During his final year in 2014, he even created his own car magazine from scratch u2013 which you can still read right here u2013 and achieved a 2:1 Batcheloru2019s Degree.nnnnJake then cut his teeth working for Dennis Publishingu2019s automotive titles Carbuyer and Auto Express for two years; time at the former taught him how to drive a website content system like he stole it, and the latter refined his news writing skills.nnnnAt CAR, itu2019s his job to know whatu2019s happening at all times in the automotive industry, react to breaking news stories and direct CARu2019s team as to how to approach news content both in print and online. He interviews industry executives to either get the scoop or help flesh out a story happening in the automotive world around us, attends press conferences and events to get the story from on the ground and investigates the latest technologies being developed for and by the car industry.nnnnJake writes mostly about new car reveals, wider industry stories and articles surrounding electric cars. versions<br \/>\u25ba It\u2019s 500kg heavier than the old RS4!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Audi Sport is redefining the term overkill with its new RS5. This new-generation model arrives with a stonking amount of power via an all-new, Audi Sport-first plug-in hybrid powertrain as well as a suitably aggressive look and a porky kerb weight.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s available as a saloon (which is actually a hatchback, confusingly) or Avant estate, and will be available in the summer of 2026.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">That is\u2026 a look<\/h2>\n<p>Yes, this new generation of RS5 is arguably one of the few remaining cars that will have come out of the brand\u2019s old way of design thinking \u2013 i.e.: <em>busy<\/em>. We\u2019ll still see a few more cars like this before the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.carmagazine.co.uk\/car-news\/first-official-pictures\/audi\/concept-c\/\">Concept C<\/a> arrives in production form and models that come after it, likely including the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.carmagazine.co.uk\/spy-shots\/audi\/q7\/\">next-generation Q7<\/a> and Q9 SUVs launching later in 2026.<\/p>\n<div class=\"mpu-inject hide-for-medium-up\">\n<div class=\"mpu-ad advert\"><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"mpu-inject show-for-medium-up hide-for-xlarge-up\">\n<div class=\"mpu-ad advert\"><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/car-images.bauersecure.com\/wp-images\/252845\/480x0\/audi-rs5-2026-21.jpg?scale=down\" alt class=\"wp-image-252848\" data-interchange=\"[https:\/\/car-images.bauersecure.com\/wp-images\/252845\/480x0\/audi-rs5-2026-21.jpg?scale=down, (default)], [https:\/\/car-images.bauersecure.com\/wp-images\/252845\/720x0\/audi-rs5-2026-21.jpg?scale=down, (medium)], [https:\/\/car-images.bauersecure.com\/wp-images\/252845\/1040x0\/audi-rs5-2026-21.jpg?scale=down, (large)]\"><\/figure>\n<\/p>\n<p>For this RS5 model, Audi Sport designers have really gone to town. Wolf Seebers, Audi Sport designer, tells us that it was  \u2018an absolute dream\u2019 to work on the RS5. Almost every panel has been modified or made bespoke, with Seebers pointing out that \u2018the only pieces we\u2019ve carried over from the base model A5 are the bonnet, roof and trunk.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>The aggressive stance is just one element, with the new and rather large grille taking centre stage up front and flanked by some almost race-spec canards flanking it. The track is wider front and rear by 40mm over a regular <a href=\"https:\/\/www.carmagazine.co.uk\/car-reviews\/audi\/a5-sportback\/\">A5<\/a>, with Audi Sport\u2019s classic blistered wheelarches accented with beefy 21-inch wheels. Those wheelarches include outlet vents that channel air out of the wheel wells\u2026 and will likely spew road muck up the side of the doors in no time in poor weather.