Like a cross between <em>Mad Max: Fury Road <\/em>and <em>Climax<\/em>, \u00d3liver Laxe\u2019s post-apocalyptic EDM thriller starts off with gigantic speakers laid out in a Moroccan desert like Jenga pieces. Plugged in, the sound system generates pounding techno for hundreds of blissed-out ravers to leap around as the sun sets upon the surrounding mountains. If the theatre\u2019s volume levels are correct, the vibrations will be so powerful that it\u2019s like 4DX. \u201cSome critics watch a film with their brain,\u201d Laxe tells me. \u201cBut this film has to be watched with the body.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Laxe, a 43-year-old Galician director, is himself a raver, even if his passion for thumping electronica wasn\u2019t so apparent in his earlier indies like <em>Mimosas<\/em> and <em>Fire Will Come<\/em>. \u201cI did this film for young audiences,\u201d he says. \u201cWhen I go to a rave, I dance with that generation, even if I\u2019m 10 or 20 years older.\u201d He mentions that <em>Sir\u0101t <\/em>is selling so many tickets in France, it\u2019s going to outgross <em>The Substance<\/em>. \u201cIt\u2019s thanks to young audiences going to the cinema because they feel represented. That doesn\u2019t happen with arthouse cinema.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Arabic word \u201csir\u0101t\u201d translates to \u201cthe path\u201d in English, and <em>Sir\u0101t<\/em> soon reveals itself as a road movie. Amongst the revellers, two figures stick out in middle-aged Luis (Sergi L\u00f3pez from <em>Pan\u2019s Labyrinth<\/em>) and his son, Esteban (Bruno N\u00fa\u00f1ez Arjona), both of whom are unfamiliar with dance culture and are played by the only professional actors in the ensemble. (The majority were street-cast and found at real raves.)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"src-youtube video-container embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"media-youtube\" data-id=\"D_KIPSkUm_8\"><span class=\"preserve-aspect-ratio\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" allowfullscreen frameborder height=\"422\" scrolling=\"no\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/D_KIPSkUm_8\" webkitallowfullscreen width=\"750\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p>Luis believes his missing daughter is at a desert rave, and so he and Esteban traverse the dusty landscape for a young woman who may not want to be found. When an army of tank-driving soldiers break up the revelry, the pair ask to tag along with another group on their quest for another outdoor party. The journey proves to be long and arduous: there\u2019s a shortage of food, fuel, and workable roads; a news report on the radio reveals that World War 3 has broken out.<\/p>\n<p>Again, Laxe believes the film\u2019s dystopian outlook is sending teenagers to the cinema. \u201cIt\u2019s connecting to the fears and dreams of a generation that wants to change their society,\u201d he says. \u201cI should probably stop using the word \u2018young\u2019. It makes me sound paternalistic. But like any raver, I know that this society is not sustainable. We just wait for the shift.\u201d Is it better to refer to himself as an outsider, then, perhaps one with a young spirit? \u201cIn a way, the archetypal raver is Peter Pan. But I don\u2019t like that some of them are escapist, and don\u2019t want to grow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m speaking to Laxe in The Londoner Hotel, a few hours before <em>Sir\u0101t<\/em> screens at BFI IMAX during the London Film Festival. Ever since Cannes, where the film won the Jury Prize (unofficially third place), it\u2019s developed a reputation as an existential thriller to watch big, loud, and knowing as little beforehand as possible. The experience is akin to something like <em>The Sixth Sense<\/em>: you want to be amongst a gasping crowd when certain plot points unfold.<\/p>\n<p>When I question Laxe if he and his co-writer Santiago Fillol were nervous about \u201cthe scene\u201d, he knows exactly what I\u2019m referring to. \u201cIt was an idea from Santiago. I had trouble accepting it. I thought it was too extreme. But that\u2019s why it\u2019s good \u2013 because it\u2019s taboo. But we\u2019re surrounded by death. Why does it have to be taboo if it\u2019s something that happens in reality?