says Hasan Hadi. \u201cIt was an uphill battle to make this film. I feel like it opens the door for other artists in Iraq.\u201d Hadi, a 37-year-old Iraqi writer-director, is in a Holborn office, talking to me about his debut feature, <em>The President\u2019s Cake<\/em>. After premiering at Cannes, where it won the Camera d\u2019Or, the deft coming-of-ager is Iraq\u2019s first film to reach the Oscars shortlist for International Feature. It\u2019s also an utter crowd-pleaser. \u201cI\u2019m happy with the awards we\u2019re receiving,\u201d he says. \u201cBut the dream is that the film gets seen by the general public.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s January, a week before the Oscar nominations announcement (the film sadly didn\u2019t make the final five), and Hadi speaks as if he\u2019s still in disbelief that <em>The President\u2019s Cake<\/em> exists. He describes to me the pitching process: a period-drama with a nine-year-old protagonist; an ensemble comprising non-actors; and it all has to be shot in Iraq. \u201cI\u2019d tell investors, and they\u2019d feel like they\u2019re losing money already,\u201d he says with a laugh. \u201cWhen your characters are in Iraq, speaking Arabic, it feels really \u2018foreign\u2019 to English-speaking audiences.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The action unfolds in Iraq, in 1995 (the year isn\u2019t specified, but Hadi tells me it\u2019s 1995), a time when Saddam Hussein\u2019s birthday is a national holiday, and, in each classroom, a child is picked at random to bake a cake to honour the dictator. Out of a box, 9-year-old Lamia\u2019s name is selected, and she doesn\u2019t dare protest, even when the teacher insists it must be a large cake with extra cream. When told \u201ccongratulations\u201d, the child\u2019s solemn face clearly disagrees.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"src-youtube video-container embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"media-youtube\" data-id=\"ovHvYXbNSwo\"><span class=\"preserve-aspect-ratio\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" allowfullscreen frameborder height=\"422\" scrolling=\"no\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ovHvYXbNSwo\" webkitallowfullscreen width=\"750\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p>After all, Lamia, played wonderfully by first-time actor Baneen Ahmad Nayyef, has to accrue eggs, flour, and sugar during a period of international sanctions against Iraq. Amidst extreme poverty, Lamia and her grandmother, Bibi (Waheed Thabet Khreibat), are barely surviving as it is in the Mesopotamian marshes. In the streets of Bagdad, Lamia\u2019s attempts to attain food items lead to encounters with predators, criminals, and other Iraqis also on the brink of despair.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wanted it to feel like a fairytale told from a child\u2019s point of view,\u201d says Hadi. \u201cThe audience are more receptive to their world. Children aren\u2019t biased. They show you the world as it is. And it was also my experience as a child.\u201d Hadi grew up in Iraq but it was another classmate who was selected to bake a cake for Saddam Hussein. He did, though, experience air raids, just like in the film. \u201cIt\u2019s frightening. You always see the F-16 roaming around.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Darkly comedic and full of foreboding tension, the gorgeously shot arthouse drama captures a side of Iraq rarely seen in movies. Early scenes depict the serene beauty of the marshes as citizens commute by canoe beneath a blue, painterly sky. At night, Lamia and Bibi cross the same wetlands while paddling with an oar, the pair gradually realising they\u2019re swaying towards a burning building. Often, the camera remains at Lamia\u2019s height; in one scene involving flour theft, the surroundings adults aren\u2019t seen from above their shoulders.<\/p>\n<p>For this adventure, Lamia is joined by her pet rooster, Hindi, and her best friend, Saeed (Sajad Mohamad Qasem). The pair\u2019s exuberance is matched by kinetic camera movements and a propulsive storyline: each negotiation and attempt to purchase an ingredient (or steal it) is fraught with danger. Hadi\u2019s script is also generous with gallows humour. For instance, a blind man they hitchhike with jokes that he\u2019s been blessed with no longer having to worry about what his wife looks like. \u201cYou can be fully depressed and unable to function, or you can ridicule your pain,\u201d says Hadi. \u201cHumour is the only way to survive.