class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Rosal\u00eda<\/span><\/span>\u2019s <em data-start=\"214\" data-end=\"219\">Lux<\/em> topped end-of-year lists worldwide, while Madrid\u2019s Rusowsky showed with the blockbuster <em data-start=\"308\" data-end=\"315\">Daisy<\/em> that Spanish artists could go global without forcing an American accent. And further afield, Puerto Rican star <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/bad-bunny\"><span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Bad Bunny<\/span><\/span><\/a> finally received long-overdue critical recognition for reggaet\u00f3n with <em data-start=\"535\" data-end=\"541\">DtMF<\/em>. \u201cSomething very special is happening right now,\u201d says 23-year-old Andalusian singer Judeline. \u201cI feel like the world is looking at Spain. Rosal\u00eda was the one who opened the door for all of us \u2014 the new generation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span>In many ways, Judeline is where Spanish music\u2019s past meets its future. On her 2025 EP <\/span><em><span>Verano Saudade <\/span><\/em><span>(\u2018<\/span><em><span>Summer Saudade<\/span><\/em><span>\u2019), for example, the artist\u2019s lyrics are deeply indebted to the traditions of flamenco, but her influences are vast: spanning acid-laced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/sega-bodega\">Sega Bodega<\/a> production and globetrotting features from Ghanaian-British rapper Pa Salieu and Brazilian funk star MC Morena. It\u2019s a unique sonic intersection, simultaneously introducing Spain to the world and the world to Spain, but it\u2019s also the kind of hybridisation that comes naturally to someone of Judeline\u2019s generation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThat\u2019s just my life,\u201d she explains. \u201cI come from a very traditional little village called Ca\u00f1os de Meco in Andalusia and then I saw all these crazy things happening in the world on the internet. I discovered Travis Scott, Kodak Black, and a lot of artists that no one was talking about in my village through the internet.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<figure class=\"inline-img expandable dev-view-hide\" data-img=\"082fe49c-edea-4aad-8255-b3e800dbbe31\" data-src=\"https:\/\/images-prod.dazeddigital.com\/2000\/azure\/dazed-prod\/1430\/6\/1436481.jpg\" data-img-aspect-ratio-type=\"landscape\" data-img-aspect-ratio=\"1.25\"><span class=\"has-css-custom-props image-container\" data-aspect-ratio-type=\"landscape\"><span class=\"preserve-aspect-ratio\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Judeline_Retouched_Sent_8\" class=\"img\" height=\"2400\" src=\"https:\/\/images-prod.dazeddigital.com\/786\/azure\/dazed-prod\/1430\/6\/1436481.jpg\" width=\"3000\"><\/span><\/span><figcaption class=\"img-caption\"><span class=\"credit\">Photography Andrea Urbez<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><span>In fact, Judeline claims that the internet saved her life. \u201cI was a bit of an otaku when I was a teenager, I liked anime, I liked punk rock and my hair was always different colours,\u201d she says. \u201cPeople in my town would look at me like I was the weird kid, so I spent every single day on the internet, searching for things and chatting to people. It was my way of socialising. It was only when I moved to Madrid at 17 that I felt like I could dress however and do whatever I wanted.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>This rich inner world manifested in particular on Judeline\u2019s 2024 Interscope-supported debut, <\/span><em><span>Bodhiria<\/span><\/em><span>, which, following a string of Latin music crossovers with Puerto Rican producer Tainy and Argentinian rapper Duki, first landed Judeline at the helm of Spain\u2019s new generation. Its title was coined by Judeline to evoke a fantastical setting reflected in the project\u2019s distinctly delicate soundscapes: reggaeton percussion, flamenco <\/span><em><span>palmas <\/span><\/em><span>(hand claps) and pinkwashed electronic synthesisers, all tied together by ethereal vocals from Judeline and her seraphic alter-ego, Angel-a. The project marked her first entry into the Spanish charts.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>But, more than anything, Judeline wants to represent Andalusia, the often-marginalised home of flamenco and Spain\u2019s <\/span><em><span>gitano <\/span><\/em><span>(\u2018traveller\u2019) communities. \u201cOften, when people think they\u2019re seeing Spanish culture, it\u2019s actually Andalusian culture,\u201d she explains, leaning slightly further into the clipped southern Spanish accent that she\u2019s protected fiercely since moving to Madrid. \u201c[People from other regions] take our culture but they don\u2019t treat us well. We\u2019re poor, we have no work and a lot of negative stereotypes.\u201d These aren\u2019t necessarily distinctions that people outside of Spain would be familiar with, but education about these issues is one of the many benefits associated with Spanish music\u2019s entry onto the global stage over the past year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Below, rising star Judeline breaks down the origin of her name, her favourite anime, and the meaning behind recent EP <\/span><em><span>Verano Saudade<\/span><\/em><span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Where did you get your name from?