In the short term, Skoda will look to prioritise its best-selling combustion cars to make the most of its allocated CO2 credits. Then, as electrification washes over its product range in the long term, it seems likely the brand will consolidate its two wagon offerings into one <a href=\"https:\/\/www.carmagazine.co.uk\/electric\/best-electric-estate-car\/\">electric estate car<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>At the preview of the upcoming <a href=\"https:\/\/www.carmagazine.co.uk\/car-news\/first-official-pictures\/skoda\/epiq\/\">Skoda Epiq<\/a> SUV, we chatted to Martin Jahn, the company\u2019s head of sales and marketing. He hinted at the internal struggle he faces in trying to keep both the Octavia and Superb in showrooms, saying: \u2018We are waiting for the final say about the CO2 laws and that will decide.<\/p>\n<div class=\"mpu-inject hide-for-medium-up\">\n<div class=\"mpu-ad advert\"><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"mpu-inject show-for-medium-up hide-for-xlarge-up\">\n<div class=\"mpu-ad advert\"><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u2018I think it\u2019s logical that, given the volumes, the Octavia is a more important car. But we want to keep both and we will keep both as long as it\u2019s economically viable and as long as it\u2019s legally possible to the business to sell them.\u2019<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/car-images.bauersecure.com\/wp-images\/232018\/480x0\/095-skoda-superb-estate.jpg?scale=down\" alt class=\"wp-image-232029\" data-interchange=\"[https:\/\/car-images.bauersecure.com\/wp-images\/232018\/480x0\/095-skoda-superb-estate.jpg?scale=down, (default)], [https:\/\/car-images.bauersecure.com\/wp-images\/232018\/720x0\/095-skoda-superb-estate.jpg?scale=down, (medium)], [https:\/\/car-images.bauersecure.com\/wp-images\/232018\/1040x0\/095-skoda-superb-estate.jpg?scale=down, (large)]\"><\/figure>\n<\/p>\n<p>Jahn told us the Superb still matters \u2013 at least for now. \u2018With the Superb, we are the one of the last few Mohicans in this in this segment,\u2019 he said. \u2018The car is important for us, not only in Europe, but for example in Turkey. And that\u2019s why we keep the limousine, because it\u2019s a key model for some other non-European markets.\u2019\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"mpu-inject hide-for-medium-up\">\n<div class=\"mpu-ad advert\"><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>But Skoda\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.carmagazine.co.uk\/car-news\/first-official-pictures\/skoda\/vision-o-concept\/\">Vision O show car<\/a> suggests that could all change when the company properly embraces electrification. The fact this EV estate concept is sized between the Octavia and Superb shows Skoda isn\u2019t confident there\u2019s enough space in the market for both models. The Vision O represents a compromise, designed to serve both sets of customers.<\/p>\n<p>At the launch of the Vision O concept, CAR magazine spoke to Johannes Neft, Skoda\u2019s head of technical development. When asked if the concept\u2019s convenient sizing was mere coincidence, Neft gave a strong \u2018no\u2019 as an answer before a PR cut in to stop him saying anything further. That\u2019s mightily suspicious.<\/p>\n<div class=\"mpu-inject show-for-medium-up hide-for-xlarge-up\">\n<div class=\"mpu-ad advert\"><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/car-images.bauersecure.com\/wp-images\/231262\/480x0\/083-skoda-vision-o.jpg?scale=down\" alt class=\"wp-image-231283\" data-interchange=\"[https:\/\/car-images.bauersecure.com\/wp-images\/231262\/480x0\/083-skoda-vision-o.jpg?scale=down, (default)], [https:\/\/car-images.bauersecure.com\/wp-images\/231262\/720x0\/083-skoda-vision-o.jpg?scale=down, (medium)], [https:\/\/car-images.bauersecure.com\/wp-images\/231262\/1040x0\/083-skoda-vision-o.jpg?scale=down, (large)]\"><\/figure>\n<div class=\"mpu-inject hide-for-medium-up\">\n<div class=\"mpu-ad advert\"><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p>Neft said: \u2018We have not decided if the Octavia and Superb will both continue. We have to check and this will also depend a bit on the size we want the car to be, and if we are going more in the direction of Superb or are we staying with Octavia.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018But if you grow the Octavia, you are getting very close to a Superb.\u2019<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">So, the coffin\u2019s already being nailed shut?