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<blockquote>\n<p>You can be fully depressed and unable to function, or you can ridicule your pain. Humour is the only way to survive<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p>Growing up in Iraq, Hadi became a cinephile through smuggled VHS cassettes he watched at night. As a child, he devoured everything from Bruce Lee and <em>Baby Day\u2019s Out<\/em> to Kurosawa and Tarkovsky. \u201cWhen I watched <em>Godzilla<\/em> and <em>The Terminator<\/em>, I felt like there was a fire inside me coming to life. But I\u2019m also influenced by Italian neorealism, like De Sica and Rossellini, and Spanish magical realism, like Carlos Saura, and Antonioni and Kiarostami.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Moving to New York, Hadi studied filmmaking at NYU where he was mentored by Todd Solondz, the director of <em>Happiness<\/em>, <em>Palindromes<\/em>, and <em>Welcome to the Dollhouse<\/em>. While Solondz may seem like an unlikely match for <em>The President\u2019s Cake<\/em>, an overlap is apparent: the dark, bitter humour; an outspoken child protagonist in a cruel, unforgiving environment; and, as Hadi puts it, \u201c[Solondz] appreciates good art. <em>Happiness<\/em> isn\u2019t the kind of film I\u2019d made, but I appreciate it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hadi particularly remembers Solondz advising him that a director\u2019s job isn\u2019t to follow the script. \u201cThat would make you a contractor,\u201d says Hadi. \u201cHe said that if you\u2019re an artist, inspiration is going to keep coming.\u201d Thus, on set, Hadi embraced improvisation and flexibility with locations, dialogue, and even characters. When one scene in a hospital didn\u2019t work, Hadi had two actors swap their roles.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<figure class=\"inline-img expandable dev-view-hide\" data-img=\"5d687e42-df60-4d2b-8126-b3f700f58803\" data-src=\"https:\/\/images-prod.dazeddigital.com\/2000\/azure\/dazed-prod\/1430\/8\/1438132.jpg\" data-img-aspect-ratio-type=\"landscape\" data-img-aspect-ratio=\"1.5\"><span class=\"has-css-custom-props image-container\" data-aspect-ratio-type=\"landscape\"><span class=\"preserve-aspect-ratio\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"The President\u2019s Cake\" class=\"img\" height=\"1334\" src=\"https:\/\/images-prod.dazeddigital.com\/786\/azure\/dazed-prod\/1430\/8\/1438132.jpg\" width=\"2000\"><\/span><\/span><figcaption class=\"img-caption\"><span class=\"credit\">The President\u2019s Cake<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p>\u201cWith non-actors, you have to change the melody of the dialogue so that it works. I told the teacher, \u2018The students don\u2019t respect you. They laugh at you in between shots.\u2019 The tension there was real. I didn\u2019t need to fake it. He really was pissed.\u201d Remarkably, Nayyef was only cast as Lamia days before the shoot. \u201cWhen we auditioned her, she was very shy. People thought I was making a big mistake. Thank God, I could see through that. Shyness, you can take away. With non-actors, you get to know them, and you see what they\u2019re capable of.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Despite only having a short (<em>Swimsuit<\/em>) to his name, Hadi turned down financing opportunities that would require shooting the film in Morocco or Jordan. Few films get shot in Iraq, and the most famous examples are only brief sequences, like the opening of <em>The Exorcist<\/em>. \u201cI\u2019m not against shooting in Morocco,\u201d he says. \u201cBut this story needed to be shot in real locations in Iraq, whether it\u2019s the marshes or the restaurant. That\u2019s why we\u2019ve got such an emotional response from the local audience in Iraq, or the diaspora. They\u2019re like, \u2018They speak the accent I grew up with. It\u2019s the same streets I witnessed.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While Hadi rattled off a long list of his influences, he clarifies that he wants his voice to be a singular expression of his identity. He uses the example of a poet who one day has to write their own poetry. He then refers to a scene where Bibi\u2019s cloth flies away. \u201cIt\u2019s an image I remember from when I was a child, and one of our relatives died. They took the body to the holy sites, and then they brought her back to the house. They were like, \u2018The soul doesn\u2019t rise to the sky until they visit their house.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I wrote that scene with them going back to the marshes with Bibi, I was like, \u2018That\u2019s the moment the soul rises to the sky.