gone by; 30 years ago seems to be the sweet spot. But mid-90s Britain does seem to have been an especially abundant cultural moment. London, particularly, was a hotbed of activity \u2013 a moment when it seemed for once that the misfits and the weirdos were steering the ship. The YBA movement was still redefining the artworld, designers such as Alexander McQueen were emerging, swathes of independent bands dominated the mainstream, and a magazine called <em>Dazed &amp; Confused<\/em> launched its first issue.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Among the alternative music encroaching on the conservative mainstream, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/placebo\">Placebo<\/a> were one of the most provocative bands of the moment. They debuted in 1995 but had their big breakthrough in 1997 with their single, \u201cNancy Boy\u201d, with lyrics evoking an irresistible series of fragmented images of cross-dressing and gender ambiguity, promiscuity and drug-taking. Singer Brian Molko \u2013 an androgynous, chain-smoking doll with a transatlantic sneer \u2013 was the perfect poster-child for a mid-90s rockstar who took their cues from Ziggy Stardust and Iggy Pop rather than the machismo classic rock gods.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<figure class=\"inline-img expandable dev-view-hide\" data-img=\"4478f33f-859f-4267-969a-b3f700a952f3\" data-src=\"https:\/\/images-prod.dazeddigital.com\/2000\/azure\/dazed-prod\/1430\/8\/1438080.jpg\" data-img-aspect-ratio-type=\"landscape\" data-img-aspect-ratio=\"1.72\"><span class=\"has-css-custom-props image-container\" data-aspect-ratio-type=\"landscape\"><span class=\"preserve-aspect-ratio\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Scarlet Page, Exposed: 3 Years With Placebo\" class=\"img\" height=\"1749\" src=\"https:\/\/images-prod.dazeddigital.com\/786\/azure\/dazed-prod\/1430\/8\/1438080.jpg\" width=\"3000\"><\/span><\/span><figcaption class=\"img-caption\"><span class=\"credit\">Photography Scarlet Page<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><span>Photographer Scarlet Page first saw the band play live in 1996 at student union venues in London. \u201cBrian was wearing leopard print and mini dresses, with candy bracelets wrapped around the mic stand,\u201d she recalls. \u201cThey were completely arresting from the start.\u201d Shortly after, she was commissioned by music magazine <\/span><em><span>Kerrang!<\/span><\/em><span> to photograph them. She would continue to document their rise over the next three years, amassing an archive of intimate pictures of life in recording studios and on the road. Now, a new photo book, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.placeboworld.co.uk\/products\/scarlet-page-book?srsltid=AfmBOooAMO6secAtTN-Vqnw1Rk1f0MEFY_I5BFrllKPDQD4JosC5LuWL\"><em><span>Exposed: 3 Years With Placebo<\/span><\/em><\/a><span>, brings together Page\u2019s most striking and revealing images from her time up close and personal with the band, including never-before-seen portraits and candid, reportage images shot on film and presented in black and white (to coincide with the book\u2019s release, Page will be in conversation at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/gibsonguitaruk\/\">Gibson Garage London<\/a> on Monday 23 February as part of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DUlVWC6DzP6\/\">Garage Fest<\/a> \u2013 RSVP <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eventbrite.co.uk\/e\/in-conversation-with-scarlet-page-tickets-1982683683269\">here<\/a> for free entry).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>From the start, the photographer was drawn to Placebo for their energy. \u201cIt was raw, sexy, slightly seedy and completely reflective of the mid-90s. I\u2019d never seen anyone like Brian before. He could look incredibly beautiful, that drawl in his voice, strumming furiously on his guitar, completely unapologetic. There was a real \u2018I don\u2019t care what you think\u2019 attitude about him,\u201d she reflects. \u201cStefan [on bass] was tall and elegant and brought a different kind of presence. Together, they stood out instantly. Looking back, they were spearheading something that felt genuinely new.