These were the answers gathered from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/AskReddit\/comments\/pqob16\/what_does_the_internet_smell_like\/\">a Reddit thread<\/a> asking: what does the internet smell like? It may seem nonsensical to assign a scent to something metaphysical, but if the internet can be seen visually and experienced corporeally \u2013 the addictive rush of dopamine from likes, the anxiety from work emails or the anger provoked by ragebait \u2013 is it really so far-fetched to imagine that it has a smell?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>While it\u2019s easy to think of the internet as a weightless network of information, really it is housed in windowless buildings that hum through the night, in thick fibre-optic cables dragged across ocean floors, and servers running hot enough to require constant cooling. Looked at that way, it\u2019s easy to understand why the answers in the Reddit thread leaned towards more material, earthly scents. Suggestions included the warm, dusty scent of early dial-up modems, the sticky screens of iPhones, or the baked-warmth of laptops in libraries.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>These ideas aren\u2019t just limited to Reddit threads. In recent years, several leading perfumers have tried to bottle the scent of the internet. One example is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/blackbird.black\/products\/y06-s-eau-de-parfum\"><span>Y06-S Eau de Parfum<\/span><\/a><span> by Blackbird, which smells like overheating electronics, paired with the interesting choice of banana. At the more conceptual end is\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/shop.thehmm.nl\/product\/hmmosphere\/\">The Hmm\u2019s Hmmosphere<\/a><span>: inspired by a field trip to an Amsterdam data centre, the fragrance is designed to smell like cooled servers and the surrounding environment, with notes of \u201cancient computer dust, soft yellowing plastics, moss, wet dirt, and strong cellar vibes.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<figure class=\"inline-img expandable dev-view-hide\" data-img=\"ba3193e6-17b3-42c3-a078-b3fc00f98d10\" data-src=\"https:\/\/images-prod.dazeddigital.com\/1000\/azure\/dazed-prod\/1430\/9\/1439000.jpg\" data-img-aspect-ratio-type=\"square\" data-img-aspect-ratio=\"1\"><span class=\"has-css-custom-props image-container\" data-aspect-ratio-type=\"square\"><span class=\"preserve-aspect-ratio\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"The Hmmm\" class=\"img\" height=\"1000\" src=\"https:\/\/images-prod.dazeddigital.com\/786\/azure\/dazed-prod\/1430\/9\/1439000.jpg\" width=\"1000\"><\/span><\/span><figcaption class=\"img-caption\"><span class=\"credit\">The Hmm<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><span>The latest off-kilter perfume to draw inspiration from the world of technology is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/accounts\/login\/?next=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.instagram.com%2Freel%2FDU31_wqkV53%2F&amp;is_from_rle\">Skype by Unjust<\/a>, a brand which also sells a wide range of internet-related jewellery, from a Windows 98 bracelet to a wallet in the shape of an old-timey error message. <\/span><span>The scent lists notes that are ozonic, citrusy and grassy, capturing \u201cthe nostalgia and calm optimism of the early Skype-era design.\u201d\u00a0 Following a similar composition, John Phillips\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/johnphillips.in\/products\/whatsapp-skin-friendly-long-lasting-perfume-unisex-fragrance-for-daily-use-office-travel-60-ml-1000-sprays?srsltid=AfmBOoqRodHEZmRpm_r9maGGxmCB5ohCGzUaHLG8zucEFgbHuqDDUg11\">WhatsApp Eau de Parfum<\/a>\u00a0became a fragrance meme for its somewhat random association with the messaging platform. The reference is left unexplained by the brand, although it assures us that WhatsApp Perfume \u201c[emanates] sophistication\u201d and makes the perfect choice for \u201cthe contemporary individual who craves distinction.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The internet\u2019s growing popularity in the world of fragrance is further proof that it has become part of lived bodily experience, rather than remaining a purely digital or virtual space. This is best understood through the idea of embodied perception, which suggests that we do not experience the world as abstract information, but through the physical and emotional responses of the body. Smells associated with early digital culture are often clean \u2013 it was a time when the internet was still felt fresh \u2013 and lean on the Frutiger Aero design aesthetic of the 2000s-early 2010s, which was characterised by glossy, cool and skeuomorphic visuals, green fields and bright blue skies which evoked a sunny optimism. It makes you wonder: what would a perfume inspired by the state of the internet today smell like?