\u2019 Those filmmaking influences cultivated my mind to create such images.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The President\u2019s Cake<em> is out in UK cinemas on February 13.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"newsletter-inline-last\">\n<div class=\"newsletter-small\">\n<div class=\"inner\">\n<h1 class=\"newsletter-title\">Escape the algorithm! I feel like it opens the door for other artists in Iraq.\u201d Hadi, a 37-year-old Iraqi writer-director, is in a Holborn office, talking to me about his debut feature, <em>The President\u2019s Cake<\/em>. After premiering at Cannes, where it won the Camera d\u2019Or, the deft coming-of-ager is Iraq\u2019s first film to reach the Oscars shortlist for International Feature. It\u2019s also an utter crowd-pleaser. \u201cI\u2019m happy with the awards we\u2019re receiving,\u201d he says. \u201cBut the dream is that the film gets seen by the general public.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s January, a week before the Oscar nominations announcement (the film sadly didn\u2019t make the final five), and Hadi speaks as if he\u2019s still in disbelief that <em>The President\u2019s Cake<\/em> exists. He describes to me the pitching process: a period-drama with a nine-year-old protagonist; an ensemble comprising non-actors; and it all has to be shot in Iraq. \u201cI\u2019d tell investors, and they\u2019d feel like they\u2019re losing money already,\u201d he says with a laugh. \u201cWhen your characters are in Iraq, speaking Arabic, it feels really \u2018foreign\u2019 to English-speaking audiences.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The action unfolds in Iraq, in 1995 (the year isn\u2019t specified, but Hadi tells me it\u2019s 1995), a time when Saddam Hussein\u2019s birthday is a national holiday, and, in each classroom, a child is picked at random to bake a cake to honour the dictator. Out of a box, 9-year-old Lamia\u2019s name is selected, and she doesn\u2019t dare protest, even when the teacher insists it must be a large cake with extra cream. When told \u201ccongratulations\u201d, the child\u2019s solemn face clearly disagrees.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"src-youtube video-container embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"media-youtube\" data-id=\"ovHvYXbNSwo\"><span class=\"preserve-aspect-ratio\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" allowfullscreen frameborder height=\"422\" scrolling=\"no\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ovHvYXbNSwo\" webkitallowfullscreen width=\"750\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p>After all, Lamia, played wonderfully by first-time actor Baneen Ahmad Nayyef, has to accrue eggs, flour, and sugar during a period of international sanctions against Iraq. Amidst extreme poverty, Lamia and her grandmother, Bibi (Waheed Thabet Khreibat), are barely surviving as it is in the Mesopotamian marshes. In the streets of Bagdad, Lamia\u2019s attempts to attain food items lead to encounters with predators, criminals, and other Iraqis also on the brink of despair.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wanted it to feel like a fairytale told from a child\u2019s point of view,\u201d says Hadi. \u201cThe audience are more receptive to their world. Children aren\u2019t biased. They show you the world as it is. And it was also my experience as a child.\u201d Hadi grew up in Iraq but it was another classmate who was selected to bake a cake for Saddam Hussein. He did, though, experience air raids, just like in the film. \u201cIt\u2019s frightening. You always see the F-16 roaming around.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Darkly comedic and full of foreboding tension, the gorgeously shot arthouse drama captures a side of Iraq rarely seen in movies. Early scenes depict the serene beauty of the marshes as citizens commute by canoe beneath a blue, painterly sky. At night, Lamia and Bibi cross the same wetlands while paddling with an oar, the pair gradually realising they\u2019re swaying towards a burning building. Often, the camera remains at Lamia\u2019s height; in one scene involving flour theft, the surroundings adults aren\u2019t seen from above their shoulders.<\/p>\n<p>For this adventure, Lamia is joined by her pet rooster, Hindi, and her best friend, Saeed (Sajad Mohamad Qasem). The pair\u2019s exuberance is matched by kinetic camera movements and a propulsive storyline: each negotiation and attempt to purchase an ingredient (or steal it) is fraught with danger. Hadi\u2019s script is also generous with gallows humour. For instance, a blind man they hitchhike with jokes that he\u2019s been blessed with no longer having to worry about what his wife looks like. \u201cYou can be fully depressed and unable to function, or you can ridicule your pain,\u201d says Hadi. \u201cHumour is the only way to survive.