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Judeline:<\/strong><span> My dad really liked the Beatles. He was going to name me Jude if I were a boy. Still, I always loved that name. My dad\u2019s also a musician. He makes beautiful music. He taught me how to play guitar and always made sure he was playing good music in the house.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Did you grow up listening to Spanish music?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Judeline: <\/strong><span>Yes, I was always interested in Spanish lyrics. Singers like Silvio Rodr\u00edguez who play guitar and have deep lyrics. My dad loved the Beatles, but my mum loved flamenco. You know, flamenco lyrics are very deep and beautiful. Then, my brother listened to rap and dancehall, so I had this huge mix in my house.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"src-youtube video-container embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"media-youtube\" data-id=\"SuGOPtPsyvc\"><span class=\"preserve-aspect-ratio\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" allowfullscreen frameborder height=\"422\" scrolling=\"no\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/SuGOPtPsyvc\" webkitallowfullscreen width=\"750\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><strong>You mentioned you were into anime. What series did you watch?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Judeline: <\/strong><span>I saw <\/span><em><span>Spirited Away<\/span><\/em><span> when I was very little and loved it. The different way that [anime] tells stories, it was so special to me. They don\u2019t really have bad characters, like the villains are inside of people. I became a little bit addicted. I saw <\/span><em><span>Death Note<\/span><\/em><span>, and then my favourites were <\/span><em><span>Made in Abyss <\/span><\/em><span>and <\/span><em><span>Anohana<\/span><\/em><span>. The end of <\/span><em><span>Made in Abyss <\/span><\/em><span>is a little bit fucked up, but the beginning is so, so beautiful.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>I\u2019m curious about the title of <\/strong><strong><em>Verano Saudade<\/em><\/strong><strong>. \u2018Saudade\u2019 is a Portuguese term loosely meaning \u2018longing\u2019, right?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Judeline: <\/strong><span>I\u2019ve always felt a very strong connection with Brazilian music, and the Portuguese language is so beautiful and romantic to me; it\u2019s a little bit similar to Spanish. I spent a little vacation in the summer in Brazil, and I had this very romantic trip, honestly. I felt very young, and the views in the summer were so beautiful. The whole concept of an endless summer came to my mind. Also, the sounds \u2013 I have some bossa nova and a collab with a Brazilian MC on there.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span>I think my summers sounded like <em>Verano Saudade<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>What was summer like for you growing up?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Judeline: <\/strong><span>My village was very touristy, so it was full in summer and empty in winter. Because of that, my parents would rent my house, and we would go to an even lonelier place in summer. We\u2019d spend the summer in the mountains, and would also go to the beach a lot. I was literally so obsessed with the sea. My mom would have to come to the water to put some sunscreen on me, because I would not leave! Then, from 16 to 21, I spent the best summers of my life with friends, sleeping on the beach and swimming in the morning.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>My feelings of summer are very specific, because I really enjoyed it, but we also had to leave to go the mountain, and it was kind of lonely. I think my summers sounded like <\/span><em><span>Verano Saudade<\/span><\/em><span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>What\u2019s next for Judeline?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Judeline: <\/strong><span>I have my first arena tour in Spain. It\u2019s a really important thing for me, so I\u2019m preparing everything. It\u2019s a rush, but I\u2019m happy. And further afield, Puerto Rican star <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/bad-bunny\"><span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Bad Bunny<\/span><\/span><\/a> finally received long-overdue critical recognition for reggaet\u00f3n with <em data-start=\"535\" data-end=\"541\">DtMF<\/em>. \u201cSomething very special is happening right now,\u201d says 23-year-old Andalusian singer Judeline. \u201cI feel like the world is looking at Spain. Rosal\u00eda was the one who opened the door for all of us \u2014 the new generation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span>In many ways, Judeline is where Spanish music\u2019s past meets its future. On her 2025 EP <\/span><em><span>Verano Saudade <\/span><\/em><span>(\u2018<\/span><em><span>Summer Saudade<\/span><\/em><span>\u2019), for example, the artist\u2019s lyrics are deeply indebted to the traditions of flamenco, but her influences are vast: spanning acid-laced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/sega-bodega\">Sega Bodega<\/a> production and globetrotting features from Ghanaian-British rapper Pa Salieu and Brazilian funk star MC Morena. It\u2019s a unique sonic intersection, simultaneously introducing Spain to the world and the world to Spain, but it\u2019s also the kind of hybridisation that comes naturally to someone of Judeline\u2019s generation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThat\u2019s just my life,\u201d she explains. \u201cI come from a very traditional little village called Ca\u00f1os de Meco in Andalusia and then I saw all these crazy things happening in the world on the internet. It was my way of socialising. It was only when I moved to Madrid at 17 that I felt like I could dress however and do whatever I wanted.