<\/p>\n<div class=\"mpu-inject hide-for-medium-up\">\n<div class=\"mpu-ad advert\"><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/car-images.bauersecure.com\/wp-images\/252845\/480x0\/audi-rs5-2026-25.jpg?scale=down\" alt class=\"wp-image-252852\" data-interchange=\"[https:\/\/car-images.bauersecure.com\/wp-images\/252845\/480x0\/audi-rs5-2026-25.jpg?scale=down, (default)], [https:\/\/car-images.bauersecure.com\/wp-images\/252845\/720x0\/audi-rs5-2026-25.jpg?scale=down, (medium)], [https:\/\/car-images.bauersecure.com\/wp-images\/252845\/1040x0\/audi-rs5-2026-25.jpg?scale=down, (large)]\"><\/figure>\n<div class=\"mpu-inject show-for-medium-up hide-for-xlarge-up\">\n<div class=\"mpu-ad advert\"><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p>Not wild enough for you? That\u2019s before you get to the rear with its double-deck spoiler and two oval tailpipes so fat you can put your fist in them and not touch the sides. Checkered flag motifs can be seen in the daytime running lights, too, and if you want to add an extra bit of tackiness, there is the option to trim some of the sills and body panel elements in \u2018carbon camouflage\u2019 as seen on the green RS5 saloon.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Anything different inside?<\/h2>\n<p>Largely, the interior follows the same structure as that of a regular A5. That means a huge dashboard panel that incorporates the instrument cluster and central infotainment display potential for a passenger display and a lot of gloss black haptic switches. That said, roller wheels make their way onto the steering wheel for some UI simplicity.<\/p>\n<div class=\"mpu-inject hide-for-medium-up\">\n<div class=\"mpu-ad advert\"><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/car-images.bauersecure.com\/wp-images\/252845\/480x0\/audi-rs5-2026-29.jpg?scale=down\" alt class=\"wp-image-252856\" data-interchange=\"[https:\/\/car-images.bauersecure.com\/wp-images\/252845\/480x0\/audi-rs5-2026-29.jpg?scale=down, (default)], [https:\/\/car-images.bauersecure.com\/wp-images\/252845\/720x0\/audi-rs5-2026-29.jpg?scale=down, (medium)], [https:\/\/car-images.bauersecure.com\/wp-images\/252845\/1040x0\/audi-rs5-2026-29.jpg?scale=down, (large)]\"><\/figure>\n<\/p>\n<p>The RS5 carries forward the updated user interface that\u2019s being rolled out to cars like the A5, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.carmagazine.co.uk\/car-reviews\/audi\/q5-suv\/\">Q5<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.carmagazine.co.uk\/car-reviews\/audi\/q6-e-tron-suv\/\">Q6 e-Tron<\/a> with easier to read graphics and a simpler menu system. Pops of colour can be added in this RS model with red and green demonstrated in the two show cars you see pictured, and that \u2018carbon camouflage\u2019 can be had inside, too. <\/p>\n<div class=\"mpu-inject show-for-medium-up hide-for-xlarge-up\">\n<div class=\"mpu-ad advert\"><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>This model also benefits from bespoke performance seats as well as bespoke \u2018boost\u2019 and drive mode buttons on the steering wheel.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Give me some performance specs, please<\/h2>\n<p>Under the hyper-aggressive bodywork is Audi\u2019s Premium Platform Combustion architecture which has been engineered from the start to incorporate plug-in hybrid powertrains.<\/p>\n<div class=\"mpu-inject hide-for-medium-up\">\n<div class=\"mpu-ad advert\"><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/car-images.bauersecure.com\/wp-images\/252845\/480x0\/audi-rs5-2026-31.jpg?scale=down\" alt class=\"wp-image-252858\" data-interchange=\"[https:\/\/car-images.bauersecure.com\/wp-images\/252845\/480x0\/audi-rs5-2026-31.jpg?scale=down, (default)], [https:\/\/car-images.bauersecure.com\/wp-images\/252845\/720x0\/audi-rs5-2026-31.jpg?scale=down, (medium)], [https:\/\/car-images.bauersecure.com\/wp-images\/252845\/1040x0\/audi-rs5-2026-31.jpg?scale=down, (large)]\"><\/figure>\n<\/p>\n<p>For the RS5, the recipe starts off with a familiar element: a 2.9-litre twin-turbo V6. That bit is the same as the previous RS4, with engineers saying that around 60 per cent of the engine has been refined or improved via details like revised turbo geometry, new water-to-air intercoolers and a modified Miller combustion cycle.