a tradition as old as time. But while there\u2019s a whole world of perfectly fine and incredibly luxurious rooms available, doesn\u2019t it sometimes feel a bit clinical? There\u2019s something unsexy about the state of modern interiors. Thankfully, Baron Books is reissuing Kyoichi Tsuzuki\u2019s photo book <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baronbooks.co.uk\/product-page\/kyoichi-tsuzuki-love-notes\"><em>Love Hotels<\/em><\/a>, which offers a rich source of inspiration.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Originally published in 2001 in <em>Street Design File <\/em>vol.17, the series documents the maximalist design choices of Japanese love hotels, which have been slowly disappearing over time. It started when a few young editors from an architecture magazine asked Tsuzuki to collaborate on a project. After pitching the subject of love hotels, they ghosted him, prompting him to produce the idea himself.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cHigh-resolution digital cameras didn\u2019t exist back then, so I used a large format 4&#215;5 camera,\u201d Tusuzki recalls. \u201cI remember the struggles fondly now, like preparing huge black cloth curtains to deal with rooms where entire walls were mirrored, then sticking the lens through a hole cut in the centre to shoot.\u201d Without the convenience of Google imagery or social media to reference what these rooms looked like, Tsuzuki would \u201cendlessly walk around hotel districts, find rooms that looked interesting from the photo panels displayed at the entrance, and then negotiate with the hotel\u201d. He would repeat this process over and over.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThe Japanese somehow demonstrate world-class originality when it comes to eroticism,\u201d Tsuzuki suggests. \u201cFrom soaplands to image clubs and delivery health services, high-tech adult toys, manga, and adult magazines, there\u2019s a creative spirit that draws global attention \u2013 and the ultimate expression of erotic interior design lies in love hotels.\u201d While spaces dedicated to sex exist elsewhere in the world, there\u2019s something incredibly Japanese about the maximalist facilities that \u201cwildly deviate from their original purpose as places for brief sexual encounters\u201d \u2013 circular rotating beds, transparent bathtubs and swings with multiple uses. \u201cCraft perfectly fulfils the required function while art ventures into the realm of the unnecessary and meaningless &#8211; exceeding those requirements.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<figure class=\"inline-img expandable dev-view-hide\" data-img=\"fdfc40bf-460d-4fb8-96e2-b3f000aeffa1\" data-src=\"https:\/\/images-prod.dazeddigital.com\/2000\/azure\/dazed-prod\/1430\/7\/1437296.jpg\" data-img-aspect-ratio-type=\"landscape\" data-img-aspect-ratio=\"1.26\"><span class=\"has-css-custom-props image-container\" data-aspect-ratio-type=\"landscape\"><span class=\"preserve-aspect-ratio\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Love Hotels\" class=\"img\" height=\"1848\" src=\"https:\/\/images-prod.dazeddigital.com\/786\/azure\/dazed-prod\/1430\/7\/1437296.jpg\" width=\"2337\"><\/span><\/span><figcaption class=\"img-caption\"><span class=\"credit\">Courtesy of Kyoichi Tsuzuki and <span class=\"nowrap\">Baron Books<\/span><\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><span>\u201cI\u2019m often interviewed about Showa retro design,\u201d says Tsuzuki, reflecting on this kitsch aesthetic of Japanese design, which encompasses design styles from Art Deco and Modernism to the bubble era. \u201cShowa spans over 60 years, from 1926, before World War II, to 1989, but now what\u2019s considered most \u2018Showa-esque\u2019 is probably evoked by the image of the 1960s to 1980s.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cI was born in 1956, so I grew up squarely in that era, but for today\u2019s 20 and 30-somethings, \u2018Showa-esque\u2019 might be more of a fantasy image than a reality,\u201d he says. Guilty as charged. There\u2019s a burgeoning interest in alternative retro design choices among younger generations. You may have seen married couple Margaret and Corey Bienert explore Americana-themed hotel rooms on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/aprettycoolhoteltour\/?hl=en\">Pretty Cool Hotel Tour<\/a> Instagram account, and use this research to design their own home. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@merchmotel?lang=en\">Merch Motel<\/a> actively designs merchandise based on kitsch signage and retro architecture; their vintage-inspired clown <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DQj7CVNj6Ez\/?hl=en\">embroidered cap<\/a> recently featured in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/rachel-sennott\">Rachel Sennott<\/a>\u2019s <em>I Love LA<\/em>. Both of these are American examples, but Japan was the true originator. \u201cRetro-designed love hotels seem to be chosen more often by young people seeking Instagram-worthy rooms than by older patrons,&#8221; says Tsuzuki.