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cI like free party culture. A dance floor in a club has more ego\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p>Laxe has premiered films at Cannes since 2010 with <em>You All Are Captains<\/em>, but none with the international attention of <em>Sir\u0101t<\/em>. It was around a decade ago that he and Fillol started working on the screenplay. On the page, the director admits, the film\u2019s potential is hard to grasp: French production companies turned down a project that would make the audience \u201csuffer\u201d. (Laxe grins and lets me know they\u2019ve since expressed their regret to him.) Instead, most of the financing came from Spain. One of the producers is Pedro Almod\u00f3var, whom Laxe refers to as \u201ca good colleague\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Did Laxe and Fillol listen to techno when writing? \u201cNo. It\u2019s more me who included music in the script. I developed the images of the film dancing on a dance floor. The images of this tribe crossing the desert, I developed them when dancing. I went to Sufi trance ceremonies.\u201d Laxe lists the places he visited: Morocco, France, Portugal, Italy, and so on. He also namedrops psychotherapists like Stanislav Grof, Claudio Naranjo, and Fritz Perls. \u201cGrof wrote a book called <em>LSD Psychotherapy<\/em>. In this therapy, you experience death and your rebirth. <em>Sir\u0101t<\/em> is like LSD psychotherapy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The director wishes to make a distinction between raving in a desert and partying at a nightclub or music festival. \u201cI like free party culture. A dance floor in a club has more ego. I don\u2019t like the presence of a DJ. I prefer raves where the DJ is hidden, and you have the abstract transcendence of only the sound system in front of you, and you don\u2019t see people with phones taking selfies. At a free party, it\u2019s not about flirting and seducing someone. And it\u2019s not like Burning Man where people dress up for a weekend. For the people in <em>Sir\u0101t<\/em>, it\u2019s a way of life.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<figure class=\"inline-img expandable dev-view-hide\" data-img=\"6a0d380e-0ac3-431b-b27e-b3fe00b1b1d8\" data-src=\"https:\/\/images-prod.dazeddigital.com\/2000\/azure\/dazed-prod\/1430\/9\/1439298.jpg\" data-img-aspect-ratio-type=\"landscape\" data-img-aspect-ratio=\"1.5\"><span class=\"has-css-custom-props image-container\" data-aspect-ratio-type=\"landscape\"><span class=\"preserve-aspect-ratio\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Sirat\" class=\"img\" height=\"2001\" src=\"https:\/\/images-prod.dazeddigital.com\/786\/azure\/dazed-prod\/1430\/9\/1439298.jpg\" width=\"3000\"><\/span><\/span><figcaption class=\"img-caption\"><span class=\"credit\">Sirat<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p>What\u2019s less apparent from the marketing is how much of <em>Sir\u0101t<\/em> doesn\u2019t involve music. While Kangding Ray\u2019s score is practically a supporting character, half the film is really about despairing, dehydrated people driving away from civilisation. It\u2019s fitting, then, that Laxe grew up on slow-burn arthouse cinema. \u201cWhen I was 15, I was completely lost,\u201d he says. \u201cI didn\u2019t have any spiritual reference. But I found a light in cinema. Watching Tarkovsky and Bresson was my first experience of knowing I have a soul inside. I made <em>Sir\u0101t<\/em> to connect with people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ultimately, <em>Sir\u0101t<\/em> is a Venn diagram of Laxe\u2019s interests: Tarkovsky, rave culture, and Islam. While religions are typically associated with classical music, Laxe posits that an electromagnetic vibration can be more transcendent than an instrument made of wood or iron. \u201cYou don\u2019t know the source of electronic music. It\u2019s easier to feel the mystery. It could be how the angels sing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He continues, \u201cMaking art is about looking inside yourself. I like the Quran, and I like techno. I don\u2019t know if there\u2019s a dialogue between Islam and rave culture, but in me, there is. Spirituality is about learning to die with dignity. The question is not \u2018why do we die?\u2019 but \u2018how do we die?