Pakistani jets near Kabul were targeted by Afghan Taliban on Sunday, with blasts and gunfire rocking the city, officials said.<\/p>\n

The explosions in Afghanistan’s<\/a> capital come as the\u00a0most recent clashes between the two countries entered a fourth day<\/a>. The current escalation marks the heaviest cross-border fighting in years,\u00a0 raising fears of a protracted conflict.<\/a><\/p>\n

On Sunday, explosions were heard across parts of Kabul before sunrise. They were followed by bursts \u200cof gunfire, according to the Reuters news agency. It was not clear if the blasts caused any casualties.<\/p>\n

Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid, however, said that “Kabul residents should not be \u200cconcerned.”<\/p>\n

“Air \u200cdefense attacks were carried out in Kabul against Pakistani aircraft,” Mujahid said.<\/p>\n

Pakistan<\/a> has acknowledged bombing key Afghan cities on Friday including the capital,\u00a0Kabul, and the southern city of Kandahar, where Afghan Taliban Supreme Leader Hibatullah Akhundzada is based.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0AFP cited\u00a0witnesses as saying air strikes had hit the Bagram air base area,<\/a>\u00a0previously a US stronghold, in the country’s southeast.<\/p>\n

Taliban officials boosted security in central Kabul on Sunday evening, with increased checks on cars, AFP reported.<\/p>\n

The Afghan Taliban launched announced an offensive\u00a0over the 2,600-km (1,615-mile) border after accusing Pakistan of targeting civilians inside Afghanistan.<\/p>\n

Pakistan rejected the claim, saying its forces had just targeted militants. Islamabad, in turn, insists that\u00a0that the Taliban-led regime is sheltering extremists that are conducting terror strikes in Pakistan, which Taliban officials deny.<\/p>\n

Diplomatic efforts led by Saudi Arabia and Qatar have failed to secure a ceasefire so far.<\/p>\n

Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif canceled a scheduled\u00a0visit to \u200cRussia amid the fighting.\u00a0Moscow has called on both Afghanistan and Pakistan \u200cto cease cross-border attacks and \u2060seek diplomacy to resolve their differences.<\/p>\n

Attaullah Tarar, Pakistan’s information minister, said Pakistani forces have killed some 415 Taliban Afghan soldiers<\/a>, while allegedly only 12 of its soldiers had been killed.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Taliban government’s deputy spokesman, Hamdullah Fitrat, said that by their calculations, over 80 Pakistani soldiers were killed and 27 military posts captured.<\/p>\n
