkitallowfullscreen width=\"750\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p>In <em>Mean Girls<\/em> and <em>First Reformed<\/em>, Seyfried played memorable side characters. She\u2019s previously lamented that when she\u2019s cast as a lead in a film, it\u2019s usually the less juicy role. However, Ann Lee, who\u2019s perceived to be the second coming, is in practically every scene. \u201cShe\u2019s so multifaceted,\u201d says Seyfried. \u201cIf you can relate to a character, and they get weird, it opens you up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEveryone\u2019s peculiar if you get to know them,\u201d says Fastvold. \u201cThe key is to take the audience on a journey that feels not weird, but it feels human. Her strangeness feels relatable. Even if you don\u2019t agree with her choices, you understand them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fastvold, a 44-year-old Norwegian filmmaker, wrote the screenplay with her partner, Brady Corbet. Like <em>The Brutalist<\/em>, which Fastvold also cowrote, <em>The Testament of Ann Lee<\/em> is an epic period drama somehow shot for under $10 million. One sequence on a ship was accomplished by the cast swaying left and right on stationary floorboards. Elsewhere, the aesthetic pleasures are heightened if you watch it, like I did, projected on 70mm. Fastvold gets lost on such a long tangent about celluloid capturing the details in blacks and blues that Seyfried interjects with: \u201cOK, Brady! I\u2019m kidding. But that\u2019s what you guys talk about at four in the morning \u2013 lenses. The other night in the car, Brady was talking to Joe [Alwyn] about\u2026 I don\u2019t even know.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cAt the time, you were your husband\u2019s property. Celibacy was a way of breaking apart the idea of what relationships between men and women are\u201c<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a new camera we\u2019re trying to create with some technology,\u201d says Fastvold.<\/p>\n<p>As a child, Ann feels unfulfilled by Christianity. Her curiosity in God, though, is sparked by a visit to purging sessions run by Jane Wardley (Stacy Martin): through flailing arms and sharp exhales of breath, the body spiritually cleanses itself. In crowded rooms, the prayers look spellbinding, fun, and exhausting. They\u2019re like dance floors but with a religious bent: it\u2019s during one session that Ann finds herself drawn to Abraham (Christopher Abbott), the pair shaking their limbs and hips in close proximity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s descriptions of Shakers dancing for four days that end with them passing out,\u201d says Fastvold. \u201cBut ultimately all the movement is prayer. It\u2019s about ridding yourself of whatever sin, guilt, or pain is in your body, and helping others. You take their pain, pull it into your body, and push it out of you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe scary part is that we don\u2019t have footage of anybody,\u201d says Seyfried. \u201cNot until the 1900s. You have a lot of liberties, but you want to stay true to something. There\u2019s nothing about her that\u2019s like me in the way I move naturally.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ann is such an enigma, you never quite know what\u2019s going on behind Seyfried\u2019s famously wide eyes. As a child, she\u2019s disgusted by the sight of her parents fornicating. Married to Abraham, Ann gives birth to four children who all die within months. Taking disciples to America, Ann claims that sex creates distance from God, and thus they should all adhere to celibacy. In the same breath, Ann proposes a society where every race and gender are equal.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<figure class=\"inline-img expandable dev-view-hide\" data-img=\"38fd9491-a267-4880-a5ef-b40100ade274\" data-src=\"https:\/\/images-prod.dazeddigital.com\/2000\/azure\/dazed-prod\/1430\/9\/1439809.jpg\" data-img-aspect-ratio-type=\"landscape\" data-img-aspect-ratio=\"2.41\"><span class=\"has-css-custom-props image-container\" data-aspect-ratio-type=\"landscape\"><span class=\"preserve-aspect-ratio\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"The Testament of Ann Lee\" class=\"img\" height=\"1246\" src=\"https:\/\/images-prod.dazeddigital.com\/786\/azure\/dazed-prod\/1430\/9\/1439809.jpg\" width=\"3000\"><\/span><\/span><figcaption class=\"img-caption\"><span class=\"credit\">The Testament of <span class=\"nowrap\">Ann Lee<\/span><\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p>\u201cCelibacy is insane,\u201d says Seyfried. \u201cIt\u2019s bullshit. But the film is timely. Everything she preached was to bring people together, and to create a utopian society where everyone is equal. The celibacy aspect comes from her trauma. Having sex, having a baby, and losing it \u2013 I understand that. But the underlying thing is: how do we protect and nurture each other? Community is everything. Socialism is this beautiful idea, but we all have to promise each other that we\u2019re going to do our best.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt the time, you were your husband\u2019s property,\u201d says Fastvold. \u201cCelibacy was a way of breaking apart the idea of what relationships between men and women are. It\u2019s like, \u2018I\u2019m going to take out sexuality, childbirth, and pregnancy. I\u2019m going to create an even playing field.