\u2019 It\u2019s healthy that spectators die watching the film. The cinema can be a place for catharsis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And will <em>Sir\u0101t<\/em> encourage more people to go raving? \u201cA dance floor gives you a lot of strength, but also a lot of vulnerability. A rave can also have a toxic dimension. Everything, like this hotel where we\u2019re having this interview, has toxicity. I don\u2019t know if people are more likely to go to a rave or a Sufi temple. Like a cross between <em>Mad Max: Fury Road <\/em>and <em>Climax<\/em>, \u00d3liver Laxe\u2019s post-apocalyptic EDM thriller starts off with gigantic speakers laid out in a Moroccan desert like Jenga pieces. Plugged in, the sound system generates pounding techno for hundreds of blissed-out ravers to leap around as the sun sets upon the surrounding mountains. If the theatre\u2019s volume levels are correct, the vibrations will be so powerful that it\u2019s like 4DX. \u201cSome critics watch a film with their brain,\u201d Laxe tells me. \u201cBut this film has to be watched with the body.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Laxe, a 43-year-old Galician director, is himself a raver, even if his passion for thumping electronica wasn\u2019t so apparent in his earlier indies like <em>Mimosas<\/em> and <em>Fire Will Come<\/em>. \u201cI did this film for young audiences,\u201d he says. \u201cWhen I go to a rave, I dance with that generation, even if I\u2019m 10 or 20 years older.\u201d He mentions that <em>Sir\u0101t <\/em>is selling so many tickets in France, it\u2019s going to outgross <em>The Substance<\/em>. \u201cIt\u2019s thanks to young audiences going to the cinema because they feel represented. That doesn\u2019t happen with arthouse cinema.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Arabic word \u201csir\u0101t\u201d translates to \u201cthe path\u201d in English, and <em>Sir\u0101t<\/em> soon reveals itself as a road movie. Amongst the revellers, two figures stick out in middle-aged Luis (Sergi L\u00f3pez from <em>Pan\u2019s Labyrinth<\/em>) and his son, Esteban (Bruno N\u00fa\u00f1ez Arjona), both of whom are unfamiliar with dance culture and are played by the only professional actors in the ensemble. (The majority were street-cast and found at real raves.)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"src-youtube video-container embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"media-youtube\" data-id=\"D_KIPSkUm_8\"><span class=\"preserve-aspect-ratio\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" allowfullscreen frameborder height=\"422\" scrolling=\"no\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/D_KIPSkUm_8\" webkitallowfullscreen width=\"750\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p>Luis believes his missing daughter is at a desert rave, and so he and Esteban traverse the dusty landscape for a young woman who may not want to be found. When an army of tank-driving soldiers break up the revelry, the pair ask to tag along with another group on their quest for another outdoor party. The journey proves to be long and arduous: there\u2019s a shortage of food, fuel, and workable roads; a news report on the radio reveals that World War 3 has broken out.<\/p>\n<p>Again, Laxe believes the film\u2019s dystopian outlook is sending teenagers to the cinema. \u201cIt\u2019s connecting to the fears and dreams of a generation that wants to change their society,\u201d he says. \u201cI should probably stop using the word \u2018young\u2019. It makes me sound paternalistic. But like any raver, I know that this society is not sustainable. We just wait for the shift.\u201d Is it better to refer to himself as an outsider, then, perhaps one with a young spirit? \u201cIn a way, the archetypal raver is Peter Pan. But I don\u2019t like that some of them are escapist, and don\u2019t want to grow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m speaking to Laxe in The Londoner Hotel, a few hours before <em>Sir\u0101t<\/em> screens at BFI IMAX during the London Film Festival. Ever since Cannes, where the film won the Jury Prize (unofficially third place), it\u2019s developed a reputation as an existential thriller to watch big, loud, and knowing as little beforehand as possible. The experience is akin to something like <em>The Sixth Sense<\/em>: you want to be amongst a gasping crowd when certain plot points unfold.<\/p>\n<p>When I question Laxe if he and his co-writer Santiago Fillol were nervous about \u201cthe scene\u201d, he knows exactly what I\u2019m referring to. \u201cIt was an idea from Santiago. I had trouble accepting it. I thought it was too extreme. But that\u2019s why it\u2019s good \u2013 because it\u2019s taboo. But we\u2019re surrounded by death. Why does it have to be taboo if it\u2019s something that happens in reality?