Her music is a fixture on any self-respecting depression playlist, and her latest project is no exception. Here, she steps into the role of a reclusive woman inside an unkempt home, where, cast as a deviant by the world outside, she finds freedom within.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Threaded with alt-rock and country-infused acoustics, the album returns to familiar Mitski themes of loss, transformation and the discomfort of being perceived by others: in the upbeat \u201cRules\u201d, she\u2019ll \u201c<em>get a new haircut\u2026be somebody else<\/em>\u201d, and \u201c<em>be dressed like your best idea<\/em>\u201d; on opener \u201cIn a Lake\u201d, she sings of moving to the city from a small town, not driven by ambition but instead seeking complete anonymity, and in \u201cDead Woman\u201d, she hypothesises the aftermath of protagonists\u2019 death in a melodic swelling track with lyrics like \u201c<em>stab me 27 times<\/em>\u201d \u2013 typical Mitski.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>While ranking her portfolio by emotional devastation may seem impossible, we tried anyway, pulling a track from (almost) each of her existing seven projects while allowing this eighth one to sit with us a little longer. Here are seven<\/span> of the most devastating Mitski tracks ranked &#8211; stay sad, everyone.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"media-tiktok\" data-id=\"7481832100698606853\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<h1><span>7. \u201cI WILL\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/h1>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"src-youtube video-container embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"media-youtube\" data-id=\"A2LEaF1jCeA\"><span class=\"preserve-aspect-ratio\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" allowfullscreen frameborder height=\"422\" scrolling=\"no\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/A2LEaF1jCeA\" webkitallowfullscreen width=\"750\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><span>I saw Mitski for the first time in 2022 at the Roundhouse with my partner. I had purchased the tickets for their birthday, but I wasn\u2019t personally the biggest Mitski fan at the time. I found that I couldn\u2019t really <\/span><em><span>get<\/span><\/em><span> into her music, but I went in with an open heart and an unravelling mind (I was PMSing, which led me to fight with my partner and cry in the queue). <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>When Mitski arrived on stage, she was bathed in purple lighting as she danced \u2013 song after song, I tried my best to hold back tears, until she played \u201c<\/span>I Will\u201d.<span>\u00a0I hate to be all main character about it, but in my fragile state it felt like she was singing directly to me:<\/span><em><span> \u201cHold my hand \/ There\u2019s no need to be brave.\u201d <\/span><\/em><span>As she comes to the end of the song she repeats resolutely: \u201c<em>I\u2019ll be brave \/ I\u2019ll be brave \/ I\u2019ll be brave<\/em>\u201d \u2013 I repeated the phrase to myself as I cried all the way home. <em>(HJ)<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<h1><span>6. \u201cBAG OF BONES\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/h1>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"src-youtube video-container embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"media-youtube\" data-id=\"uf0rzDVijC0\"><span class=\"preserve-aspect-ratio\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" allowfullscreen frameborder height=\"422\" scrolling=\"no\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/uf0rzDVijC0\" webkitallowfullscreen width=\"750\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><span>I haven\u2019t been sad \u2013 at least not Mitski-level sad \u2013 for a while. But revisiting her debut album <\/span><em><span>Lush<\/span><\/em><span> while searching for her most devastating track feels like pressing on a bruise just to check if it still hurts. With that, \u201cBag of Bones\u201d takes sixth place.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Often interpreted as being about a hollow relationship rooted primarily in physical gratification, the track is defeated, complete with cutting lyrics like \u201c<em>I know my room is a mess, over and over again I tell myself I&#8217;ll clean tomorrow\/ Just move the stuff up off the bed, And do what you came here to do\u201d<\/em>. I\u2019m certain this track has a kill count. <em>(T)<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<h1><span>5. \u201c<strong>TWO SLOW DANCERS<\/strong>\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/h1>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"src-youtube video-container embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"media-youtube\" data-id=\"KUfkfJfsKrc\"><span class=\"preserve-aspect-ratio\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" allowfullscreen frameborder height=\"422\" scrolling=\"no\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/KUfkfJfsKrc\" webkitallowfullscreen width=\"750\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><span>Writers, artists and philosophers have been grappling with the passage of time from the earliest days of human civilisation. But you might have noticed that Plato, Saint Augustine, Marcel Proust and Virginia Woolf have all been a lot less cocky since Mitski dropped \u201cTwo Slow Dancers\u201d \u2013 perhaps the definitive artistic statement on how time takes a sledgehammer to us all.