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Despite this renewed interest, these playful rooms are rapidly disappearing, with nearly 100 love hotels closing down each year. \u201cIt\u2019s fair to say they face extinction,\u201d Tsuzuki acknowledges. Rather than a preference for minimalist aesthetics, their decline has far more to do with legislation, as is the case with most sex-related industries. \u201cThe primary culprit is the enforcement of the New Adult Entertainment Business Law,\u201d Tsuzuki. \u00a0Under this law, love hotels are classified as a form of adult entertainment, rather than hospitality, on the basis that lodging is not their primary purpose.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<figure class=\"inline-img expandable dev-view-hide\" data-img=\"c71ecc83-3ff7-48a5-ae85-b3f000af2780\" data-src=\"https:\/\/images-prod.dazeddigital.com\/2000\/azure\/dazed-prod\/1430\/7\/1437302.jpg\" data-img-aspect-ratio-type=\"landscape\" data-img-aspect-ratio=\"1.25\"><span class=\"has-css-custom-props image-container\" data-aspect-ratio-type=\"landscape\"><span class=\"preserve-aspect-ratio\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Love Hotels\" class=\"img\" height=\"1890\" src=\"https:\/\/images-prod.dazeddigital.com\/786\/azure\/dazed-prod\/1430\/7\/1437302.jpg\" width=\"2362\"><\/span><\/span><figcaption class=\"img-caption\"><span class=\"credit\">Courtesy of Kyoichi Tsuzuki and <span class=\"nowrap\">Baron Books<\/span><\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><span>\u201cBeing classified as an adult entertainment business means they can only operate in designated zones permitted for such businesses,\u201d Tsuzuki explains. Regrettably, this leaves some businesses with no choice but to change their name or entirely remodel into a generic city hotel. Perhaps the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/datablog\/2025\/nov\/28\/gen-z-sex-dating-relationships\">Gen Z sex recession<\/a> is due to the declining rate of vibes. \u201cAkin to tracking nearly extinct animals, I began photographing love hotels which still feature old-fashioned interiors,\u201d he explains. Reiterating the importance of documenting these spaces, Tsuzuki convinced the owners to let him preserve their designs. \u201cEvery hotel responded more favourably than I could have imagined; the owners\u2019 love for the interiors, and their sense of regret were extraordinary.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>There are still around 5,000 love hotels in service, mostly in the Tokyo districts of Shinjuku, Shibuya, Ueno, and Kinshicho, or dotted around suburban highways generally only accessible via car. \u201cWalking through the love hotel districts of major cities and choosing one based on the photo panels at the entrance remains the most convenient and enjoyable way to experience them,\u201d Tsuzuki suggests.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Though many of the hotels featured in the book have already reached their demise or undergone a normie makeover, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hotelfuki.jp\/\">Hotel Fuki<\/a> in Osaka largely remains the same. Tsuzuki recommends the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/hotel_sara_group\">SARA Group<\/a>, which operates from various Tokyo locations, for a new style of love hotel where each room is designed with a different theme. But while there\u2019s a whole world of perfectly fine and incredibly luxurious rooms available, doesn\u2019t it sometimes feel a bit clinical? There\u2019s something unsexy about the state of modern interiors. Thankfully, Baron Books is reissuing Kyoichi Tsuzuki\u2019s photo book <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baronbooks.co.uk\/product-page\/kyoichi-tsuzuki-love-notes\"><em>Love Hotels<\/em><\/a>, which offers a rich source of inspiration.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Originally published in 2001 in <em>Street Design File <\/em>vol.17, the series documents the maximalist design choices of Japanese love hotels, which have been slowly disappearing over time. It started when a few young editors from an architecture magazine asked Tsuzuki to collaborate on a project. After pitching the subject of love hotels, they ghosted him, prompting him to produce the idea himself.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cHigh-resolution digital cameras didn\u2019t exist back then, so I used a large format 4&#215;5 camera,\u201d Tusuzki recalls. \u201cI remember the struggles fondly now, like preparing huge black cloth curtains to deal with rooms where entire walls were mirrored, then sticking the lens through a hole cut in the centre to shoot.\u201d Without the convenience of Google imagery or social media to reference what these rooms looked like, Tsuzuki would \u201cendlessly walk around hotel districts, find rooms that looked interesting from the photo panels displayed at the entrance, and then negotiate with the hotel\u201d. He would repeat this process over and over.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThe Japanese somehow demonstrate world-class originality when it comes to eroticism,\u201d Tsuzuki suggests. \u201cFrom soaplands to image clubs and delivery health services, high-tech adult toys, manga, and adult magazines, there\u2019s a creative spirit that draws global attention \u2013 and the ultimate expression of erotic interior design lies in love hotels.