<\/h2>\n<p>Unfortunately, yes \u2013 and the Superb\u2019s case looks even weaker when you start browsing Skoda\u2019s sales figures. Despite the popularity of SUVs, the Octavia was the eighth most popular car in Europe in 2024, racking up 200,000 sales. The Superb lags far behind, with only 34,000 estates finding homes in the same year. That\u2019s not an insignificant number, but it\u2019s not enough to secure the Superb\u2019s long-term future.<\/p>\n<p>Skoda\u2019s boss Klaus Zellmer said he \u2018very much believes\u2019 in the estate car segment but stressed that getting the value right on that car is \u2018one of our highest objectives\u2019.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u2018We need to stay in that price bracket [of the Octavia],\u2019 he said. \u2018Because if not, our customers will go somewhere else and we don\u2019t want that.\u2019<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/car-images.bauersecure.com\/wp-images\/12853\/480x0\/054-skoda-octavia-estate.jpg?scale=down\" alt=\"Skoda Octavia facelift review - silver, rear left three-quarters, static\" class=\"wp-image-198903\" data-interchange=\"[https:\/\/car-images.bauersecure.com\/wp-images\/12853\/480x0\/054-skoda-octavia-estate.jpg?scale=down, (default)], [https:\/\/car-images.bauersecure.com\/wp-images\/12853\/720x0\/054-skoda-octavia-estate.jpg?scale=down, (medium)], [https:\/\/car-images.bauersecure.com\/wp-images\/12853\/1040x0\/054-skoda-octavia-estate.jpg?scale=down, (large)]\"><\/figure>\n<div class=\"mpu-inject hide-for-medium-up\">\n<div class=\"mpu-ad advert\"><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"mpu-inject show-for-medium-up hide-for-xlarge-up\">\n<div class=\"mpu-ad advert\"><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p>Skoda first previewed an electric estate car three years ago when it showed models of its six new EVs \u2013 also including the Elroq, Epiq crossover, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.carmagazine.co.uk\/car-reviews\/skoda\/vision-7s-concept\/\">Vision 7S seven-seat SUV<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>While an electric estate was expected to materialise sooner, Zellmer said it was delayed so it could sit on Volkswagen\u2019s new Scalable Systems Platform (SSP) which unlocks more potential than its current MEB underpinnings. It will also allow for more electric range, a must for Skoda\u2019s high-mileage estate car customers.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018We postponed [the Vision O] because that car has to come with a new platform because with this long-distance driving you need the autonomous driving functions that are easier to realise in a new platform and not in the current platform,\u2019 said Zellmer.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How much longer does the Superb have?<\/h2>\n<p>We\u2019ll have to wait and see how European environmental politics develop in 2026. The enthusiasm Skoda\u2019s executives show for the Superb suggest CO2 regulations will be the defining factor for the car\u2019s short-term future.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m not confident the Superb will survive long enough to become an electric car, as it doesn\u2019t make sense from either an R&amp;D or production perspective to build two different sizes of car for what\u2019s already a niche market. One would suffice.<\/p>\n<div class=\"mpu-inject hide-for-medium-up\">\n<div class=\"mpu-ad advert\"><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>However, in the same way that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.carmagazine.co.uk\/car-news\/industry-news\/volkswagen\/petrol-powered-golf-gti-will-survive-beyond-2028\/\">Volkswagen plans to extend the life of the petrol Golf GTI beyond 2028<\/a>, Skoda could keep the current combustion Superb around with a series of cosmetic and technological updates. Perhaps even a second facelift.<\/p>\n<p>The Superb has fate on its side, too. Because it\u2019s based on the Volkswagen Group\u2019s MQB Evo platform (rather than the older MQB architecture found under the aging Karoq), Skoda could drop the latest T-Roc\u2019s full hybrid powertrains into the car with minimal effort.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019d drag the Superb\u2019s average fleet emissions down and allow Skoda to keep it on sale while avoid hefty penalties from the EU. It should also be reasonably cost-efficient to engineer, which adds further credence to the business case.<\/p>\n<div class=\"mpu-inject show-for-medium-up hide-for-xlarge-up\">\n<div class=\"mpu-ad advert\"><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Time will tell.