\u2019 My interpretation is, it spawned from great trauma, but others followed because they felt like a brother and sister can be equal. It\u2019s like children without sexuality who are friends and can respect each other.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After Ann\u2019s death, word spread about her visions, and the Era of Manifestations (1837 to the 1850s) saw up to 4,000 Shakers joining the cause. However, as the film\u2019s end credits indicate, there were only \u201ctwo believers\u201d in early 2025. Fastvold resisted contacting the pair before the shoot. \u201cI\u2019d have been too scared of doing anything to offend them, which I hope I didn\u2019t,\u201d she says. \u201cI love the story of Mother Ann Lee, and wanted to tell it in a respectful way. But I\u2019m not a Shaker, and I\u2019m not a believer. It\u2019s an interpretation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the gap between the Venice premiere and our interview, the number increased by 50 per cent to three believers. Fastvold explains that the end credits were hand-painted, shot on film, and scanned back in. \u201cIt took a long time to change the \u2018two\u2019 to \u2018three\u2019 [for the new print],\u201d says Seyfried. \u201cIt had to be painted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Just as enthralling are the opening credits that space out text around the frame alongside spirit drawings. Combined with an early musical number, the film hypnotises the viewer within its first 10 minutes. Upon hearing my description, Fastvold notes that viewers tell her the introduction makes them feel like they\u2019re high. \u201cThe film\u2019s set in the past and feels like it\u2019s on drugs,\u201d says Seyfried. \u201cIt\u2019s psychedelic.\u201d Fastvold imitates the breathing exercises, explaining, \u201cIf you do that long enough, you start feeling high.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was able to experience the exhaustion of dancing for hours and hours and hours in the heat,\u201d says Seyfried. \u201cYou hit a new height of energy because you get a second wind, and it\u2019s so physical that you almost feel like you can fly. In <em>The Testament of Ann Lee<\/em>, the 40-year-old American actor not only dances and sings about celibacy, but she embodies a female Jesus who\u2019s so charismatic she launches a religious movement. Directed by Mona Fastvold, the 18th century-set, 35mm-shot musical is a mesmerising retelling of how a young woman, Ann Lee, left Manchester to form the Shakers in rural New York. Unless you ingested magic mushrooms while watching Seyfried in <em>Mamma Mia!<\/em>, you\u2019ve never seen anything like it before.<\/p>\n<p>After all, <em>The Testament of Ann Lee<\/em> defies genre definitions. It\u2019s a forward-thinking movie about equality set in the past. It\u2019s a biopic that delves into magical realism. It\u2019s an Oscar-y premise that\u2019s so experimental it\u2019s scared off Oscar voters. It\u2019s arguably not even a musical: the diligently choreographed songs are part of how the Shakers (initially called the Shaking Quakers) pray on a daily basis.<\/p>\n<p>In a London hotel in December, I ask Seyfried and Fastvold if to be a brilliant actor in weird films you need to be a weird person yourself. \u201cDefinitely,\u201d says Fastvold. \u201cI think so,\u201d says Seyfried, who\u2019s so relaxed she earlier took off her shoes to put her feet up on the table. \u201cThe weirdness comes from the appreciation for the abstract, and the part of life that\u2019s absurd. The ego needs to go out the window for singing, for every artistic expression. You have to be able to go where you\u2019re asked to go \u2013 and then go further. When I was speaking in tongues in this movie, I could pretty much do anything. It\u2019s hard to be fearless, but when you open that gate, it\u2019s euphoric.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"src-youtube video-container embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"media-youtube\" data-id=\"pnj_ABgNJIY\"><span class=\"preserve-aspect-ratio\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" allowfullscreen frameborder height=\"422\" scrolling=\"no\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/pnj_ABgNJIY\" webkitallowfullscreen width=\"750\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p>In <em>Mean Girls<\/em> and <em>First Reformed<\/em>, Seyfried played memorable side characters. She\u2019s previously lamented that when she\u2019s cast as a lead in a film, it\u2019s usually the less juicy role. However, Ann Lee, who\u2019s perceived to be the second coming, is in practically every scene. \u201cShe\u2019s so multifaceted,\u201d says Seyfried. \u201cIf you can relate to a character, and they get weird, it opens you up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEveryone\u2019s peculiar if you get to know them,\u201d says Fastvold. \u201cThe key is to take the audience on a journey that feels not weird, but it feels human. Her strangeness feels relatable. Even if you don\u2019t agree with her choices, you understand them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fastvold, a 44-year-old Norwegian filmmaker, wrote the screenplay with her partner, Brady Corbet. Like <em>The Brutalist<\/em>, which Fastvold also cowrote, <em>The Testament of Ann Lee<\/em> is an epic period drama somehow shot for under $10 million. One sequence on a ship was accomplished by the cast swaying left and right on stationary floorboards. Elsewhere, the aesthetic pleasures are heightened if you watch it, like I did, projected on 70mm. Fastvold gets lost on such a long tangent about celluloid capturing the details in blacks and blues that Seyfried interjects with: \u201cOK, Brady! I\u2019m kidding. But that\u2019s what you guys talk about at four in the morning \u2013 lenses. The other night in the car, Brady was talking to Joe [Alwyn] about\u2026 I don\u2019t even know.