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Evocative from the first line (\u201c<em>does it smell like a school gymnasium in here?<\/em>\u201d), the song starts out quiet and builds to a majestic crescendo, as strings thrum and Mitski repeats the line: \u201c<em>to think that we could stay the same\u2026to think that we could stay the same\u2026<\/em>\u201d What fools we were!! I think it\u2019s one of the saddest songs about heartbreak every written (after my last relationship ended, I had to ban myself from listening to it \u2013 it\u2019s simply too powerful), but more than just a breakup song, it\u2019s also about nostalgia, getting older and the impossibility of recapturing the past, with the line \u201c<em>the ground has been slowly pulling us back down<\/em>\u201d introducing a note of impeding mortality. Beautiful and elegiac, \u201cTwo Slow Dancers\u201d captures the truth that every moment of happiness contains within it the spectre of its own vanishing. You can\u2019t go back. <em>(JG)<\/em><\/p>\n<h1><span>4. \u201c<strong>I GUESS<\/strong>\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/h1>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"src-youtube video-container embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"media-youtube\" data-id=\"So0NYg0I0CI\"><span class=\"preserve-aspect-ratio\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" allowfullscreen frameborder height=\"422\" scrolling=\"no\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/So0NYg0I0CI\" webkitallowfullscreen width=\"750\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><span>The last few songs on most Mitski albums tend to be my favourite, and the last few songs on <\/span><em><span>Laurel Hell<\/span><\/em><span> are no exception. The meaning of \u201cI Guess\u201d has shifted and continues to shift for me as I get older. I listen to it and think about my friends who have recently left London: <\/span><em><span>\u201cWithout you, I don\u2019t yet know quite how to live\u201d<\/span><\/em><span>. I listen to it and think of my mum: <\/span><em><span>\u201cIt\u2019s been you and me since before I was me.\u201d<\/span><\/em><span> Or my friend who passed: <\/span><em><span>\u201cIf I could keep anything of you \/ I would keep just this quiet after you\u201d.<\/span><\/em><span> Every time I hear the song, and the piano starts to play, it shapeshifts into something completely new \u2013 Mitski\u2019s music always knows how to affect me deeply in my core. <em>(HJ)<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<h1><span>3. \u201c<strong>I BET ON LOSING DOGS<\/strong>\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/h1>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"src-youtube video-container embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"media-youtube\" data-id=\"XfMBdq5iFnw\"><span class=\"preserve-aspect-ratio\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" allowfullscreen frameborder height=\"422\" scrolling=\"no\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/XfMBdq5iFnw\" webkitallowfullscreen width=\"750\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><span>If \u201cTwo Slow Dancers\u201d is about longing for something beautiful which is lost forever, \u201cI Bet On Losing Dogs\u201d is hopeless in a different sort of way: it\u2019s about the mistakes you know you\u2019re making, and how self-awareness isn\u2019t always enough to save you. The song\u2019s narrator isn\u2019t deluding herself \u2013 she\u2019s well aware that the relationship she\u2019s throwing herself into is doomed (\u201c<em>I know they\u2019re losing and I\u2019ll pay for my place by the ring<\/em>\u201d), but that\u2019s kind of the point. The lyrics suggest that, as is often the case, her drive towards self-destruction is more important than the object of her desire: she just wants to feel something. Nodding to the French term for orgasm as \u2018la petite mort\u2019 (the little death), sex is portrayed in the end as a form of annihilation, a brief respite from the terrible obligation of living.