<\/p>\n<p>But this is Audi Sport\u2019s first-ever plug-in hybrid performance car, so there\u2019s naturally a lot of electrification at play. The 25.9kWh battery pack sits below the boot floor (but doesn\u2019t raise it like it does in an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.carmagazine.co.uk\/car-reviews\/mercedes-benz\/amg-c63-s-e-performance\/\">AMG C63<\/a>) and powers the 174bhp e-motor on the rear axle. Power is sent to all four wheels via an eight-speed transmission and a limited-slip differential that can split the power anywhere between 70\/30 to 15\/85 front to rear. All in, the RS5 is good for 630bhp and 590lb ft, good for a 3.6sec 0-62mph. That\u2019s more powerful than the outgoing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.carmagazine.co.uk\/car-reviews\/mercedes-benz\/amg-c63-s-e-performance\/\">RS6 Performance<\/a> \u2013 Audi Sport\u2019s supercar-destroying estate from the next class up.<\/p>\n<div class=\"mpu-inject hide-for-medium-up\">\n<div class=\"mpu-ad advert\"><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"mpu-inject show-for-medium-up hide-for-xlarge-up\">\n<div class=\"mpu-ad advert\"><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Audi is very proud of its new Dynamic Torque Control system, which Audi Sport managing director Rolf Michl says is the \u2018next generation\u2019 of the brand\u2019s perennial quattro all-wheel drive system. Audi calls it the \u2018invisible maestro\u2019 to the RS5\u2019s dynamics, which uses an eight-kilowatt electric motor that provides electromechanical torque vectoring to each of the rear wheels. The prime focus for the RS5 is ultimate traction in any scenario, with Michl telling us that the system \u2018uses electric power to shift up to 2000 newton metres of torque [1475lb ft, in theory] to each wheel, allowing for insane corner speeds. For me, this system really is the magical detail.\u2019<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/car-images.bauersecure.com\/wp-images\/252845\/480x0\/audi-rs5-2026-34.jpg?scale=down\" alt class=\"wp-image-252861\" data-interchange=\"[https:\/\/car-images.bauersecure.com\/wp-images\/252845\/480x0\/audi-rs5-2026-34.jpg?scale=down, (default)], [https:\/\/car-images.bauersecure.com\/wp-images\/252845\/720x0\/audi-rs5-2026-34.jpg?scale=down, (medium)], [https:\/\/car-images.bauersecure.com\/wp-images\/252845\/1040x0\/audi-rs5-2026-34.jpg?scale=down, (large)]\"><\/figure>\n<div class=\"mpu-inject hide-for-medium-up\">\n<div class=\"mpu-ad advert\"><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s all about grip, right up until you don\u2019t want it anymore. As well as a standard RS mode and an RS Individual setting where you can calibrate dynamics settings to how you like, there\u2019s also the RS Torque Rear mode that\u2019s been evolved from the one originally seen on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.carmagazine.co.uk\/car-reviews\/audi\/rs3\/\">RS3<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Torque Rear\u2019 is Audi code for a drift mode that warns you when you select it that it\u2019s for track use only, and there\u2019s even a graphic on the infotainment that can measure the angle of your slides, and it\u2019ll rank your best ones. It\u2019s wise, then, that the optional carbon ceramic brakes listed as a \u00a36k option in the UK is an option you tick.<\/p>\n<div class=\"mpu-inject show-for-medium-up hide-for-xlarge-up\">\n<div class=\"mpu-ad advert\"><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><em>Like this? Aren\u2019t we all collectively against that these days?<\/h2>\n<p>Well, sort of. Audi has a mountain to climb in terms of appealing to the performance car buyer with a plug-in hybrid, given BMW and Mercedes-AMG have done the same thing\u2026 and haven\u2019t come out well. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.carmagazine.co.uk\/car-reviews\/mercedes-benz\/amg-c63-s-e-performance\/\">AMG C63<\/a> has been largely vilified by its fanbase not only for its four-cylinder combustion engine but for its sometimes-synthetic drivetrain systems. BMW, with its ultra-heavyweight <a href=\"https:\/\/www.carmagazine.co.uk\/car-reviews\/bmw\/m5-g90-saloon\/\">M5<\/a>, may have made an impressive performance car but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.carmagazine.co.uk\/features\/opinion\/2025-worst-cars\/\">our experiences have proven<\/a> that it can feel too big and too complicated to live with as a daily driver.