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<blockquote>\n<p>You can be fully depressed and unable to function, or you can ridicule your pain. Humour is the only way to survive<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p>Growing up in Iraq, Hadi became a cinephile through smuggled VHS cassettes he watched at night. As a child, he devoured everything from Bruce Lee and <em>Baby Day\u2019s Out<\/em> to Kurosawa and Tarkovsky. \u201cWhen I watched <em>Godzilla<\/em> and <em>The Terminator<\/em>, I felt like there was a fire inside me coming to life. But I\u2019m also influenced by Italian neorealism, like De Sica and Rossellini, and Spanish magical realism, like Carlos Saura, and Antonioni and Kiarostami.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Moving to New York, Hadi studied filmmaking at NYU where he was mentored by Todd Solondz, the director of <em>Happiness<\/em>, <em>Palindromes<\/em>, and <em>Welcome to the Dollhouse<\/em>. While Solondz may seem like an unlikely match for <em>The President\u2019s Cake<\/em>, an overlap is apparent: the dark, bitter humour; an outspoken child protagonist in a cruel, unforgiving environment; and, as Hadi puts it, \u201c[Solondz] appreciates good art. <em>Happiness<\/em> isn\u2019t the kind of film I\u2019d made, but I appreciate it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hadi particularly remembers Solondz advising him that a director\u2019s job isn\u2019t to follow the script. \u201cThat would make you a contractor,\u201d says Hadi. \u201cHe said that if you\u2019re an artist, inspiration is going to keep coming.\u201d Thus, on set, Hadi embraced improvisation and flexibility with locations, dialogue, and even characters. When one scene in a hospital didn\u2019t work, Hadi had two actors swap their roles.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<figure class=\"inline-img expandable dev-view-hide\" data-img=\"5d687e42-df60-4d2b-8126-b3f700f58803\" data-src=\"https:\/\/images-prod.dazeddigital.com\/2000\/azure\/dazed-prod\/1430\/8\/1438132.jpg\" data-img-aspect-ratio-type=\"landscape\" data-img-aspect-ratio=\"1.5\"><span class=\"has-css-custom-props image-container\" data-aspect-ratio-type=\"landscape\"><span class=\"preserve-aspect-ratio\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"The President\u2019s Cake\" class=\"img\" height=\"1334\" src=\"https:\/\/images-prod.dazeddigital.com\/786\/azure\/dazed-prod\/1430\/8\/1438132.jpg\" width=\"2000\"><\/span><\/span><figcaption class=\"img-caption\"><span class=\"credit\">The President\u2019s Cake<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p>\u201cWith non-actors, you have to change the melody of the dialogue so that it works. I told the teacher, \u2018The students don\u2019t respect you. They laugh at you in between shots.\u2019 The tension there was real. I didn\u2019t need to fake it. He really was pissed.\u201d Remarkably, Nayyef was only cast as Lamia days before the shoot. \u201cWhen we auditioned her, she was very shy. People thought I was making a big mistake. Thank God, I could see through that. Shyness, you can take away. With non-actors, you get to know them, and you see what they\u2019re capable of.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Despite only having a short (<em>Swimsuit<\/em>) to his name, Hadi turned down financing opportunities that would require shooting the film in Morocco or Jordan. Few films get shot in Iraq, and the most famous examples are only brief sequences, like the opening of <em>The Exorcist<\/em>. \u201cI\u2019m not against shooting in Morocco,\u201d he says. \u201cBut this story needed to be shot in real locations in Iraq, whether it\u2019s the marshes or the restaurant. That\u2019s why we\u2019ve got such an emotional response from the local audience in Iraq, or the diaspora. They\u2019re like, \u2018They speak the accent I grew up with. It\u2019s the same streets I witnessed.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While Hadi rattled off a long list of his influences, he clarifies that he wants his voice to be a singular expression of his identity. He uses the example of a poet who one day has to write their own poetry. He then refers to a scene where Bibi\u2019s cloth flies away. \u201cIt\u2019s an image I remember from when I was a child, and one of our relatives died. They took the body to the holy sites, and then they brought her back to the house.
