Green Day kicked off Super Bowl LX festivities tonight (February 8) at Levi\u2019s Stadium in Santa Clara, California, where the Bay Area natives played a medley of hits from their 2004 album, American Idiot<\/em>. Watch Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt, and Tr\u00e9 Cool\u2019s performance here.<\/p>\n

To tease the set, the NFL brought out a string quartet to perform the band\u2019s sentimental \u201cGood Riddance (Time of Your Life)\u201d as Tom Brady, Peyton and Eli Manning, Jalen Hurts, and other past MVPs walked onto the field. The camera then panned to Green Day, who launched into \u201cHoliday\u201d in front of a crowd of cheering fans waving flags, signs, and foam hands shaped like the American Idiot<\/em> grenade hearts.<\/p>\n

In their usual all-black attire, Green Day moved swiftly into \u201cBoulevard of Broken Dreams\u201d and then \u201cAmerican Idiot.\u201d Joining the trio onstage were their longtime touring bandmates, including Pinhead Gunpowder guitarist Jason White. For those who bet the outspoken punks would use their platform to critique the Trump administration, as they often do, sorry; Billie Joe Armstrong skipped over the second verse of \u201cAmerican Idiot\u201d\u2014where he now sings \u201cI’m not a part of the MAGA agenda\u201d\u2014and axed the faux-representative announcement of \u201cHoliday.\u201d<\/p>\n

But Armstrong didn\u2019t bite his tongue two days before the Super Bowl. During a performance at a Spotify-sponsored Super Bowl party, the singer called for ICE agents to quit, claiming that the current administration will \u201cdrop\u201d them as soon as Trump\u2019s presidential term ends.<\/p>\n

This year\u2019s Super Bowl pregame performers also included Charlie Puth, Brandi Carlile, and Coco Jones. Puth had the honor of singing \u201cThe Star-Spangled Banner,\u201d Carlile performed \u201cAmerica the Beautiful\u201d on acoustic guitar, and Jones sang \u201cLift Every Voice and Sing.\u201d Later in the evening, Bad Bunny played the official Super Bowl halftime show.<\/p>\n