<\/p>\n<div class=\"mpu-inject hide-for-medium-up\">\n<div class=\"mpu-ad advert\"><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/car-images.bauersecure.com\/wp-images\/252845\/480x0\/audi-rs5-2026-37.jpg?scale=down\" alt class=\"wp-image-252864\" data-interchange=\"[https:\/\/car-images.bauersecure.com\/wp-images\/252845\/480x0\/audi-rs5-2026-37.jpg?scale=down, (default)], [https:\/\/car-images.bauersecure.com\/wp-images\/252845\/720x0\/audi-rs5-2026-37.jpg?scale=down, (medium)], [https:\/\/car-images.bauersecure.com\/wp-images\/252845\/1040x0\/audi-rs5-2026-37.jpg?scale=down, (large)]\"><\/figure>\n<\/p>\n<p>The thing is: Audi, like any manufacturer, needs to keep increasing its electrified mix of powertrains \u2013 particularly in Europe \u2013 but Michl acknowledges the uphill battle. \u2018Honestly, I\u2019d say the e-Tron GT is the best RS to ever exist when it comes to driveability,\u2019 says Michl. \u2018But we know that especially for our long-term RS customers \u2013\u00a0particularly RS4 and RS6 \u2013 you have to take them step by step. I think the PHEV concept is the perfect bridge where we can use its benefits in both a very emotional and practical way.\u2019<\/p>\n<div class=\"mpu-inject show-for-medium-up hide-for-xlarge-up\">\n<div class=\"mpu-ad advert\"><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">You\u2019ve teased me enough \u2013 how heavy are we talking?<\/h2>\n<div class=\"mpu-inject hide-for-medium-up\">\n<div class=\"mpu-ad advert\"><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Er, well \u2013 how does 2335kg for the saloon sound? Or 2370kg for the Avant. For reference, that\u2019s around 500kg more than the B9 RS4 \u2013 an almost unholy weight increase, particularly when the larger, V8-powered RS6 Performance is around 200kg lighter. Looking at rivals, an M3 is around 100kg under two tonnes depending on your spec, while an AMG C63 is around 2.1 tonnes. There\u2019s simply no getting around that extra bulk.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/car-images.bauersecure.com\/wp-images\/252845\/480x0\/audi-rs5-2026-40.jpg?scale=down\" alt class=\"wp-image-252867\" data-interchange=\"[https:\/\/car-images.bauersecure.com\/wp-images\/252845\/480x0\/audi-rs5-2026-40.jpg?scale=down, (default)], [https:\/\/car-images.bauersecure.com\/wp-images\/252845\/720x0\/audi-rs5-2026-40.jpg?scale=down, (medium)], [https:\/\/car-images.bauersecure.com\/wp-images\/252845\/1040x0\/audi-rs5-2026-40.jpg?scale=down, (large)]\"><\/figure>\n<\/p>\n<p>\u2018It is a lot heavier, yes,\u2019 Michl admits, but he assures us that \u2018you don\u2019t really feel it because it\u2019s so agile.\u2019 He points to electrification being a boon for making a car \u2013 regardless of weight \u2013 much more communicative on the road and much more adjustable when you\u2019re close to hitting the dynamic ceiling. \u2018The most important thing is for it to feel natural in every [drive] mode, especially if you\u2019re touching the limits,\u2019 he says. \u2018It gives you a clear response to how it acts and we wanted to have a mode where you could really feel the electric power.\u2019<\/p>\n<div class=\"mpu-inject hide-for-medium-up\">\n<div class=\"mpu-ad advert\"><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>UK models benefit from a standard, switchable sports exhaust and Michl is keen to point out the RS5 won\u2019t sound muted: \u2018If you want it to be a beast, it can be, but it has to fit in the world, too. And, honestly, our customers wouldn\u2019t tolerate it if offered them something artificial.\u2019<\/p>\n<div class=\"mpu-inject show-for-medium-up hide-for-xlarge-up\">\n<div class=\"mpu-ad advert\"><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Come on, then \u2013\u00a0how much?<\/h2>\n<p>Base pricing for the saloon is \u00a389,400 or \u00a391,300 for the Avant estate. There are three trims: a base one, Carbon Black adds \u00a36k and gives you some extra trimmings (mostly in black, obviously.
