What do you want to do with your life?<\/em> Like so many 21-year-olds before her, that question is top of mind for Apple Martin.<\/p>\n

Martin\u2014the elder child of Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin\u2014has already built up an impressive fashion resume. In 2024, she tapped Alessandro Michele to outfit her in a custom sky-blue Valentino dress for Le Bal des D\u00e9butantes in Paris, and she has starred in campaigns for GapStudio and Self-Portrait. But Martin once dreamed of becoming a lawyer. \u201cI\u00a0was in that rebellious, \u2018I don\u2019t wanna be like my parents\u2019 type of phase,\u201d she tells Vogue<\/em> in an episode of Beauty Secrets<\/em>. Unlike most teenagers, acting out for Martin meant matriculating to Vanderbilt University, where she\u2019ll graduate with a degree in law, history, and society in May.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

For Martin, who grew up in the public eye\u2014the mere announcement of her name as a baby came with a rush of media attention\u2014leaving Los Angeles for Nashville allowed her to live life on her own terms. \u201cI\u2019m so grateful that I got to have a really normal experience,\u201d she says. Yes, this included the gnarly stuff, \u201clike, getting mold poisoning from your dorm\u201d\u2014but her time at Vanderbilt has mostly been defined by testing out \u201ca bunch of different vibes\u201d and making \u201cthe best friends in the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

That\u2019s not to say that Martin\u2019s creative heritage didn\u2019t follow her East; one day, she was cornered by a fellow student on campus. \u201cI hear that you\u2019re a secret theater kid,\u201d the young woman told her. Now she\u2019s directing a play at Vanderbilt. \u201c[I] love it more than anything.\u201d<\/p>\n

She likes singing, too, but don\u2019t expect her to drop an album anytime soon. \u201cI don\u2019t wanna be a singer,\u201d she says. \u201cI like musical theater, but getting onstage by yourself to sing is so terrifying.\u201d Instead, she\u2019s taking a cue from her mom. \u201cI\u00a0love dancing and I love acting,\u201d she says. \u201cMy\u00a0dream is to act.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Work isn\u2019t the only area where Martin looks up to Paltrow; she has also long considered her mother her sartorial North Star. \u201cMy mom\u2019s wardrobe from her 20s is just about my favorite thing in the entire world,\u201d Martin says. \u201cIt\u00a0makes me emotional thinking about the things in that closet.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Over winter break, Paltrow let Martin loose in there, \u201cas a little Grinch Christmas robbery,\u201d Martin jokes. During her dress-up session, she fell in love with a pair of \u201990s Saint Laurent bootcut trousers that went with her to Nashville.<\/p>\n

Other things remain off-limits. \u201cThat is not appropriate to bring to college<\/em>,\u201d Paltrow has told her daughter of certain pieces. Martin gets it. \u201cObviously it\u2019s fashion history and art, and God forbid anything ever happened to it.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Even the things that stayed behind get a little play every now and again, though. For the New York premiere of Marty Supreme<\/em> in December, Martin selected a sleek black Calvin Klein Collection tank dress that her mother had worn for the 1996 premiere of Emma<\/em>. While Martin admits that her first red carpet was \u201cthe\u00a0scariest thing in the entire world,\u201d she also declares, \u201cI\u2019ve\u00a0never felt more awesome in my life.\u201d We\u2019d hazard a guess there are many more to come.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
