Innocuous winter sicknesses and niggles just wouldn\u2019t quit.<\/p>\n<p>If there\u2019s ever been an argument for keeping riders cocooned on indoor trainers rather than sending them to altitude camps and tune-up races, it\u2019s the opening of 2026.<\/p>\n<p>Jonas Vingegaard, Mads Pedersen, Wout van Aert, Olav Kooij, and Tim Merlier are among those filling out an alarmingly busy February infirmary.<\/p>\n<p>And their falls, fractures, and foul health could impact the whole season going forward.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s what\u2019s happened to who, and what it might mean:<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad-placeholder-wrapper relative w-full border-t border-b border-border-light col-span-full my-3 md:col-span-10 md:col-start-2\">\n<div class=\"mb-[30px] min-h-[30px] text-center\"><span class=\"font-utility-4 font-medium tracking-[1px] text-neutral-500 uppercase\">ADVERTISEMENT<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Mads Pedersen (Lidl-Trek)<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_976581\" class=\"pom-image-wrap photo-alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Pedersen and Van Aert are two of the few riders close to beating Pogacar and Van der Poel in the classics.\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-976581 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/velo-cdn.outsideonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/GettyImages-2259847507.jpg?width=2048&amp;auto=webp&amp;quality=75&amp;fit=cover\"><figcaption class=\"pom-caption\"><span class=\"article__caption\">Mads Pedersen crashed out of his season debut at the Valenciana tour in Spain. <\/span> (Photo: Szymon Gruchalski\/Getty Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>What happened?<\/strong> Broke wrist and collarbone in a crash during stage 1 of Volta Comunitat Valenciana.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Prognosis:<\/strong> Pedersen is back on the bike and pedaling on the trainer with his plastered wrist resting on some boxes. But his recovery timelines and racing schedule remain unknown.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Impact:<\/strong> It\u2019s a heartbreaker.<\/p>\n<p>Pedersen \u2013 the one rider who threatened Tadej Poga\u010dar and Mathieu van der Poel last year on the cobbles \u2013 is off the back before spring has even started.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad-placeholder-wrapper relative w-full border-t border-b border-border-light col-span-full my-3 md:col-span-10 md:col-start-2\">\n<div class=\"mb-[30px] min-h-[30px] text-center\"><span class=\"font-utility-4 font-medium tracking-[1px] text-neutral-500 uppercase\">ADVERTISEMENT<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Lidl-Trek hasn\u2019t confirmed Pedersen\u2019s new schedule, but his originally planned start at Milan-San Remo on March 21 is surely at question.<\/p>\n<p>Pedersen\u2019s crash was eight weeks out from his six-star races, Flanders and Roubaix. So he <em>c<\/em><em>ould<\/em> be back racing ahead of the April \u201cHoly Week.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But what version of Big Mads will show up to the cobblestone double-header?<\/p>\n<p>The 30-year-old can \u201cdo a Hayman\u201d and maintain form on the indoor trainer before he builds further on smooth tarmac. Per the Dane\u2019s original schedule, that should be the Volta a Catalunya in March.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Impact:<\/strong> Not ideal.<\/p>\n<p>Visma-Lease a Bike will have dialed Vingegaard\u2019s path toward his debut at the Giro d\u2019Italia to the nearest pedal-stroke. Setbacks before the Giro could also ripple through to the next round of Vingegaard\u2019s prizefight with Tadej Poga\u010dar at the Tour de France.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad-placeholder-wrapper relative w-full border-t border-b border-border-light col-span-full my-3 md:col-span-10 md:col-start-2\">\n<div class=\"mb-[30px] min-h-[30px] text-center\"><span class=\"font-utility-4 font-medium tracking-[1px] text-neutral-500 uppercase\">ADVERTISEMENT<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The shock exit from team Visma of Vingegaard\u2019s long-time coach Tim Heemskerk further complicates the tricky process of reworking Vingegaard\u2019s roadmap to the grand tours.<\/p>\n<p>If Vingegaard gets healthy fast, he should be able to replicate the load of the UAE Tour in a block of hard training.<\/p>\n<p>But after crashing in the Basque Country in April 2024 and losing time to concussion in March 2025, Vingegaard has got to be wondering when he can catch an early-season break.