The 26-year-old came out of the gates hot this winter after a 2025 season studded with setbacks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter today\u2019s crash, medical examinations confirmed that Maxim Van Gils has sustained a pelvic fracture. In the unwritten rules of bunch sprints, that\u2019s a strict <em>faux pas<\/em>. A leadout man typically veers to the side after their job is done so as not to obstruct their rivals\u2019 lines.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s the type of move that falls directly through the gaps in the UCI rulebook.<\/p>\n<div class=\"o-embed\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">I am so done with leadout riders purposely blocking other sprinters. (Photo: Getty Images)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>UCI commissaires didn\u2019t dish out any yellow cards after the finales of Ja\u00e9n or Almeria.<\/p>\n<p>The incidents could be deemed dubious applications of a system specifically designed to prevent such perilous scenarios.<\/p>\n<p>The yellow card system was introduced by the UCI at the start of 2025 to deter riders from actions that could endanger others. Team staff and members of the convoy are also subject to the sanction, which can result in temporary suspension.<\/p>\n<p>However, many within the peloton believe that enforcement of the new system is inconsistent and uneven.
