Arrival in the Canadian Rockies<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n

We had long dreamed of skiing at Banff Ski Big3<\/a>, and on this year\u2019s ski safari, we finally pointed the truck north from the United States toward the heart of the Canadian Rockies.<\/strong> The welcome was immediate and dramatic: heavy snow-covered roads, strong winds, and an avalanche that closed our planned route, forcing a reroute through even more jaw-dropping scenery. Not exactly a hardship.<\/p>\n

If you\u2019ve never driven into Banff<\/a>, it\u2019s a sensory overload. <\/strong>Razor-edged peaks reminiscent of the Italian Dolomites, glacier-carved valleys that echo Yosemite, and a constant play of light and shadow that shifts with every bend in the road. Photos don\u2019t do it justice. I am at a loss for a more refined description of the beauty, so I\u2019ll borrow a phrase from Barney the Dinosaur: the scenery is \u201cSuper-Dee-Duper.\u201d<\/p>\n

We also arrived in the teeth of a serious cold snap\u2014serious, at least, for a couple of Texans.<\/strong> The kind of cold where your nose hairs freeze on the inhale and every step across packed snow crunches like Styrofoam. Car tires thudded over frozen ruts in the road. It was invigorating. By Banff Ski Big3 standards, we were told, it was just another winter week.<\/p>\n

On our first ski morning, the forecast called for a \u201cwarming trend\u201d to -12\u00b0F (-25\u00b0C) at 8:00 a.m., climbing all the way to 0\u00b0F by late morning.<\/strong> We quickly broke out the cold-weather accoutrements: extra base layers, electric heated Lenz socks, and hand warmers tucked into gloves. In full honesty, we delayed our start until 10:30 a.m. and chose the closest and smallest of the Banff Ski Big3 resorts for our cold-shortened first day: Mt. Norquay<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Mt. Norquay: Where Racers Are Made<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n

Compact, classic, and proudly local, Mt. Norquay feels like a throwback in the best possible way.<\/strong> Looker\u2019s left features steep, bumped-up runs that demand attention. The center houses the lodge and a welcoming beginner zone. Looker\u2019s right rolls into punchy blue cruisers and groomed blacks that fall straight down the fall line.<\/p>\n

It didn\u2019t take long to understand why so many Canadian ski racers cut their teeth here.<\/strong> The blues and blacks are steep, consistent, nearly top-to-bottom\u2014ideal for race training. Lifts spin efficiently back to the summit, making lap-after-lap sessions seamless for these future stars. During our visit, a youth race camp was in full swing, offering a glimpse of the next generation of Canadian speed demons. For us, Mt. Norquay was the perfect introduction: a half-day of legit pitch, cold, crisp air, and a reminder that small hills can pack a serious punch.<\/p>\n

The Town of Banff: National Park Chic<\/span><\/h3>\n

Set inside Banff National Park<\/a>, the town of Banff strikes a rare balance between global destination and intimate mountain village.<\/strong> Strict building codes\u2014no structure taller than three stories\u2014preserve sightlines to the surrounding peaks. The architecture leans mountain-chic, all timber and stone, and the entire town is refreshingly walkable. If Aspen and Whistler had a baby, it might look something like Banff.<\/p>\n

Public transportation makes skiing blissfully simple.<\/strong> Regular shuttles connect the town to each SkiBig3 resort, dropping you at the base and returning you home without the hassle of parking. Between ski days, we wandered to caf\u00e9s, gear shops, markets, and even a laundromat\u2014conveniently located next to a wine store, which felt like thoughtful urban planning for ski travelers on safari.<\/p>\n