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>This rich inner world manifested in particular on Judeline\u2019s 2024 Interscope-supported debut, <\/span><em><span>Bodhiria<\/span><\/em><span>, which, following a string of Latin music crossovers with Puerto Rican producer Tainy and Argentinian rapper Duki, first landed Judeline at the helm of Spain\u2019s new generation. Its title was coined by Judeline to evoke a fantastical setting reflected in the project\u2019s distinctly delicate soundscapes: reggaeton percussion, flamenco <\/span><em><span>palmas <\/span><\/em><span>(hand claps) and pinkwashed electronic synthesisers, all tied together by ethereal vocals from Judeline and her seraphic alter-ego, Angel-a. The project marked her first entry into the Spanish charts.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>But, more than anything, Judeline wants to represent Andalusia, the often-marginalised home of flamenco and Spain\u2019s <\/span><em><span>gitano <\/span><\/em><span>(\u2018traveller\u2019) communities. \u201cOften, when people think they\u2019re seeing Spanish culture, it\u2019s actually Andalusian culture,\u201d she explains, leaning slightly further into the clipped southern Spanish accent that she\u2019s protected fiercely since moving to Madrid. \u201c[People from other regions] take our culture but they don\u2019t treat us well. We\u2019re poor, we have no work and a lot of negative stereotypes.\u201d These aren\u2019t necessarily distinctions that people outside of Spain would be familiar with, but education about these issues is one of the many benefits associated with Spanish music\u2019s entry onto the global stage over the past year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Below, rising star Judeline breaks down the origin of her name, her favourite anime, and the meaning behind recent EP <\/span><em><span>Verano Saudade<\/span><\/em><span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Where did you get your name from?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Judeline:<\/strong><span> My dad really liked the Beatles. He was going to name me Jude if I were a boy. Still, I always loved that name. My dad\u2019s also a musician. He makes beautiful music. He taught me how to play guitar and always made sure he was playing good music in the house.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Did you grow up listening to Spanish music?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Judeline: <\/strong><span>Yes, I was always interested in Spanish lyrics. Singers like Silvio Rodr\u00edguez who play guitar and have deep lyrics. My dad loved the Beatles, but my mum loved flamenco. You know, flamenco lyrics are very deep and beautiful. What series did you watch?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Judeline: <\/strong><span>I saw <\/span><em><span>Spirited Away<\/span><\/em><span> when I was very little and loved it. The different way that [anime] tells stories, it was so special to me. They don\u2019t really have bad characters, like the villains are inside of people. I became a little bit addicted. I saw <\/span><em><span>Death Note<\/span><\/em><span>, and then my favourites were <\/span><em><span>Made in Abyss <\/span><\/em><span>and <\/span><em><span>Anohana<\/span><\/em><span>. The end of <\/span><em><span>Made in Abyss <\/span><\/em><span>is a little bit fucked up, but the beginning is so, so beautiful.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>I\u2019m curious about the title of <\/strong><strong><em>Verano Saudade<\/em><\/strong><strong>. \u2018Saudade\u2019 is a Portuguese term loosely meaning \u2018longing\u2019, right?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Judeline: <\/strong><span>I\u2019ve always felt a very strong connection with Brazilian music, and the Portuguese language is so beautiful and romantic to me; it\u2019s a little bit similar to Spanish. I spent a little vacation in the summer in Brazil, and I had this very romantic trip, honestly. I felt very young, and the views in the summer were so beautiful. The whole concept of an endless summer came to my mind. Also, the sounds \u2013 I have some bossa nova and a collab with a Brazilian MC on there.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span>I think my summers sounded like <em>Verano Saudade<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>What was summer like for you growing up?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Judeline: <\/strong><span>My village was very touristy, so it was full in summer and empty in winter. Because of that, my parents would rent my house, and we would go to an even lonelier place in summer. We\u2019d spend the summer in the mountains, and would also go to the beach a lot. I was literally so obsessed with the sea. My mom would have to come to the water to put some sunscreen on me, because I would not leave! Then, from 16 to 21, I spent the best summers of my life with friends, sleeping on the beach and swimming in the morning.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>My feelings of summer are very specific, because I really enjoyed it, but we also had to leave to go the mountain, and it was kind of lonely.