<\/p>\n<h2>Wout van Aert (Visma-Lease a Bike)<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_974612\" class=\"pom-image-wrap photo-alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Wout Van Aert\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-974612 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/velo-cdn.outsideonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/GettyImages-2253792701-1.jpg?width=2048&amp;auto=webp&amp;quality=75&amp;fit=cover\"><figcaption class=\"pom-caption\"><span class=\"article__caption\">Van Aert broke his ankle before the road season had even started. <\/span> (Photo: LUC CLAESSEN \/ Belga \/ AFP via Getty Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>What happened?<\/strong> Fractured ankle on January 2 after snowy slide at cyclocross Mol.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Prognosis:<\/strong> Van Aert has been back training for multiple weeks and is reportedly able to do all his intervals except full-steam sprints. He\u2019s planning to debut 2026 at Omloop Nieuwsblad later this month, but has cautioned he won\u2019t be competitive.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Impact:<\/strong> As with Vingegaard, any setback is far from ideal when the biggest goals for the season involve taking down Tadej Poga\u010dar.<\/p>\n<p>Van Aert is deep into his recovery and rebuild, and noises out of team Visma indicate the beloved Belgian is progressing well.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad-placeholder-wrapper relative w-full border-t border-b border-border-light col-span-full my-3 md:col-span-10 md:col-start-2\">\n<div class=\"mb-[30px] min-h-[30px] text-center\"><span class=\"font-utility-4 font-medium tracking-[1px] text-neutral-500 uppercase\">ADVERTISEMENT<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>But is Wout ready to take down King Pog and Monument Master MVDP at the Tour of Flanders and Paris-Roubaix? The Aussie climber uploaded two steady indoor trainer rides to Zwift last weekend, just 10 days after he received surgery.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Impact:<\/strong> Should be minor, but with a caveat.<\/p>\n<p>Vine\u2019s first target for the year is three months away at the Giro d\u2019Italia. The world-leading climber is slated to play MVP for Jo\u00e3o Almeida in UAE Emirates-XRG\u2019s pink jersey brawl with Jonas Vingegaard and Visma-Lease a Bike.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad-placeholder-wrapper relative w-full border-t border-b border-border-light col-span-full my-3 md:col-span-10 md:col-start-2\">\n<div class=\"mb-[30px] min-h-[30px] text-center\"><span class=\"font-utility-4 font-medium tracking-[1px] text-neutral-500 uppercase\">ADVERTISEMENT<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>However, scaphoid injuries are notoriously problematic, and Vine\u2019s injury was described by team medics as \u201csignificant.\u201d Vine\u2019s form at the Giro could depend on how quickly that bone is ready for the pressure of riding outdoors.<\/p>\n<h2>Jhonatan Narv\u00e1ez (UAE Emirates-XRG)<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_977038\" class=\"pom-image-wrap photo-alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-977038\" src=\"https:\/\/velo-cdn.outsideonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/GettyImages-2219132940-2-1200x800.jpg?width=3840&amp;auto=webp&amp;quality=75&amp;fit=cover\"><figcaption class=\"pom-caption\"><span class=\"article__caption\">The Poga\u010dar rocket launcher Narv\u00e1ez broke his back at Tour Down Under. (Photo: Getty Images)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>What happened?<\/strong> Sustained multiple thoracic vertebrae fractures in crash at Tour Down Under.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Prognosis:<\/strong><em>Velo<\/em> reached out to UAE Emirates-XRG on Tuesday for an update on the Ecuadorian\u2019s recovery, but is yet to hear back.<\/p>\n<p>However, having sustained such a brutal injury just five weeks before Omloop Nieuwsblad, Narav\u00e1ez\u2019s planned start at the \u201cOpening Weekend\u201d is surely compromised. His ability to support Tadej Poga\u010dar at Milan-San Remo two weeks later will also be at threat.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Impact:<\/strong> It\u2019s hard to say how significant this will be for Narav\u00e1ez and his team without further news on his condition.<\/p>\n<p>However, Narv\u00e1ez was crucial to Poga\u010dar\u2019s assault on the Cipressa last year when the Slovenian tried to re-write the script of Milan-San Remo.