In a new interview with Gast\u00e3o Moreira<\/strong> of Kazagast\u00e3o<\/em>, Alex Van Halen<\/strong> opened up about the album he is developing with Steve Lukather<\/strong> of Toto<\/strong>, built around previously unreleased material created with his late brother Eddie Van Halen<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Alex<\/strong> revealed that the music dates back to sessions intended for the next Van Halen<\/strong> album before Eddie<\/strong>‘s passing. “Ed<\/strong> and I had a lot of stuff that we made\u2026 that we never let go,” Alex<\/strong> explained. “We’re not gonna release it in its embryonic form\u2026 It has to be of the quality and the level of where we left it.”<\/p>\n According to Alex<\/strong>, the drums, guitar, and bass were already recorded. Much of the bass was handled by Wolfgang Van Halen<\/strong>, Eddie<\/strong>‘s son and the band’s former bassist. What’s missing now is a vocalist \u2014 along with what Alex<\/strong> calls “the glue or the spackle” to properly complete the songs.<\/p>\n “Luke<\/strong> is the connective tissue,” Alex<\/strong> said. “He can facilitate things that would’ve taken me 10 times as long\u2026 He knows where to put the solo, structure and organization.”<\/p>\n Alex<\/strong> also reflected on “Unfinished,” the last piece of music he and Eddie<\/strong> wrote together, included with the audiobook version of his memoir Brothers<\/em>. The instrumental track was intentionally left incomplete \u2014 a nod to Franz Schubert<\/strong>‘s famous “Unfinished Symphony,” a favorite of their father.<\/p>\n As for vocals on the new material, Alex<\/strong> revealed that Paul Rodgers<\/strong> (of Free<\/strong>) had been a top choice, but ultimately declined. “He knows he can’t do it \u2014 which I think is better than saying, \u2018Yeah, I can do it,’ and then not be able to do it,” Alex<\/strong> said.<\/p>\n When asked about other possibilities, including Robert Plant<\/strong> of Led Zeppelin<\/strong>, Alex<\/strong> acknowledged the idea but stressed that nothing is set in stone.<\/p>\n With Lukather<\/strong> helping shape the sessions and unreleased Van Halen<\/strong> recordings forming the foundation, Alex<\/strong> remains hopeful the right voice will emerge \u2014 and that the project will reach fruition in a way that properly honors his brother’s legacy.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n Enter your information below to get a daily update with all of our headlines and receive The Orchard Metal newsletter.<\/p>\n
