Hayes<\/a>\u2019 abstract ceramic sculptures may be interpreted as poetic vessels, even though they lack traditional openings. While we easily associate clay pots and round woven forms with ideas related to storage, protection, and even spiritual significance, they also nod to the human head as a holder\u2014a kind of receptacle for culture, language, personal expression, and dreams.<\/p>\n<p>For the past several years, Hayes has approached porcelain with an emphasis on mostly monochrome black forms with meticulously hand-marked surfaces with textures that appear almost strand-like. Recently, he\u2019s begun incorporating colored porcelain into the bulbous forms, inspired by African textiles like <a href=\"https:\/\/lammuseum.wfu.edu\/2023\/02\/ghana-weave-a-kente-cloth\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">kente cloth<\/a> and a kind of hat called <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.slam.org\/collection\/objects\/44988\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ashetu<\/a>, <\/em>or prestige hats, worn by high-status Bamileke people of Cameroon. \u201cThe head is more than the center of the brain and thought; it is the place where the soul lives and must be protected,\u201d the artist says.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thisiscolossal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/hayes-5.jpeg\" class=\"swipebox\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-469491\" title=\"\u201cEmbolden\u201d (2025), colored porcelain, 7 x 9 x 9 inches\" data-rl_title=\"\u201cEmbolden\u201d (2025), colored porcelain, 7 x 9 x 9 inches\" data-rl_caption=\"\u201cEmbolden\u201d (2025), colored porcelain, 7 x 9 x 9 inches\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1832\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thisiscolossal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/hayes-5.jpeg\" alt=\"An abstract, textured ceramic sculpture by Dont\u00e9 K. Hayes\" class=\"wp-image-469496\"><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">\u201cEmbolden\u201d (2025), colored porcelain, 7 x 9 x 9 inches<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In addition to Indigenous adornment traditions of Western and Central Africa, Hayes often references his interest in hip-hop culture. \u201cSweater,\u201d for example, nods to the late rap star Biggie Smalls\u2014a.k.a. The Notorious B.I.G.\u2014and his penchant for wearing colorful knits, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/coogi.com\/blogs\/news\/one-memorable-look-biggiie-smalls-coogi-sweaters\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">COOGI<\/a>, a brand hugely popular in the 1980s and 1990s.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to other vibrant new works, this piece \u201cspeaks to the African Diaspora\u2019s freedom to be bold, unapologetic, and fully at ease in their own skin,\u201d Hayes says. \u201cThrough experimenting with colored porcelain and by combining porcelain with mason stains to create distinct colored tones, like a DJ, I remix inherited materials into new forms, challenging ceramic hierarchies and cultural assumptions tied to color.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hayes\u2019 motifs and forms draw from an array of sources, such as pottery made in <a href=\"https:\/\/exhibitions.psu.edu\/s\/african-brilliance\/page\/catalogue-13\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ghana and Burkina Faso<\/a>, which often have ceremonial purposes. \u201cGarner\u201d takes these often bulbous, heavily textured vessels as a starting point, which Hayes also considers within the context of everyday use and popular culture.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn \u2018Garner,\u2019 these traditional pottery forms visually evoked for me both bubble wrap\u2014a material designed to safeguard fragile objects\u2014and the Daleks from <em>Doctor Who<\/em>, a protagonist authoritarian race who destroy and exterminate other worlds and cultures through time and space,\u201d Hayes says. \u201cBy merging these divergent ideas, I create a \u2018future artifact\u2019\u2014a work that preserves ancestral knowledge and reclaims what was lost or erased due to the historic Atlantic slave trade and systemic racism, while also opening new possibilities for healing, care, and empowerment in the present and future.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thisiscolossal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/hayes-6.jpeg\" class=\"swipebox\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-469491\" title=\"\u201cGarner\u201d (2025), ceramic, 13 x 16 x 16 inches\" data-rl_title=\"\u201cGarner\u201d (2025), ceramic, 13 x 16 x 16 inches\" data-rl_caption=\"\u201cGarner\u201d (2025), ceramic, 13 x 16 x 16 inches\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1736\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thisiscolossal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/hayes-6.jpeg\" alt=\"An abstract, textured ceramic sculpture by Dont\u00e9 K. Hayes\" class=\"wp-image-469497\"><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">\u201cGarner\u201d (2025), ceramic, 13 x 16 x 16 inches<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Hayes currently has work on view through February 18 in <em>Ancestral Objects: Holders of Memory, Space and Time<\/em> at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/downtown.utk.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">UT Downtown Gallery<\/a>. Forthcoming exhibitions this spring include his solo show, <em>Ancestral Tomorrows<\/em>, at the <a href=\"https:\/\/art.ua.edu\/venue-sarah-moody-gallery-of-art\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sarah Moody Galley of Art<\/a> at the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa, plus inclusion in the group exhibition <em>Remix to Motown 45: Side A, Side B<\/em> at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecarrcenter.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Carr Center<\/a> in Detroit. Another solo show, <em>Ancestral Remix <\/em>at <a href=\"https:\/\/peteranthonyfineart.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Peter Anthony Fine Art<\/a>\u00a0in Charleston, opens in April.