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>There\u2019s something incongruously gentle about the music: the synth line adds a note of unease, but it\u2019s mostly mid-tempo indie rock with an insistent bass line and sighing backing vocals, with Mitski\u2019s voice sounding not desperate but resigned, like someone who has accepted their fate. \u201cI Bet On Losing Dogs\u201d is a bleak, haunting depiction of love as a form of self-harm, and the patterns of behaviour which people find themselves trapped by, even or especially when they embrace them. <em>(JG)<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<h1><span>2. \u201cCLASS OF 2013\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/h1>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"src-youtube video-container embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"media-youtube\" data-id=\"4y0O7gAQEFU\"><span class=\"preserve-aspect-ratio\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" allowfullscreen frameborder height=\"422\" scrolling=\"no\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/4y0O7gAQEFU\" webkitallowfullscreen width=\"750\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><span>For anyone who knows the throes of post-graduation terror, this one is for you. \u201cClass of 2013\u201d is a devastating reckoning with the fear that follows the transition into the adult world. On the track, Mitski pleads for maternal comfort to soothe the anxieties that follow. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Lyrics like \u201c<em>And I&#8217;ll leave what I&#8217;m chasing\/ For the other girls to pursue<\/em>\u201d also speak to a surrendering to the pressures that apply in life to \u201cmake it\u201d. If you\u2019re on the cusp of graduation, then it\u2019s OK to skip this one: sometimes real Mitski fans don\u2019t have it in them to listen to Mitski. <em>(T)<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<h1><span>1. \u201c<\/span><span>LAST WORDS OF A SHOOTING STAR\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/h1>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"src-youtube video-container embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"media-youtube\" data-id=\"LI6-gmxPluM\"><span class=\"preserve-aspect-ratio\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" allowfullscreen frameborder height=\"422\" scrolling=\"no\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/LI6-gmxPluM\" webkitallowfullscreen width=\"750\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><span>Here we have it, the most devastating Mitski track of all time. There is a mastery to bringing truly dark moments to life without laying them out in overly direct, corny and clich\u00e9 language. Mitski not only has that mastery, but she has continuously pushed it to uncomfortably reflective places. \u201cLast Words of a Shooting Star\u201d, from <\/span><em><span>Bury Me At Makeout Creek<\/span><\/em><span>, is an example of the singer at her best. In the lyrics, \u201c<em>they\u2019ll think of me kindly when they come for my things \/ they\u2019ll never know how I stirred up the dark in that room with no thoughts like a blood-sniffing shar<\/em><\/span><em>k<\/em><span>\u201d, she uses the image of a tidy room to question how we attempt to skew external perceptions of our struggling \u2013 and how, even in death, we care enough to want to appear put together.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>I\u2019ve read many debates online about whether the song is referencing a literal plane crash or if the image of turbulence is used to describe suicide. Either way, across less than three minutes, she manages to perfectly channel a fascination I\u2019ve always had around what happens when someone passes away unexpectedly. Where do their intricately built inner worlds disappear to? Is it better to leave it all behind for someone to find, or is grief easier with a more digestible and palpable narrative around how someone really experienced the world?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>I could unpack every single lyric from this song, but I don\u2019t think my (already surpassed) word count limit would suffice. Instead, I\u2019ll leave you with the haunting magic of Mitski, in these final lines: <em><span>\u201c<\/span>I always wanted to die clean and pretty, but I\u2019d be too busy on working days. Her music is a fixture on any self-respecting depression playlist, and her latest project is no exception. Here, she steps into the role of a reclusive woman inside an unkempt home, where, cast as a deviant by the world outside, she finds freedom within.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Threaded with alt-rock and country-infused acoustics, the album returns to familiar Mitski themes of loss, transformation and the discomfort of being perceived by others: in the upbeat \u201cRules\u201d, she\u2019ll \u201c<em>get a new haircut\u2026be somebody else<\/em>\u201d, and \u201c<em>be dressed like your best idea<\/em>\u201d; on opener \u201cIn a Lake\u201d, she sings of moving to the city from a small town, not driven by ambition but instead seeking complete anonymity, and in \u201cDead Woman\u201d, she hypothesises the aftermath of protagonists\u2019 death in a melodic swelling track with lyrics like \u201c<em>stab me 27 times<\/em>\u201d \u2013 typical Mitski.