At a glitzy event in Berlin, the four rings marked their debut in F1, following successful spells in virtually every other form of motorsport. As you\u2019d expect, the event was a heady mixture of influencers, celebrities, punchy quotes and big sponsors \u2013 such as Revolut, BP and, of course, Adidas.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Today, a lot of pieces of the puzzle are coming together,\u2019 said Gernot D\u00f6llner, CEO of AUDI AG and Chairman of the Board of Management of Audi Motorsport AG, at the team presentation. \u2018For the first time, the full power of the project is on display. We are ready and excited to inspire people around the world by taking part in Formula 1.\u2019<\/p>\n<div class=\"mpu-inject hide-for-medium-up\">\n<div class=\"mpu-ad advert\"><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/car-images.bauersecure.com\/wp-images\/246761\/480x0\/audi-f1-launch-1.jpg?scale=down\" alt class=\"wp-image-246897\" data-interchange=\"[https:\/\/car-images.bauersecure.com\/wp-images\/246761\/480x0\/audi-f1-launch-1.jpg?scale=down, (default)], [https:\/\/car-images.bauersecure.com\/wp-images\/246761\/720x0\/audi-f1-launch-1.jpg?scale=down, (medium)], [https:\/\/car-images.bauersecure.com\/wp-images\/246761\/1040x0\/audi-f1-launch-1.jpg?scale=down, (large)]\"><\/figure>\n<div class=\"mpu-inject show-for-medium-up hide-for-xlarge-up\">\n<div class=\"mpu-ad advert\"><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p>The most crucial piece of that puzzle, however, is around 340 miles south west of Berlin in the quiet town of Neuburg. Located in Bavaria, it has around 30,000 residents \u2013 and it houses Audi Sport\u2019s motorsport and R&amp;D hub. The chassis rules are changing for 2026, but the powertrains inside them are set to transform more next year than in the previous decade. F1 in 2026 could well become a power-unit formula \u2013 but is Audi ready?<\/p>\n<p>To get a closer look at Audi\u2019s F1 programme, we looked around its real engine room late last year and spoke to some of the people looking to focus the brand\u2019s expertise on an altogether new formula.<\/p>\n<div class=\"mpu-inject hide-for-medium-up\">\n<div class=\"mpu-ad advert\"><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u2018When you\u2019ve got big changes to the technical regulations on the chassis, on the power units \u2013 one of the biggest in the last\u2026 maybe 30 years,\u2019 says Mattia Binotto, head of the Audi F1 project. \u2018It\u2019s like starting from scratch for everyone.\u2019\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Starting from scratch means that we are all coming from the same baseline in terms of technical challenge,\u2019 he adds. \u2018And that certainly is an opportunity.\u2019 One of Audi\u2019s high-profile signings, the ex-Ferrari team principal is no stranger to F1, nor the importance of power units<\/p>\n<p>2026 will see new rules that place a greater focus on the electric element of F1, as well as greater freedom on the fuel side. The hybrid element will be responsible for 350kW of energy next year (double that allowed so far) and the MGU-H \u2013 which captures energy and reduces turbo lag \u2013 is also out. The result is a more powerful and trickier-to-use powertrain, but one that should be cheaper to make: the powertrain budget cap is just \u20ac180 million (around \u00a3160m) this time.<\/p>\n<p>As we look around the factory in Neuburg, it\u2019s clear Audi is building from the very beginning. It\u2019s no stranger to motorsport success, but its time at Le Mans was decades ago \u2013 and even then, focused on a turbocharged diesel engine. Audi\u2019s most recent motorsport experience instead comes from the all-electric Formula E programme. It means Ingolstadt feels better prepared for the hybrid element of the 2026 powertrain rules than the ICE side \u2013 just as well, given it\u2019s 50\/50 next year.<\/p>\n<div class=\"mpu-inject hide-for-medium-up\">\n<div class=\"mpu-ad advert\"><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"mpu-inject show-for-medium-up hide-for-xlarge-up\">\n<div class=\"mpu-ad advert\"><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>However, Audi is approaching these rules from a standing start \u2013 and that\u2019s evident when we walk around its heavily upgraded Neuburg facility. Newly optimised for the brand\u2019s F1 project, the halls of Audi\u2019s factory have a new-building vibe. The carpets are unblemished, monitors in its control rooms are still stickered up, and the reek of new equipment is everywhere. It\u2019s the smell of investment, but also inexperience.