Because there have been so many fire song selections this year.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>OK, fire might be a slight overstatement, but there has definitely been a push towards making figure skating more accessible at this year\u2019s Winter Olympics \u2013 in addition to the familiar classical compositions, song choices are being increasingly pulled from popular culture (to varying degrees of success). We\u2019ve seen voguing to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/lady-gaga\">Lady Gaga<\/a>, Travolta-style finger points to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/daft-punk\">Daft Punk<\/a>, and even some rather cringeworthy <\/span><em><span>Fortnite <\/span><\/em><span>dances.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cNow, you\u2019re seeing skaters take risks,\u201d figure skating expert and ESPN editor Adam Reisinger said <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thefader.com\/2026\/02\/12\/alysa-liu-hair-stylist-alternative-ice-skater\"><span>earlier this month<\/span><\/a><span>. \u201c[US figure skater] Amber Glenn is doing \u2018Like a Prayer\u2019 this year, and [her teammate] Alysa has her Lady Gaga program. Skaters are performing to what they like, not just what they think will impress the judges.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>This modernisation has also been accompanied by an increasing social media presence of the contestants, with various musicians offering words of encouragement to the skaters who have decided to use their music (or, in Ilia Malinin\u2019s case, purely in awe of his aura). But, as the 2026 Winter Olympics draw to a close this weekend, which of these song choices were the best? And which figure skater left with the most aura?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Below, we break down the best and worst musical moments from this year\u2019s Winter Olympics, with the help of Dazed\u2019s signature (and entirely arbitrary) aura points\u2122 metric.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><span>AI SLOP\u00a0<\/span><\/h1>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"media-tiktok\" data-id=\"7568603708498611458\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><span>Czech figure skaters Katerina Mrazkova and Daniel Mrazek were on the news for all the wrong reasons this Olympic season after not one, but <\/span><em><span>two <\/span><\/em><span>scandals surrounding the use of AI music during their performances. The first arrived months before the opening ceremony, in which Mrazkova and Mrazek sparked controversy for plagiarising the New Radicals\u2019 \u201cYou Get What You Give\u201d with AI-generated audio during their November rehearsals.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>However, the pair doubled down in their official Olympics routine, skating to an AI-generated medley imitating both \u201cRaise Your Hands\u201d by Bon Jovi and \u201cThunderstruck\u201d by AC\/DC. Mrazek even appeared to acknowledge the plagiarism with his outfit, which featured the letters KM DM bisected by a red lightning bolt on his back, much like AC\/DC\u2019s official logo. This might have seemed like a creative way to avoid copyright violations, but, in music at least, copyright exists for a reason \u2013 artists deserve to get paid for their work!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>This moment wasn\u2019t the only AI scandal at the Winter Olympics this year. Elsewhere, the Olympic committee themselves were drawn into controversy after fans reported spotting traces of alleged AI generation in a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/venturetwins\/status\/2020350612148498843?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E2020569840818229440%7Ctwgr%5Ecfa3ad6bb9c869f447ec4d7f70e028f31b87f7ad%7Ctwcon%5Es3_&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fsports.yahoo.com%2Farticles%2Fviewers-slam-winter-olympics-over-234500044.html\"><span>now-deleted animated promotional video<\/span><\/a><span> for the event. Let\u2019s hope this is all a learning experience and the Olympic committee decides not to replace real artists with evil machines moving forward.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8211; 1 million aura points<\/strong><\/p>\n<h1><span>DESPICABLE YOU\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/h1>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"instagram-container embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"media-instagram\" data-script-depends=\"instagram-embeds\">\n<script async src=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/embed.js\"><\/script><\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><span>In the run-up to his appearance in Milan this year, Spanish figure skater Tom\u00e0s-Lloren\u00e7 Guarino Sabat\u00e9 made headlines when he got caught up in a copyright dispute with Universal Music over his choice to use a musical medley lifted from the <\/span><em><span>Despicable Me<\/span><\/em><span> franchise. His request was initially denied by the mega-label, but this decision was then reversed days before the event. Unfortunately, we think this idea should\u2019ve stayed in the bin.