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<figure class=\"inline-img expandable dev-view-hide\" data-img=\"3a200ecd-d858-4f07-8905-b3f700a97cfe\" data-src=\"https:\/\/images-prod.dazeddigital.com\/1910\/azure\/dazed-prod\/1430\/8\/1438094.jpg\" data-img-aspect-ratio-type=\"portrait\" data-img-aspect-ratio=\"0.64\"><span class=\"has-css-custom-props image-container\" data-aspect-ratio-type=\"portrait\"><span class=\"preserve-aspect-ratio\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Scarlet Page, Exposed: 3 Years With Placebo\" class=\"img\" height=\"3000\" src=\"https:\/\/images-prod.dazeddigital.com\/786\/azure\/dazed-prod\/1430\/8\/1438094.jpg\" width=\"1910\"><\/span><\/span><figcaption class=\"img-caption\"><span class=\"credit\">Photography Scarlet Page<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><span>With unfettered access, Page was in a unique position to observe the band\u2019s life both onstage and behind closed doors. There\u2019s always something compelling about the slippage between public persona and private life. Were they as wild and louche offstage as their songs suggested? Page insists it wasn\u2019t all \u201cchampagne and chaos\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cIt was an exciting time \u2013\u00a0things were moving fast and the rise was intense,\u201d she tells Dazed, recalling huge hangovers after attending the premiere of Todd Haynes\u2019 <\/span><em><span>Velvet Goldmine<\/span><\/em><span> film premiere \u2013\u00a0a fictionalised history of the inception of glam rock in the 1970s, replete with thinly-veiled avatars of Bowie, Iggy Pop, Lou Reed et al \u2013\u00a0in which Placebo featured. It was a star-studded moment. Their major album <\/span><em><span>Without You I\u2019m Nothing<\/span><\/em><span> was on the verge of being released, \u201ceverything was starting to tip into another level\u201d. It was a heady time. <\/span><em><span>Exposed <\/span><\/em><span>shows the highs but also the lows that fans didn\u2019t get to see. \u201cWhat I love is the contrast,\u201d she tells us, \u201cthe grimy backstage dressing rooms, service station stops for burgers, a hotel on a roundabout on the outskirts of Walsall with admin and bills spread across the dressing room floor. The book captures something more human \u2013 survival on the road, the in-between moments. It\u2019s a flip side to the glossy press images; more honest, more gritty.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>This was a time before social media; a time before celebrities were adept at performing their \u201creal\u201d selves for promotional purposes. There was still a veil between public persona and backstage; still a sense of impermeability between gazing at a band onstage or on television and being able to access them. But mid-90s Britain does seem to have been an especially abundant cultural moment. London, particularly, was a hotbed of activity \u2013 a moment when it seemed for once that the misfits and the weirdos were steering the ship. The YBA movement was still redefining the artworld, designers such as Alexander McQueen were emerging, swathes of independent bands dominated the mainstream, and a magazine called <em>Dazed &amp; Confused<\/em> launched its first issue.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Among the alternative music encroaching on the conservative mainstream, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/placebo\">Placebo<\/a> were one of the most provocative bands of the moment. They debuted in 1995 but had their big breakthrough in 1997 with their single, \u201cNancy Boy\u201d, with lyrics evoking an irresistible series of fragmented images of cross-dressing and gender ambiguity, promiscuity and drug-taking. Singer Brian Molko \u2013 an androgynous, chain-smoking doll with a transatlantic sneer \u2013 was the perfect poster-child for a mid-90s rockstar who took their cues from Ziggy Stardust and Iggy Pop rather than the machismo classic rock gods.