Amazingly, the preceding day, nearly a foot of snow fell on the surrounding San Juan Mountains, then making way to bluebird Colorado skies. The stage was set for an adrenaline-packed weekend of skijoring in Silverton, free admission no less.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Related: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/snowbrains.com\/the-origins-of-skijoring-and-modern-competition-today\/\"><em><strong>The Origins of Skijoring and Modern Competition Today<\/strong><\/em><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>If you are not familiar with skijoring, you\u2019re not alone.<\/strong> This sport is far from new, but is still a niche sport. Photo Credit: JT Pulfer II<strong>Teams are divided into three categories depending on past skijoring experience.<\/strong> The \u201cNovice\u201d division welcomes teams that are new to the sport and may be taking their first pulls ever. The \u201cSport\u201d division comprises the majority of competitors, who are considered to have an intermediate skill level. These teams have seen competition before, but may not be on the level to enter the \u201cOpen\u201d division. Nearly 100 teams traveled from all over the Mountain West to participate in this action-packed event. Some teams traveled from as far away as Maine to compete for the $15,000 prize purse. With immense local support, the 17th annual Silverton Skijoring Competition went off without a hitch, and we\u2019re already looking forward to next year. Local sponsors include: Durango\/Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, SKA Brewing, Grand Imperial Hotel, Lacy Rose Saloon, Maisel Excavation, Peach Street Distillers, and Silverton Mountain.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000\">Overall Time Results<\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>Open Division<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000\">Dennis Alverson<\/span> riding \u201c<span style=\"color: #ff0000\">Jet Fuel Cowboy<\/span>\u201d pulling <span style=\"color: #ff0000\">Jim Ryan<\/span> was the winning combination for the Open division with a total time of <span style=\"color: #ff0000\">40.17<\/span> seconds.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>Sport Division<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000\">Phoebe Alverson<\/span> riding \u201c<span style=\"color: #ff0000\">Ozzie<\/span>\u201d pulling <span style=\"color: #ff0000\">Madison Ostergren<\/span> was the winning combination for the Sport division with a total time of <span style=\"color: #ff0000\">39.83<\/span> seconds.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>Novice Division<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000\">Shayden Valdez<\/span> riding \u201c<span style=\"color: #ff0000\">Dixie<\/span>\u201d pulling <span style=\"color: #ff0000\">Richard Weber<\/span> was the winning combination for the Novice division with a total time of <span style=\"color: #ff0000\">57.99<\/span> seconds.<\/p>\n<p><strong>If these pictures get you sstoked then you are a prime candidate to attend a skijoring event near you. <\/strong>Many circuits exist in Western states such as Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, and Colorado. New this year comes the first Professional Skijoring Series, aiming to bring the sport to a larger audience, while growing competition.