\u201d While spaces dedicated to sex exist elsewhere in the world, there\u2019s something incredibly Japanese about the maximalist facilities that \u201cwildly deviate from their original purpose as places for brief sexual encounters\u201d \u2013 circular rotating beds, transparent bathtubs and swings with multiple uses. \u201cCraft perfectly fulfils the required function while art ventures into the realm of the unnecessary and meaningless &#8211; exceeding those requirements.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<figure class=\"inline-img expandable dev-view-hide\" data-img=\"fdfc40bf-460d-4fb8-96e2-b3f000aeffa1\" data-src=\"https:\/\/images-prod.dazeddigital.com\/2000\/azure\/dazed-prod\/1430\/7\/1437296.jpg\" data-img-aspect-ratio-type=\"landscape\" data-img-aspect-ratio=\"1.26\"><span class=\"has-css-custom-props image-container\" data-aspect-ratio-type=\"landscape\"><span class=\"preserve-aspect-ratio\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Love Hotels\" class=\"img\" height=\"1848\" src=\"https:\/\/images-prod.dazeddigital.com\/786\/azure\/dazed-prod\/1430\/7\/1437296.jpg\" width=\"2337\"><\/span><\/span><figcaption class=\"img-caption\"><span class=\"credit\">Courtesy of Kyoichi Tsuzuki and <span class=\"nowrap\">Baron Books<\/span><\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><span>\u201cI\u2019m often interviewed about Showa retro design,\u201d says Tsuzuki, reflecting on this kitsch aesthetic of Japanese design, which encompasses design styles from Art Deco and Modernism to the bubble era. \u201cShowa spans over 60 years, from 1926, before World War II, to 1989, but now what\u2019s considered most \u2018Showa-esque\u2019 is probably evoked by the image of the 1960s to 1980s.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cI was born in 1956, so I grew up squarely in that era, but for today\u2019s 20 and 30-somethings, \u2018Showa-esque\u2019 might be more of a fantasy image than a reality,\u201d he says. Guilty as charged. There\u2019s a burgeoning interest in alternative retro design choices among younger generations. You may have seen married couple Margaret and Corey Bienert explore Americana-themed hotel rooms on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/aprettycoolhoteltour\/?hl=en\">Pretty Cool Hotel Tour<\/a> Instagram account, and use this research to design their own home. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@merchmotel?lang=en\">Merch Motel<\/a> actively designs merchandise based on kitsch signage and retro architecture; their vintage-inspired clown <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DQj7CVNj6Ez\/?hl=en\">embroidered cap<\/a> recently featured in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/rachel-sennott\">Rachel Sennott<\/a>\u2019s <em>I Love LA<\/em>. Both of these are American examples, but Japan was the true originator. \u201cRetro-designed love hotels seem to be chosen more often by young people seeking Instagram-worthy rooms than by older patrons,&#8221; says Tsuzuki.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Despite this renewed interest, these playful rooms are rapidly disappearing, with nearly 100 love hotels closing down each year. \u201cIt\u2019s fair to say they face extinction,\u201d Tsuzuki acknowledges. Regrettably, this leaves some businesses with no choice but to change their name or entirely remodel into a generic city hotel. Perhaps the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/datablog\/2025\/nov\/28\/gen-z-sex-dating-relationships\">Gen Z sex recession<\/a> is due to the declining rate of vibes. \u201cAkin to tracking nearly extinct animals, I began photographing love hotels which still feature old-fashioned interiors,\u201d he explains. Reiterating the importance of documenting these spaces, Tsuzuki convinced the owners to let him preserve their designs. \u201cEvery hotel responded more favourably than I could have imagined; the owners\u2019 love for the interiors, and their sense of regret were extraordinary.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>There are still around 5,000 love hotels in service, mostly in the Tokyo districts of Shinjuku, Shibuya, Ueno, and Kinshicho, or dotted around suburban highways generally only accessible via car. \u201cWalking through the love hotel districts of major cities and choosing one based on the photo panels at the entrance remains the most convenient and enjoyable way to experience them,\u201d Tsuzuki suggests.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Though many of the hotels featured in the book have already reached their demise or undergone a normie makeover, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hotelfuki.jp\/\">Hotel Fuki<\/a> in Osaka largely remains the same. Tsuzuki recommends the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/hotel_sara_group\">SARA Group<\/a>, which operates from various Tokyo locations, for a new style of love hotel where each room is designed with a different theme.