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<figure class=\"inline-img expandable dev-view-hide\" data-img=\"4478f33f-859f-4267-969a-b3f700a952f3\" data-src=\"https:\/\/images-prod.dazeddigital.com\/2000\/azure\/dazed-prod\/1430\/8\/1438080.jpg\" data-img-aspect-ratio-type=\"landscape\" data-img-aspect-ratio=\"1.72\"><span class=\"has-css-custom-props image-container\" data-aspect-ratio-type=\"landscape\"><span class=\"preserve-aspect-ratio\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Scarlet Page, Exposed: 3 Years With Placebo\" class=\"img\" height=\"1749\" src=\"https:\/\/images-prod.dazeddigital.com\/786\/azure\/dazed-prod\/1430\/8\/1438080.jpg\" width=\"3000\"><\/span><\/span><figcaption class=\"img-caption\"><span class=\"credit\">Photography Scarlet Page<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><span>Photographer Scarlet Page first saw the band play live in 1996 at student union venues in London. \u201cBrian was wearing leopard print and mini dresses, with candy bracelets wrapped around the mic stand,\u201d she recalls. \u201cThey were completely arresting from the start.\u201d Shortly after, she was commissioned by music magazine <\/span><em><span>Kerrang!<\/span><\/em><span> to photograph them. She would continue to document their rise over the next three years, amassing an archive of intimate pictures of life in recording studios and on the road. Now, a new photo book, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.placeboworld.co.uk\/products\/scarlet-page-book?srsltid=AfmBOooAMO6secAtTN-Vqnw1Rk1f0MEFY_I5BFrllKPDQD4JosC5LuWL\"><em><span>Exposed: 3 Years With Placebo<\/span><\/em><\/a><span>, brings together Page\u2019s most striking and revealing images from her time up close and personal with the band, including never-before-seen portraits and candid, reportage images shot on film and presented in black and white (to coincide with the book\u2019s release, Page will be in conversation at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/gibsonguitaruk\/\">Gibson Garage London<\/a> on Monday 23 February as part of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DUlVWC6DzP6\/\">Garage Fest<\/a> \u2013 RSVP <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eventbrite.co.uk\/e\/in-conversation-with-scarlet-page-tickets-1982683683269\">here<\/a> for free entry).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>From the start, the photographer was drawn to Placebo for their energy. \u201cIt was raw, sexy, slightly seedy and completely reflective of the mid-90s. I\u2019d never seen anyone like Brian before. He could look incredibly beautiful, that drawl in his voice, strumming furiously on his guitar, completely unapologetic. There was a real \u2018I don\u2019t care what you think\u2019 attitude about him,\u201d she reflects. \u201cStefan [on bass] was tall and elegant and brought a different kind of presence. Together, they stood out instantly. There\u2019s always something compelling about the slippage between public persona and private life. Were they as wild and louche offstage as their songs suggested? Page insists it wasn\u2019t all \u201cchampagne and chaos\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cIt was an exciting time \u2013\u00a0things were moving fast and the rise was intense,\u201d she tells Dazed, recalling huge hangovers after attending the premiere of Todd Haynes\u2019 <\/span><em><span>Velvet Goldmine<\/span><\/em><span> film premiere \u2013\u00a0a fictionalised history of the inception of glam rock in the 1970s, replete with thinly-veiled avatars of Bowie, Iggy Pop, Lou Reed et al \u2013\u00a0in which Placebo featured. It was a star-studded moment. Their major album <\/span><em><span>Without You I\u2019m Nothing<\/span><\/em><span> was on the verge of being released, \u201ceverything was starting to tip into another level\u201d. It was a heady time. <\/span><em><span>Exposed <\/span><\/em><span>shows the highs but also the lows that fans didn\u2019t get to see. \u201cWhat I love is the contrast,\u201d she tells us, \u201cthe grimy backstage dressing rooms, service station stops for burgers, a hotel on a roundabout on the outskirts of Walsall with admin and bills spread across the dressing room floor. The book captures something more human \u2013 survival on the road, the in-between moments. It\u2019s a flip side to the glossy press images; more honest, more gritty.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>This was a time before social media; a time before celebrities were adept at performing their \u201creal\u201d selves for promotional purposes. There was still a veil between public persona and backstage; still a sense of impermeability between gazing at a band onstage or on television and being able to access them.