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cI like free party culture. A dance floor in a club has more ego\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p>Laxe has premiered films at Cannes since 2010 with <em>You All Are Captains<\/em>, but none with the international attention of <em>Sir\u0101t<\/em>. It was around a decade ago that he and Fillol started working on the screenplay. On the page, the director admits, the film\u2019s potential is hard to grasp: French production companies turned down a project that would make the audience \u201csuffer\u201d. (Laxe grins and lets me know they\u2019ve since expressed their regret to him.) Instead, most of the financing came from Spain. One of the producers is Pedro Almod\u00f3var, whom Laxe refers to as \u201ca good colleague\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Did Laxe and Fillol listen to techno when writing? \u201cNo. It\u2019s more me who included music in the script. I developed the images of the film dancing on a dance floor. The images of this tribe crossing the desert, I developed them when dancing. I went to Sufi trance ceremonies.\u201d Laxe lists the places he visited: Morocco, France, Portugal, Italy, and so on. He also namedrops psychotherapists like Stanislav Grof, Claudio Naranjo, and Fritz Perls. \u201cGrof wrote a book called <em>LSD Psychotherapy<\/em>. In this therapy, you experience death and your rebirth. <em>Sir\u0101t<\/em> is like LSD psychotherapy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The director wishes to make a distinction between raving in a desert and partying at a nightclub or music festival. \u201cI like free party culture. A dance floor in a club has more ego. I don\u2019t like the presence of a DJ. I prefer raves where the DJ is hidden, and you have the abstract transcendence of only the sound system in front of you, and you don\u2019t see people with phones taking selfies. At a free party, it\u2019s not about flirting and seducing someone. And it\u2019s not like Burning Man where people dress up for a weekend. For the people in <em>Sir\u0101t<\/em>, it\u2019s a way of life.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<figure class=\"inline-img expandable dev-view-hide\" data-img=\"6a0d380e-0ac3-431b-b27e-b3fe00b1b1d8\" data-src=\"https:\/\/images-prod.dazeddigital.com\/2000\/azure\/dazed-prod\/1430\/9\/1439298.jpg\" data-img-aspect-ratio-type=\"landscape\" data-img-aspect-ratio=\"1.5\"><span class=\"has-css-custom-props image-container\" data-aspect-ratio-type=\"landscape\"><span class=\"preserve-aspect-ratio\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Sirat\" class=\"img\" height=\"2001\" src=\"https:\/\/images-prod.dazeddigital.com\/786\/azure\/dazed-prod\/1430\/9\/1439298.jpg\" width=\"3000\"><\/span><\/span><figcaption class=\"img-caption\"><span class=\"credit\">Sirat<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p>What\u2019s less apparent from the marketing is how much of <em>Sir\u0101t<\/em> doesn\u2019t involve music. While Kangding Ray\u2019s score is practically a supporting character, half the film is really about despairing, dehydrated people driving away from civilisation. It\u2019s fitting, then, that Laxe grew up on slow-burn arthouse cinema. \u201cWhen I was 15, I was completely lost,\u201d he says. \u201cI didn\u2019t have any spiritual reference. But I found a light in cinema. Watching Tarkovsky and Bresson was my first experience of knowing I have a soul inside. I made <em>Sir\u0101t<\/em> to connect with people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ultimately, <em>Sir\u0101t<\/em> is a Venn diagram of Laxe\u2019s interests: Tarkovsky, rave culture, and Islam. While religions are typically associated with classical music, Laxe posits that an electromagnetic vibration can be more transcendent than an instrument made of wood or iron. \u201cYou don\u2019t know the source of electronic music. It\u2019s easier to feel the mystery. It could be how the angels sing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He continues, \u201cMaking art is about looking inside yourself. I like the Quran, and I like techno. I don\u2019t know if there\u2019s a dialogue between Islam and rave culture, but in me, there is. Spirituality is about learning to die with dignity. The question is not \u2018why do we die?\u2019 but \u2018how do we die?\u2019 It\u2019s healthy that spectators die watching the film. The cinema can be a place for catharsis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And will <em>Sir\u0101t<\/em> encourage more people to go raving? \u201cA dance floor gives you a lot of strength, but also a lot of vulnerability. A rave can also have a toxic dimension. Everything, like this hotel where we\u2019re having this interview, has toxicity. I don\u2019t know if people are more likely to go to a rave or a Sufi temple.
