imagination as something almost untouchable\u2014a towering symbol of mountaineering history, not skiing possibility. <\/strong>For decades, the near-20,000-foot granite spire had been a proving ground for elite rock climbers. To Morrison, it represented something deeper: an unfinished idea waiting for someone to see it differently.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p data-start=\"558\" data-end=\"780\">\u201cI\u2019d always wanted to check them out,\u201d he said in a phone interview with <em>SnowBrains<\/em>. \u201cGrowing up reading stories about the world\u2019s greatest rock climbers climbing really hard granite at 20,000 feet\u2014I was totally blown away by those ascents.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p data-start=\"782\" data-end=\"1081\"><strong>His new documentary <em data-start=\"802\" data-end=\"810\">Trango<\/em> follows Morrison, Christina \u201cLusti\u201d Lustenberger, Nick McNutt, and Chantel Astorga as they complete the first ski descent of the iconic Karakoram peak.<\/strong> But the story begins years earlier, when the possibility first surfaced almost by accident.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-start=\"782\" data-end=\"1081\"><strong>Related: <\/strong><em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/snowbrains.com\/himalaya-500-a-project-to-ski-500-lines-in-the-planets-highest-mountain-range\/\" rel=\"bookmark\" data-modified-href=\"https:\/\/snowbrains.com\/himalaya-500-a-project-to-ski-500-lines-in-the-planets-highest-mountain-range\">Himalaya 500: A Project to Ski 500 Lines in the Planet\u2019s Highest Mountain Range<\/a><\/strong><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"782\" data-end=\"1081\"><strong>The expedition took shape after Lustenberger pitched a ski trip to Pakistan.<\/strong> Morrison initially agreed only on one condition: he wanted to trek near the Trango Towers to scout whether a ski line might even exist. In total, the team spent weeks waiting for the right moment. \u201cWhen you set an audacious goal and work at it really hard, it\u2019s very satisfying to achieve it,\u201d Morrison said. \u201cWhen I put my head on my pillow that night, I was supremely satisfied.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2908\" data-end=\"2945\"><strong>The skiing itself surprised even him.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2947\" data-end=\"3121\"><strong>\u201cI skied from the summit all the way back to the crevasse in one go,\u201d he said.<\/strong> \u201cIt took a minute and four seconds. I was going 50 miles an hour at times\u2014full-on shredding.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3158\" data-end=\"3268\"><strong>Despite the speed and exposure, Morrison said fear plays a precise and deliberate role in his decision-making. <\/strong>\u201cOh, certainly I feel fear,\u201d he said. \u201cThere\u2019s one side of fear that helps me stay sharp and focused and in the zone. The paralyzing side\u2014I just don\u2019t go there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3435\" data-end=\"3605\"><strong>For him, the greatest challenge on Trango was not technical risk, but collective resilience\u2014keeping a team motivated through illness, storms, and months of uncertainty. <\/strong>\u201cMy biggest fear was not being able to get everyone on the same page to give the mountain a really good try,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3759\" data-end=\"3970\"><strong>The emotional depth of Morrison\u2019s mountaineering life is also shaped by a profound personal loss.<\/strong> In 2022, his longtime partner, renowned ski mountaineer Hilaree Nelson, died during a descent on Nepal\u2019s Manaslu. That loss still echoes in his most significant achievements\u2014including his historic ski descent of Mount Everest\u2019s North Face in 2022, one of the most technically demanding descents ever completed.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p data-start=\"4172\" data-end=\"4320\">\u201cI spread a little bit of her ashes on the summit,\u201d Morrison said. \u201cI had a really special moment with her up top, and then throughout the descent.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p data-start=\"4322\" data-end=\"4456\"><strong>He described the Everest experience as intensely emotional\u2013not just a professional milestone, but the culmination of a shared dream. <\/strong>\u201cIt was really nice to pull that off and come back down and reflect on our lives together,\u201d he said. \u201cI kind of looked at the mountain from that point on with a totally different mindset.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4322\" data-end=\"4456\"><strong>While Everest remains one of the most technically difficult achievements of his career, Morrison describes Trango differently\u2014less as a singular triumph and more as a testament to perseverance. <\/strong>\u201cI think it\u2019s the most unique adventure I\u2019ve done,\u201d he said. \u201cProbably what sticks with me most is the perseverance\u2014trying over and over for two years and finally pulling it off.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5064\" data-end=\"5275\"><strong>For Morrison, the meaning lies in the patience, partnership, and the belief that new possibilities still exist even in the most storied landscapes.<\/strong> \u201cIt just means a ton to me,\u201d he said. \u201cHopefully it inspires other people. There are countless adventures out there to be had.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5064\" data-end=\"5275\">\u2014<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5064\" data-end=\"5275\"><em>The documentary has been screened at festivals and is now being released on video-on-demand and PBS, highlighting cinematic footage of the climb and descent and the intense conditions of the Karakoram.<\/em><\/p>\n<figure
