In recent years, the celebrations have seen increasing numbers of foreign visitors, with this year\u2019s event being an estimated 8.2 per cent larger than in 2025. While your friends\u2019 Instagram stories might have focused on the more high-octane parties, however, photographer and underground rave expert <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/_yushy\/?hl=en\">Yushy<\/a> was on hand to capture the in-between moments that reveal the true spirit of Rio Carnival.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cLast year, I went to all the big <\/span><em><span>blocos <\/span><\/em><span>(\u2018street parties\u2019) and parades during the midday sun and this time I did the reverse: I went around earlier and later on during the day to get those moments of \u2018between\u2019,\u201d Yushy tells Dazed, having attended Rio Carnival for his second year in a row last weekend. \u201cThere\u2019s so many people and nothing really finishes or starts on time, so a lot of people told me not to make a concrete plan and just to enjoy myself in the moment.\u201d The resulting photos reveal a tenderness less emphasised in traditional portrayals of the celebrations \u2013 a couple waltz on an empty street in darkness, a party-goer suckles on an ice cube in the sweltering heat, another is captured midway through dusting himself with glitter.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<figure class=\"inline-img expandable dev-view-hide\" data-img=\"f0783f62-c763-4277-83d3-b3fc00c05c0e\" data-src=\"https:\/\/images-prod.dazeddigital.com\/2000\/azure\/dazed-prod\/1430\/8\/1438815.jpeg\" data-img-aspect-ratio-type=\"landscape\" data-img-aspect-ratio=\"1.5\"><span class=\"has-css-custom-props image-container\" data-aspect-ratio-type=\"landscape\"><span class=\"preserve-aspect-ratio\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Rio Carnival, 2026, Yushy\" class=\"img\" height=\"1996\" src=\"https:\/\/images-prod.dazeddigital.com\/786\/azure\/dazed-prod\/1430\/8\/1438815.jpeg\" width=\"3000\"><\/span><\/span><figcaption class=\"img-caption\"><span class=\"credit\">Photography Yushy (@_yushy)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><span>But that doesn\u2019t mean that Yushy\u2019s trip was a subdued affair. \u201cThe atmosphere is pretty electric. Unlike London, everything is open past 12 and people are up and doing stuff at all hours,\u201d the photographer explains. \u201cYou can go from a parade here to a <\/span><em><span>bloco <\/span><\/em><span>there, to a parade at 7am the following morning followed by a samba show in a local bar. After that, it feels good to sit down and eat at 1am after partying for ten hours.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Still, the main highlight for Yushy was the music itself. Brazil, of course, has a rich musical history \u2013 from forr\u00f3, samba and bossa nova through to baile funk and MPB (M\u00fasica Popular Brasileira) \u2013 and all of these were on full display across carnival weekend. \u201cI would hear a funk remix of Red Hot Chili Peppers\u2019 \u2018Under the Bridge\u2019 to the most pure and soulful samba to earth-shattering walls of bass hitting your chest,\u201d recalls Yushy, whose recent photobook <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/art-photography\/article\/68157\/1\/yushi-london-rave-clubbing-photo-book-section-63\"><em><span>Section 82 <\/span><\/em><\/a><span>documents his time infiltrating illegal raves in the UK<\/span><span>. \u201cI also heard lots of UK sounds, like dub\/dubstep, breakbeat and UKG. Rio&#8217;s carnival isn&#8217;t just the largest in the world, but also one of the most important, fostering community in a country that is both deeply diverse and riven by inequality.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>In order to enjoy it to its fullest, however, Yushy has one piece of advice: \u201cIt\u2019s a marathon not a sprint. In recent years, the celebrations have seen increasing numbers of foreign visitors, with this year\u2019s event being an estimated 8.2 per cent larger than in 2025. While your friends\u2019 Instagram stories might have focused on the more high-octane parties, however, photographer and underground rave expert <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/_yushy\/?hl=en\">Yushy<\/a> was on hand to capture the in-between moments that reveal the true spirit of Rio Carnival.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cLast year, I went to all the big <\/span><em><span>blocos <\/span><\/em><span>(\u2018street parties\u2019) and parades during the midday sun and this time I did the reverse: I went around earlier and later on during the day to get those moments of \u2018between\u2019,\u201d Yushy tells Dazed, having attended Rio Carnival for his second year in a row last weekend. \u201cThere\u2019s so many people and nothing really finishes or starts on time, so a lot of people told me not to make a concrete plan and just to enjoy myself in the moment.\u201d The resulting photos reveal a tenderness less emphasised in traditional portrayals of the celebrations \u2013 a couple waltz on an empty street in darkness, a party-goer suckles on an ice cube in the sweltering heat, another is captured midway through dusting himself with glitter.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<figure class=\"inline-img expandable dev-view-hide\" data-img=\"f0783f62-c763-4277-83d3-b3fc00c05c0e\" data-src=\"https:\/\/images-prod.dazeddigital.com\/2000\/azure\/dazed-prod\/1430\/8\/1438815.jpeg\" data-img-aspect-ratio-type=\"landscape\" data-img-aspect-ratio=\"1.5\"><span class=\"has-css-custom-props image-container\" data-aspect-ratio-type=\"landscape\"><span class=\"preserve-aspect-ratio\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Rio Carnival, 2026, Yushy\" class=\"img\" height=\"1996\" src=\"https:\/\/images-prod.dazeddigital.com\/786\/azure\/dazed-prod\/1430\/8\/1438815.jpeg\" width=\"3000\"><\/span><\/span><figcaption class=\"img-caption\"><span class=\"credit\">Photography Yushy (@_yushy)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><span>But that doesn\u2019t mean that Yushy\u2019s trip was a subdued affair. \u201cThe atmosphere is pretty electric. Unlike London, everything is open past 12 and people are up and doing stuff at all hours,\u201d the photographer explains. \u201cYou can go from a parade here to a <\/span><em><span>bloco <\/span><\/em><span>there, to a parade at 7am the following morning followed by a samba show in a local bar. After that, it feels good to sit down and eat at 1am after partying for ten hours.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Still, the main highlight for Yushy was the music itself. Brazil, of course, has a rich musical history \u2013 from forr\u00f3, samba and bossa nova through to baile funk and MPB (M\u00fasica Popular Brasileira) \u2013 and all of these were on full display across carnival weekend. \u201cI would hear a funk remix of Red Hot Chili Peppers\u2019 \u2018Under the Bridge\u2019 to the most pure and soulful samba to earth-shattering walls of bass hitting your chest,\u201d recalls Yushy, whose recent photobook <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/art-photography\/article\/68157\/1\/yushi-london-rave-clubbing-photo-book-section-63\"><em><span>Section 82 <\/span><\/em><\/a><span>documents his time infiltrating illegal raves in the UK<\/span><span>. \u201cI also heard lots of UK sounds, like dub\/dubstep, breakbeat and UKG. Rio&#8217;s carnival isn&#8217;t just the largest in the world, but also one of the most important, fostering community in a country that is both deeply diverse and riven by inequality.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>In order to enjoy it to its fullest, however, Yushy has one piece of advice: \u201cIt\u2019s a marathon not a sprint.
