But among all the\u00a0<em>Inception<\/em> trailer-style\u00a0<em>bwooooars<\/em> and dramatic quick cuts to black,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/2MtgIoToa7I?si=psomv824PNtNh8Zn\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Star Wars: Galactic Racer\u00a0<\/em>showed off just enough gameplay<\/a> to get us thinking it\u2019s been too long since we martialled a futuristic pod over some exotic terrain.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Developed by Guilford-based Fuse Games who have some\u00a0<em>Need For Speed<\/em> and\u00a0<em>Burnout\u00a0<\/em>veterans among their ranks and carrying the biggest license in entertainment media, it\u2019s got a bit about it, this one. There are explosive takedowns reminiscent of the aforementioned\u00a0<em>Burnout\u00a0<\/em>games, a very expensive-looking photorealistic visual style, and an impressive variety of vehicles including hoverbikes, landspeeders, and contraptions that look like Anakin Skywalker would have raced against circa 1999.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"HtmlContent\" class=\"MarkUpWrapper-sc-t20i90-0 hQwWlJ\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Weirdly enough though, the new gameplay footage for that glossiest of blockbuster racers was met by an unexpected rival the very same day:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/store.steampowered.com\/app\/4236690\/Hypersonic_GP\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Hypersonic GP<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">It\u2019s an indie racer from Kyoto\u2019s Mi-Lan Studio, and it looks like all your old\u00a0<em>F Zero<\/em> and\u00a0<em>WipEout\u00a0<\/em>games crashed into each other and decided to just style it out as one, rather than untangle themselves.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"HtmlContent\" class=\"MarkUpWrapper-sc-t20i90-0 hQwWlJ\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\">What\u2019s most exciting about this one is how well it seems to get the sense of speed right, and the floatiness (if you\u2019ll excuse the formal academic language) of its spaceships. Just like\u00a0<em>Star Wars: Episode 1 Racer<\/em>, which last week\u2019s other big game conjures, the joy of controlling\u00a0<em>F Zero<\/em> and\u00a0<em>WipEout\u2019<\/em>s ships comes in that slight inertia and exaggerated weight transfer, and this game looks like it nails that.<\/p>\n<p>And now to snap you out of your late Nineties reverie and back to 2026 games industry stuff: there\u2019s no release date for either game.\u00a0<em>Star Wars: Galactic Racer<\/em> is coming to PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X\/S some time in 2026, and\u00a0<em>Hypersonic GP<\/em> comes to PC at, er, some point.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sony\u2019s February State of Play was, as ever, rammed full of glossy trailers that refused to tell you very much about the game they were advertising.