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/car-images.bauersecure.com\/wp-images\/246761\/480x0\/audi-f1-launch-2.jpg?scale=down\" alt class=\"wp-image-246898\" data-interchange=\"[https:\/\/car-images.bauersecure.com\/wp-images\/246761\/480x0\/audi-f1-launch-2.jpg?scale=down, (default)], [https:\/\/car-images.bauersecure.com\/wp-images\/246761\/720x0\/audi-f1-launch-2.jpg?scale=down, (medium)], [https:\/\/car-images.bauersecure.com\/wp-images\/246761\/1040x0\/audi-f1-launch-2.jpg?scale=down, (large)]\"><\/figure>\n<\/p>\n<p>\u2018I\u2019m fully aware and conscious as well that we are fighting against settled organisations, very strong competitors,\u2019 warns Binotto. \u2018The ones that are winning today are winning because they are strong, well organised, and have the assets, the resources and the tools that are required to be the best. And that will be unchanged.\u2019<\/p>\n<div class=\"mpu-inject hide-for-medium-up\">\n<div class=\"mpu-ad advert\"><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u2018We know as well that becoming a successful team in F1 may take several seasons. I think we are humble enough to understand that the others may be stronger.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Still, it\u2019s worth noting that neither testing nor the first race will offer a clear read on the competitive picture. The performance order is likely to fluctuate widely as teams get to grips with their new machines. With that in mind, it\u2019s not just Audi\u2019s initial development that will be crucial \u2013 but its adaptability and response time.<\/p>\n<div class=\"mpu-inject show-for-medium-up hide-for-xlarge-up\">\n<div class=\"mpu-ad advert\"><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u2018I think we measure the best organisations, or the best teams,\u2019 said Binotto, \u2018by the ways that they react \u2013 how long it takes to address the problem.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>The link between Sauber\u2019s base in Hinwil, Switzerland and Neuburg will be crucial to Audi\u2019s chances of success, as will the culture needed to gel the two together and fix issues as quickly as possible.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Most have mainly two locations for chassis and powertrain, only really Ferrari having everything under the same roof,\u2019 says Binotto of the split-site model. It\u2019s a challenge, but it\u2019s not an impossible one. \u2018There have been winning teams set up like that \u2013 and, as a matter of fact, chassis and powertrain are different competencies, requiring different skills,\u2019 he reminds us.<\/p>\n<div class=\"mpu-inject hide-for-medium-up\">\n<div class=\"mpu-ad advert\"><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/car-images.bauersecure.com\/wp-images\/246761\/480x0\/audi-f1-launch-4.jpg?scale=down\" alt class=\"wp-image-246900\" data-interchange=\"[https:\/\/car-images.bauersecure.com\/wp-images\/246761\/480x0\/audi-f1-launch-4.jpg?scale=down, (default)], [https:\/\/car-images.bauersecure.com\/wp-images\/246761\/720x0\/audi-f1-launch-4.jpg?scale=down, (medium)], [https:\/\/car-images.bauersecure.com\/wp-images\/246761\/1040x0\/audi-f1-launch-4.jpg?scale=down, (large)]\"><\/figure>\n<\/p>\n<p>Linking the two sites is where Ingolstadt\u2019s other huge signing comes in: ex-Red Bull man Jonathan Wheatley, now in Audi\u2019s team principal role. It\u2019ll be his job to get Audi\u2019s extensive and ongoing investment firing on all cylinders and working in harmony \u2013 a bit like the marriage of hybrid and ICE power in the car itself.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Momentum is so important in a Formula One team, especially when you\u2019re trying, as a team, to catch up with the big teams, to break through this establishment,\u2019 he said. \u2018We have an ambitious target, and the way we\u2019re going to get there is going to involve keeping this momentum going, keeping continuous improvement in the team, and really using everything we have in our power to keep progressing.\u2019<\/p>\n<div class=\"mpu-inject hide-for-medium-up\">\n<div class=\"mpu-ad advert\"><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"mpu-inject show-for-medium-up hide-for-xlarge-up\">\n<div class=\"mpu-ad advert\"><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Audi\u2019s ambitions are realistic for 2026, but get loftier after that, with wins targeted from 2030 onwards.