<\/p>\n<p>UAE Emirates-XRG has plenty of firepower to replace Narv\u00e1ez in Pogi\u2019s San Remo train if necessary, but the 28-year-old\u2019s explosivity and racing savvy will be missed.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad-placeholder-wrapper relative w-full border-t border-b border-border-light col-span-full my-3 md:col-span-10 md:col-start-2\">\n<div class=\"mb-[30px] min-h-[30px] text-center\"><span class=\"font-utility-4 font-medium tracking-[1px] text-neutral-500 uppercase\">ADVERTISEMENT<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Sepp Kuss (Visma-Lease a Bike)<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_976896\" class=\"pom-image-wrap photo-alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Sepp Kuss\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-976896\" src=\"https:\/\/velo-cdn.outsideonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/GettyImages-2260048887.jpg?width=2048&amp;auto=webp&amp;quality=75&amp;fit=cover\"><figcaption class=\"pom-caption\"><span class=\"article__caption\">Kuss got sick on his season debut in Oman but isn\u2019t expected to e out for long.<\/span> (Photo: Dario Belingheri\/Getty Images )<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>What happened?<\/strong> Out of Tour of Oman with stomach complaints.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Prognosis:<\/strong> Kuss should be back fit and racing within days. Unless there are underlying or unrevealed issues, the 31-year-old should be able to pick up his planned schedule next month at the Volta a Catalunya.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Impact:<\/strong> Minimal. Missed significant blocks of training and canceled multiple early-season races, including the upcoming \u201cOpening Weekend\u201d of the classics.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Prognosis:<\/strong> Quick-Step indicated its star sprinter won\u2019t be back racing until mid- or late-March. His planned start at Gent-Wevelgem \u2013 where he should be considered a favourite if he\u2019s fit \u2013 could still be on the cards.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Impact:<\/strong> The fastest finisher of 2025 has hit a severe headwind.<\/p>\n<p>Merlier hasn\u2019t raced since October, and his winter training has been torpedoed.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad-placeholder-wrapper relative w-full border-t border-b border-border-light col-span-full my-3 md:col-span-10 md:col-start-2\">\n<div class=\"mb-[30px] min-h-[30px] text-center\"><span class=\"font-utility-4 font-medium tracking-[1px] text-neutral-500 uppercase\">ADVERTISEMENT<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>All those missed miles will count when the Belgian is dragging his burly frame over the mountains of the Tour de France. The lack of a solid base could also blunt the speed he needs to outkick Jasper Philipsen and Jonathan Milan in the fastest finishes of summer.<\/p>\n<p>Quick-Step will need Merlier to get healthy, fast. He\u2019s the squad\u2019s prize asset now that Remco Evenepoel is gone.<\/p>\n<h2>Olav Kooij (Decathlon CMA CGM)<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_977040\" class=\"pom-image-wrap photo-alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-977040\" src=\"https:\/\/velo-cdn.outsideonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/GettyImages-2251331519.jpg?width=2048&amp;auto=webp&amp;quality=75&amp;fit=cover\"><figcaption class=\"pom-caption\"><span class=\"article__caption\">Kooij (left) hasn\u2019t raced in his new Decathlon jersey after contracting a virus in January.<\/span> (Photo: Luc Claessen\/Getty Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>What happened?<\/strong> Contracted a virus in January and still hasn\u2019t raced for his new team, Decathlon CMA CGM.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Prognosis:<\/strong> Unknown. <em>Velo<\/em> reached out to team Decathlon on Tuesday for news and was only told \u201cthere is no update at the moment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Impact:<\/strong> It\u2019s the worst start possible for Kooij and his new team.<\/p>\n<p>Decathlon CMA CGM had bold plans for the 24-year-old after it lured him away from Visma-Lease a Bike with one of the biggest signings of the off-season. The lack of official updates on Kooij\u2019s health is far from promising, and the team\u2019s all new sprint train is stuck in the sidings.<\/p>\n<p>Kooij\u2019s planned charge on the classics is surely at question.