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>While ranking her portfolio by emotional devastation may seem impossible, we tried anyway, pulling a track from (almost) each of her existing seven projects while allowing this eighth one to sit with us a little longer. I had purchased the tickets for their birthday, but I wasn\u2019t personally the biggest Mitski fan at the time. I found that I couldn\u2019t really <\/span><em><span>get<\/span><\/em><span> into her music, but I went in with an open heart and an unravelling mind (I was PMSing, which led me to fight with my partner and cry in the queue). <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>When Mitski arrived on stage, she was bathed in purple lighting as she danced \u2013 song after song, I tried my best to hold back tears, until she played \u201c<\/span>I Will\u201d.<span>\u00a0I hate to be all main character about it, but in my fragile state it felt like she was singing directly to me:<\/span><em><span> \u201cHold my hand \/ There\u2019s no need to be brave.\u201d <\/span><\/em><span>As she comes to the end of the song she repeats resolutely: \u201c<em>I\u2019ll be brave \/ I\u2019ll be brave \/ I\u2019ll be brave<\/em>\u201d \u2013 I repeated the phrase to myself as I cried all the way home. <em>(HJ)<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<h1><span>6. \u201cBAG OF BONES\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/h1>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"src-youtube video-container embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"media-youtube\" data-id=\"uf0rzDVijC0\"><span class=\"preserve-aspect-ratio\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" allowfullscreen frameborder height=\"422\" scrolling=\"no\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/uf0rzDVijC0\" webkitallowfullscreen width=\"750\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><span>I haven\u2019t been sad \u2013 at least not Mitski-level sad \u2013 for a while. But revisiting her debut album <\/span><em><span>Lush<\/span><\/em><span> while searching for her most devastating track feels like pressing on a bruise just to check if it still hurts. With that, \u201cBag of Bones\u201d takes sixth place.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Often interpreted as being about a hollow relationship rooted primarily in physical gratification, the track is defeated, complete with cutting lyrics like \u201c<em>I know my room is a mess, over and over again I tell myself I&#8217;ll clean tomorrow\/ Just move the stuff up off the bed, And do what you came here to do\u201d<\/em>. But you might have noticed that Plato, Saint Augustine, Marcel Proust and Virginia Woolf have all been a lot less cocky since Mitski dropped \u201cTwo Slow Dancers\u201d \u2013 perhaps the definitive artistic statement on how time takes a sledgehammer to us all.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Evocative from the first line (\u201c<em>does it smell like a school gymnasium in here?<\/em>\u201d), the song starts out quiet and builds to a majestic crescendo, as strings thrum and Mitski repeats the line: \u201c<em>to think that we could stay the same\u2026to think that we could stay the same\u2026<\/em>\u201d What fools we were!! I think it\u2019s one of the saddest songs about heartbreak every written (after my last relationship ended, I had to ban myself from listening to it \u2013 it\u2019s simply too powerful), but more than just a breakup song, it\u2019s also about nostalgia, getting older and the impossibility of recapturing the past, with the line \u201c<em>the ground has been slowly pulling us back down<\/em>\u201d introducing a note of impeding mortality. Beautiful and elegiac, \u201cTwo Slow Dancers\u201d captures the truth that every moment of happiness contains within it the spectre of its own vanishing. The meaning of \u201cI Guess\u201d has shifted and continues to shift for me as I get older. I listen to it and think about my friends who have recently left London: <\/span><em><span>\u201cWithout you, I don\u2019t yet know quite how to live\u201d<\/span><\/em><span>. I listen to it and think of my mum: <\/span><em><span>\u201cIt\u2019s been you and me since before I was me.\u201d<\/span><\/em><span> Or my friend who passed: <\/span><em><span>\u201cIf I could keep anything of you \/ I would keep just this quiet after you\u201d.