President Donald Trump on Friday ordered all US\u00a0federal agencies to phase out their use of AI technology from the firm Anthropic. The move follows a public dispute between Anthropic and the Pentagon<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In the back and forth with the US government, Anthropic had sought guarantees that its AI would not be used for fully autonomous weapons or for mass domestic surveillance. The\u00a0Pentagon has claimed to have no interest in such use of the technology.<\/p>\n

CEO Dario Amodei responded to the ultimatum\u00a0by saying his company “cannot in good conscience accede”\u00a0to the Defense Department’s demands.<\/p>\n

Democrats have criticized the Trump administration’s handling of the matter. Senator\u00a0Mark Warner of Virginia, the top Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee, said\u00a0the move “raises serious concerns about whether national security decisions are being driven by careful analysis or political considerations.”<\/p>\n

Hegseth slams Anthropic’s ‘betrayal’<\/h2>\n

Pentagon\u00a0Sean Parnell said the agency\u00a0wants to “use Anthropic\u2019s model for all lawful purposes,” but he and other officials have not provided any details on how they would use the technology.<\/p>\n

“Anthropic delivered a master class in arrogance and betrayal as well as a textbook case of how not to do business with the United States Government or the Pentagon,” Defense Department Secretary Pete Hegseth posted on X.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“America’s warfighters will never be held hostage by the ideological whims of Big Tech,” he added.<\/p>\n

Hegseth has now moved on\u00a0to declare Anthropic a “supply-chain risk,” and that “no contractor, supplier, or partner that does business with the United States military may conduct any commercial activity with Anthropic.”<\/p>\n

The Trump administration is providing for a six-month period for the Department of Defense and other agencies to phase out Anthropic’s products.<\/p>\n

“I am directing EVERY Federal Agency in the United States Government to \u200cIMMEDIATELY CEASE all use \u2060of \u2060Anthropic’s technology. We don\u2019t need it, we don\u2019t want it, and will not do business with them again!” Trump said in a post on Truth Social.<\/p>\n

The president also threatened to\u00a0use “the Full Power of the Presidency to make them comply, with major civil and criminal consequences to \u200cfollow” if Anthropic did not help in the phaseout period.<\/p>\n