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Appearing in a <\/span><em><span>Minions<\/span><\/em><span>-themed costume in his routine, Sabat\u00e9 performed a number of moves lifted from <\/span><em><span>Fortnite <\/span><\/em><span>while a cheesy Minions montage played in the background. It was a shameless attempt at appealing to Gen Alpha, but it ended up coming across as rather beta in our books.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8211; 10,400 aura points (one for every Minion created)<\/strong><\/p>\n<h1><span>TAYLOR SWIFT\u2019S SHOWGIRLS\u00a0<\/span><\/h1>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"media-tiktok\" data-id=\"7607587319675227406\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><span>Now, look, we love the Blade Angels \u2013 Team USA\u2019s star skating trio composed of Amber Glenn, Alysa Liu, and Isabeau Levito. We particularly love Liu, who has featured endlessly in Instagram fan edits for her love of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/charli-xcx\">Charli xcx<\/a> and PinkPantheress \u2013 the latter even offered a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/reels\/DU1eOZgja6C\/\"><span>message of support<\/span><\/a><span> to the skating star ahead of her performances this year. Meanwhile, Glenn received a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/reels\/DU3uDabDRCt\/\"><span>video of encouragement<\/span><\/a><span> from none other than Madonna after skating to \u201cLike a Prayer\u201d at the event.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>So, it\u2019s because we love the Blade Angels so much, that we are handing out <\/span><strong>one single aura point <\/strong><span>for the two-minute-long promo video that Taylor Swift has created for them. Just imagine how much cooler a video from Charli, PinkPantheress, or \u2013 get this \u2013 Bladee would have been? (Ok, Swift\u2019s message was actually very well done and is a massive achievement for the trio, but they deserve even more!!!)\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>+ 1 aura point<\/strong><\/p>\n<h1><span>CALF PUNK\u00a0<\/span><\/h1>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"instagram-container embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"media-instagram\" data-script-depends=\"instagram-embeds\">\n<script async src=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/embed.js\"><\/script><\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><span>Moving into aura surplus territory, we have French figure skating duo Evgeniia Lopareva and Geoffrey Brissaud, who worked their calves to the sounds of Daft Punk\u2019s \u201cAround the World\u201d this year. The Winter Olympics briefly resembled a roller arena as the pair performed body pops and grooves to the electronic track, culminating in a flashy finish. It\u2019s certainly not the coolest electronic track out there, but points are due for trying something new.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>+ 50 aura points<\/strong><\/p>\n<h1><strong>(SP)ICE GIRLS<\/strong><\/h1>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"src-youtube video-container embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"media-youtube\" data-id=\"ZGJ4IsPUtRs\"><span class=\"preserve-aspect-ratio\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" allowfullscreen frameborder height=\"422\" scrolling=\"no\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ZGJ4IsPUtRs\" webkitallowfullscreen width=\"750\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><span>The clue\u2019s really in the name, isn\u2019t it? This year, British duo Lilah Fear and Louis Gibson celebrated \u2018Girl Power\u2019 group Spice Girls with a medley including \u201cSpice Up Your Life\u201d, \u201cViva Forever\u201d and \u201cWannabe\u201d, with Fear rocking a sequin Union Jack dress and Gibson wearing Mel B\u2019s signature leopard print to complete the Britpop motif. The duo\u2019s song choice caught the attention of group members Mel B and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/programmes\/p0mzj5q0\"><span>Mel C<\/span><\/a><span>, who both submitted messages of support prior to the performance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>+ 75 aura points<\/strong><\/p>\n<h1><span>THE CROWD GOES GAGA<\/span><\/h1>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"instagram-container embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"media-instagram\" data-script-depends=\"instagram-embeds\">\n<script async src=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/embed.js\"><\/script><\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><span>Continuing France\u2019s trend of eccentric song choices, French figure skater Kevin Aymoz