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cAt the time, you were your husband\u2019s property. Celibacy was a way of breaking apart the idea of what relationships between men and women are\u201c<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a new camera we\u2019re trying to create with some technology,\u201d says Fastvold.<\/p>\n<p>As a child, Ann feels unfulfilled by Christianity. Her curiosity in God, though, is sparked by a visit to purging sessions run by Jane Wardley (Stacy Martin): through flailing arms and sharp exhales of breath, the body spiritually cleanses itself. In crowded rooms, the prayers look spellbinding, fun, and exhausting. They\u2019re like dance floors but with a religious bent: it\u2019s during one session that Ann finds herself drawn to Abraham (Christopher Abbott), the pair shaking their limbs and hips in close proximity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s descriptions of Shakers dancing for four days that end with them passing out,\u201d says Fastvold. \u201cBut ultimately all the movement is prayer. It\u2019s about ridding yourself of whatever sin, guilt, or pain is in your body, and helping others. You take their pain, pull it into your body, and push it out of you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe scary part is that we don\u2019t have footage of anybody,\u201d says Seyfried. \u201cNot until the 1900s. You have a lot of liberties, but you want to stay true to something. There\u2019s nothing about her that\u2019s like me in the way I move naturally.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ann is such an enigma, you never quite know what\u2019s going on behind Seyfried\u2019s famously wide eyes. As a child, she\u2019s disgusted by the sight of her parents fornicating. Married to Abraham, Ann gives birth to four children who all die within months. Taking disciples to America, Ann claims that sex creates distance from God, and thus they should all adhere to celibacy. But the film is timely. Everything she preached was to bring people together, and to create a utopian society where everyone is equal. The celibacy aspect comes from her trauma. Having sex, having a baby, and losing it \u2013 I understand that. But the underlying thing is: how do we protect and nurture each other? Community is everything. Socialism is this beautiful idea, but we all have to promise each other that we\u2019re going to do our best.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt the time, you were your husband\u2019s property,\u201d says Fastvold. \u201cCelibacy was a way of breaking apart the idea of what relationships between men and women are. It\u2019s like, \u2018I\u2019m going to take out sexuality, childbirth, and pregnancy. I\u2019m going to create an even playing field.\u2019 My interpretation is, it spawned from great trauma, but others followed because they felt like a brother and sister can be equal. It\u2019s like children without sexuality who are friends and can respect each other.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After Ann\u2019s death, word spread about her visions, and the Era of Manifestations (1837 to the 1850s) saw up to 4,000 Shakers joining the cause. However, as the film\u2019s end credits indicate, there were only \u201ctwo believers\u201d in early 2025. Fastvold resisted contacting the pair before the shoot. \u201cI\u2019d have been too scared of doing anything to offend them, which I hope I didn\u2019t,\u201d she says. \u201cI love the story of Mother Ann Lee, and wanted to tell it in a respectful way. But I\u2019m not a Shaker, and I\u2019m not a believer. It\u2019s an interpretation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the gap between the Venice premiere and our interview, the number increased by 50 per cent to three believers. Fastvold explains that the end credits were hand-painted, shot on film, and scanned back in. \u201cIt took a long time to change the \u2018two\u2019 to \u2018three\u2019 [for the new print],\u201d says Seyfried. \u201cIt had to be painted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Just as enthralling are the opening credits that space out text around the frame alongside spirit drawings. Combined with an early musical number, the film hypnotises the viewer within its first 10 minutes. Upon hearing my description, Fastvold notes that viewers tell her the introduction makes them feel like they\u2019re high. \u201cThe film\u2019s set in the past and feels like it\u2019s on drugs,\u201d says Seyfried. \u201cIt\u2019s psychedelic.\u201d Fastvold imitates the breathing exercises, explaining, \u201cIf you do that long enough, you start feeling high.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was able to experience the exhaustion of dancing for hours and hours and hours in the heat,\u201d says Seyfried. \u201cYou hit a new height of energy because you get a second wind, and it\u2019s so physical that you almost feel like you can fly.