<\/span><\/em><span> Every time I hear the song, and the piano starts to play, it shapeshifts into something completely new \u2013 Mitski\u2019s music always knows how to affect me deeply in my core. <em>(HJ)<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<h1><span>3. \u201c<strong>I BET ON LOSING DOGS<\/strong>\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/h1>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"src-youtube video-container embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"media-youtube\" data-id=\"XfMBdq5iFnw\"><span class=\"preserve-aspect-ratio\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" allowfullscreen frameborder height=\"422\" scrolling=\"no\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/XfMBdq5iFnw\" webkitallowfullscreen width=\"750\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><span>If \u201cTwo Slow Dancers\u201d is about longing for something beautiful which is lost forever, \u201cI Bet On Losing Dogs\u201d is hopeless in a different sort of way: it\u2019s about the mistakes you know you\u2019re making, and how self-awareness isn\u2019t always enough to save you. The song\u2019s narrator isn\u2019t deluding herself \u2013 she\u2019s well aware that the relationship she\u2019s throwing herself into is doomed (\u201c<em>I know they\u2019re losing and I\u2019ll pay for my place by the ring<\/em>\u201d), but that\u2019s kind of the point. The lyrics suggest that, as is often the case, her drive towards self-destruction is more important than the object of her desire: she just wants to feel something. Nodding to the French term for orgasm as \u2018la petite mort\u2019 (the little death), sex is portrayed in the end as a form of annihilation, a brief respite from the terrible obligation of living.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>There\u2019s something incongruously gentle about the music: the synth line adds a note of unease, but it\u2019s mostly mid-tempo indie rock with an insistent bass line and sighing backing vocals, with Mitski\u2019s voice sounding not desperate but resigned, like someone who has accepted their fate. \u201cI Bet On Losing Dogs\u201d is a bleak, haunting depiction of love as a form of self-harm, and the patterns of behaviour which people find themselves trapped by, even or especially when they embrace them. <em>(JG)<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<h1><span>2. \u201cCLASS OF 2013\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/h1>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"src-youtube video-container embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"media-youtube\" data-id=\"4y0O7gAQEFU\"><span class=\"preserve-aspect-ratio\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" allowfullscreen frameborder height=\"422\" scrolling=\"no\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/4y0O7gAQEFU\" webkitallowfullscreen width=\"750\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><span>For anyone who knows the throes of post-graduation terror, this one is for you. \u201cClass of 2013\u201d is a devastating reckoning with the fear that follows the transition into the adult world. On the track, Mitski pleads for maternal comfort to soothe the anxieties that follow. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Lyrics like \u201c<em>And I&#8217;ll leave what I&#8217;m chasing\/ For the other girls to pursue<\/em>\u201d also speak to a surrendering to the pressures that apply in life to \u201cmake it\u201d. If you\u2019re on the cusp of graduation, then it\u2019s OK to skip this one: sometimes real Mitski fans don\u2019t have it in them to listen to Mitski. <em>(T)<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<h1><span>1. \u201c<\/span><span>LAST WORDS OF A SHOOTING STAR\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/h1>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"src-youtube video-container embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"media-youtube\" data-id=\"LI6-gmxPluM\"><span class=\"preserve-aspect-ratio\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" allowfullscreen frameborder height=\"422\" scrolling=\"no\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/LI6-gmxPluM\" webkitallowfullscreen width=\"750\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><span>Here we have it, the most devastating Mitski track of all time. There is a mastery to bringing truly dark moments to life without laying them out in overly direct, corny and clich\u00e9 language. Mitski not only has that mastery, but she has continuously pushed it to uncomfortably reflective places. \u201cLast Words of a Shooting Star\u201d, from <\/span><em><span>Bury Me At Makeout Creek<\/span><\/em><span>, is an example of the singer at her best. In the lyrics, \u201c<em>they\u2019ll think of me kindly when they come for my things \/ they\u2019ll never know how I stirred up the dark in that room with no thoughts like a blood-sniffing shar<\/em><\/span><em>k<\/em><span>\u201d, she uses the image of a tidy room to question how we attempt to skew external perceptions of our struggling \u2013 and how, even in death, we care enough to want to appear put together.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>I\u2019ve read many debates online about whether the song is referencing a literal plane crash or if the image of turbulence is used to describe suicide. Either way, across less than three minutes, she manages to perfectly channel a fascination I\u2019ve always had around what happens when someone passes away unexpectedly. Where do their intricately built inner worlds disappear to?
