Avalanches can still be easily triggered by skiers, snowboarders, and mountaineers \u2014 and they may involve very large volumes of snow.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The culprit is a potent combo:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Heavy snowfall since the evening of Tuesday, February 10<\/li>\n<li>Strong winds associated with Storm Niles<\/li>\n<li>Significant wind loading in exposed terrain<\/li>\n<li>Recent snow sitting on top of weak, buried layers that have persisted for weeks<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>That\u2019s a classic recipe for large slab avalanches. <\/strong>Even though the skies may clear and powder fever sets in, the snowpack hasn\u2019t had time to stabilize. marked and secured ski slopes.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Officials urge backcountry users to consult Avalanche Risk Estimation Bulletins via the M\u00e9t\u00e9o-France mountain page or mobile app and to check in locally with mountain professionals before heading out.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Rember: Level 4 doesn\u2019t mean \u201cimpossible.\u201d <\/strong>It means human-triggered avalanches are likely and natural avalanches remain possible.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Friday saw three skiers perish in Val d\u2019Is\u00e8re in the Savoie region, taking the death toll for the year to 22.<\/strong> The 10-year average annual for avalanche deaths lies at 21.6 for the hydrological year, putting this year on track to being an unfortunate record year, considering we are in mid-February still and