quickly became a fan favourite this year after performing a flamboyant routine to Lady Gaga\u2019s \u201cJudas\u201d \u2013 the second time he has performed to the song. Replete with the exaggerated arm movements and some light voguing that feature frequently in Aymoz\u2019 routines, the moment was also notable for drawing one of the biggest crowd reactions of the event. \u201c<\/span><span>\u201cA piano for my emotions, Lady Gaga to my rage,\u201d he <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DNELXxxC432\"><span>wrote on Instagram<\/span><\/a><span> prior to the performance. \u201c[This is] a program that talks about me, in fire, in fragility, in truth. In the last year, she has skated to 88rising star Joji\u2019s \u201cSlow Dancing in the Dark\u201d and a Lady Gaga medley, but it was her skate to \u201cPromise\u201d by 26-year-old Icelandic singer Laufey that won her her second gold at this year\u2019s Olympics.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>On some level, Laufey is actually a musical analogue for what Alysa has achieved in figure skating: becoming the Gen Z face of an old and noble discipline. Much like how Laufey has breathed new life into classical music and become one of the most-streamed artists in the world, Liu\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.olympics.com\/en\/milano-cortina-2026\/news\/alysa-liu-returns-on-her-own-terms-with-milano-cortina-approaching\"><span>refusal to conform<\/span><\/a><span> to some of figure skating\u2019s stricter traditions has led her to become a fan favourite. The 21-year-old American figure skater might have earned his first Olympic gold medal this year for the figure skating team event, but the so-called \u2018Quad God\u2019 (gaining his name after becoming the only skater to ever land a complete quadruple Axel at an international competition) has long held a different legacy: figure skating\u2019s biggest hip hop head. Over the years, Malinin has skated to everything from the <\/span><em><span>Succession <\/span><\/em><span>theme song (in which he won the highest figure skating score ever awarded at an international competition) to various tracks by Michigan rapper NF. This year, however, Malinin doubled down on his rap repertoire with the niche selection of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=5Z31ZmuKVKs\"><span>\u201cThe Lost Crown\u201d<\/span><\/a><span> by German producers 2WEI and Joznez, and Canadian rapper Kataem lifted from 2024 video game <\/span><em><span>The Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown<\/span><\/em><span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>This legacy seems to have attracted none other than Snoop Dogg as a fan, who <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=-UbctV1kHQQ\"><span>appeared in the sidelines<\/span><\/a><span> during one of Malinin\u2019s rehearsals wearing a t-shirt of Malinin\u2019s face. Because there have been so many fire song selections this year.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>OK, fire might be a slight overstatement, but there has definitely been a push towards making figure skating more accessible at this year\u2019s Winter Olympics \u2013 in addition to the familiar classical compositions, song choices are being increasingly pulled from popular culture (to varying degrees of success). We\u2019ve seen voguing to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/lady-gaga\">Lady Gaga<\/a>, Travolta-style finger points to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/daft-punk\">Daft Punk<\/a>, and even some rather cringeworthy <\/span><em><span>Fortnite <\/span><\/em><span>dances.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cNow, you\u2019re seeing skaters take risks,\u201d figure skating expert and ESPN editor Adam Reisinger said <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thefader.com\/2026\/02\/12\/alysa-liu-hair-stylist-alternative-ice-skater\"><span>earlier this month<\/span><\/a><span>. \u201c[US figure skater] Amber Glenn is doing \u2018Like a Prayer\u2019 this year, and [her teammate] Alysa has her Lady Gaga program. Skaters are performing to what they like, not just what they think will impress the judges.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>This modernisation has also been accompanied by an increasing social media presence of the contestants, with various musicians offering words of encouragement to the skaters who have decided to use their music (or, in Ilia Malinin\u2019s case, purely in awe of his aura). But, as the 2026 Winter Olympics draw to a close this weekend, which of these song choices were the best? And which figure skater left with the most aura?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Below, we break down the best and worst musical moments from this year\u2019s Winter Olympics, with the help of Dazed\u2019s signature (and entirely arbitrary) aura points\u2122 metric.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><span>AI SLOP\u00a0<\/span><\/h1>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"media-tiktok\" data-id=\"7568603708498611458\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><span>Czech figure skaters Katerina Mrazkova and Daniel Mrazek were on the news for all the wrong reasons this Olympic season after not one, but <\/span><em><span>two <\/span><\/em><span>scandals surrounding the use of AI music during their performances. The first arrived months before the opening ceremony, in which Mrazkova and Mrazek sparked controversy for plagiarising the New Radicals\u2019 \u201cYou Get What You Give\u201d with AI-generated audio during their November rehearsals.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>However, the pair doubled down in their official Olympics routine, skating to an AI-generated medley imitating both \u201cRaise Your Hands\u201d by Bon Jovi and \u201cThunderstruck\u201d by AC\/DC. Mrazek even appeared to acknowledge the plagiarism with his outfit, which featured the letters KM DM bisected by a red lightning bolt on his back, much like AC\/DC\u2019s official logo. This might have seemed like a creative way to avoid copyright violations, but, in music at least, copyright exists for a reason \u2013 artists deserve to get paid for their work!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>This moment wasn\u2019t the only AI scandal at the Winter Olympics this year. Elsewhere, the Olympic committee themselves were drawn into controversy after fans reported spotting traces of alleged AI generation in a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/venturetwins\/status\/2020350612148498843?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E2020569840818229440%7Ctwgr%5Ecfa3ad6bb9c869f447ec4d7f70e028f31b87f7ad%7Ctwcon%5Es3_&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fsports.yahoo.com%2Farticles%2Fviewers-slam-winter-olympics-over-234500044.html\"><span>now-deleted animated promotional video<\/span><\/a><span> for the event. Let\u2019s hope this is all a learning experience and the Olympic committee decides not to replace real artists with evil machines moving forward.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8211; 1 million aura points<\/strong><\/p>\n<h1><span>DESPICABLE YOU\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/h1>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"instagram-container embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"media-instagram\" data-script-depends=\"instagram-embeds\">\n<script async src=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/embed.js\"><\/script><\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><span>In the run-up to his appearance in Milan this year, Spanish figure skater Tom\u00e0s-Lloren\u00e7 Guarino Sabat\u00e9 made headlines when he got caught up in a copyright dispute with Universal Music over his choice to use a musical medley lifted from the <\/span><em><span>Despicable Me<\/span><\/em><span> franchise. His request was initially denied by the mega-label, but this decision was then reversed days before the event. Unfortunately, we think this idea should\u2019ve stayed in the bin.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Appearing in a <\/span><em><span>Minions<\/span><\/em><span>-themed costume in his routine, Sabat\u00e9 performed a number of moves lifted from <\/span><em><span>Fortnite <\/span><\/em><span>while a cheesy Minions montage played in the background. It was a shameless attempt at appealing to Gen Alpha, but it ended up coming across as rather beta in our books.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8211; 10,400 aura points (one for every Minion created)<\/strong><\/p>\n<h1><span>TAYLOR SWIFT\u2019S SHOWGIRLS\u00a0<\/span><\/h1>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"media-tiktok\" data-id=\"7607587319675227406\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><span>Now, look, we love the Blade Angels \u2013 Team USA\u2019s star skating trio composed of Amber Glenn, Alysa Liu, and Isabeau Levito. We particularly love Liu, who has featured endlessly in Instagram fan edits for her love of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/charli-xcx\">Charli xcx<\/a> and PinkPantheress \u2013 the latter even offered a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/reels\/DU1eOZgja6C\/\"><span>message of support<\/span><\/a><span> to the skating star ahead of her performances this year. The Winter Olympics briefly resembled a roller arena as the pair performed body pops and grooves to the electronic track, culminating in a flashy finish. Much like how Laufey has breathed new life into classical music and become one of the most-streamed artists in the world, Liu\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.olympics.com\/en\/milano-cortina-2026\/news\/alysa-liu-returns-on-her-own-terms-with-milano-cortina-approaching\"><span>refusal to conform<\/span><\/a><span> to some of figure skating\u2019s stricter traditions has led her to become a fan favourite.
