terminal, waiting on a delayed train to Paris, a young woman next to me turned to who I presume was her boyfriend and doled out some unsolicited fashion advice. \u201cLook,\u201d she said, pointing to a gilet-clad Man in Finance. \u201cI just think men in turtlenecks look so stupid.\u201d I fear if this lady had been born in the 16th century, she\u2019d have a pretty hard time going about her life. Back then, it wasn\u2019t merino wool from Uniqlo that adorned men\u2019s necks \u2013 it was gigantic cartwheel collars, solid, starched, and sticking 12 inches out past their faces. And if she\u2019d taken a trip to the menswear shows across the Channel, she would\u2019ve found it wasn\u2019t just scary turtlenecks on display \u2013 the Elizabethan ruff had been reborn on the runway, alongside even more collars and bows of varying degrees.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Before the catwalks had even begun, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/jonathan-anderson\"><span>Jonathan Anderson<\/span><\/a><span> was already getting ruff and ready, sending out an ivory collarette as the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/dior\"><span>Dior<\/span><\/a><span> AW26 invite. On the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/lgn-louis-gabriel-nouchi\"><span>LGN Louis Gabriel Nouchi<\/span><\/a><span> catwalk, model Callum Harper appeared shirtless, bar a curly, shearling creation slung over his shoulders, while over at Feng Chen Wang, similar styles appeared in pink, taupe, and faded turquoise. In Berlin, at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/tag\/gmbh\"><span>GmbH<\/span><\/a><span>, designers Benjamin A. Huseby and Serhat I\u015fik accessorised their club-ready looks with detachable fur ruffs that folded down to cover the shoulders, while Copenhagen brand Ranra also debuted high-neck fur collars at their city\u2019s fashion week.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>So, if the men\u2019s catwalks are anything to go by, the ruff has been reborn for the modern day \u2013 but it\u2019s not only that style of neckwear that\u2019s booming in popularity. Things began last season when Anderson, for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/fashion\/article\/68128\/1\/christian-dior-mens-ss26-jonathan-anderson-paris-fashion-week-pfw-debut-show\"><span>his SS26 debut<\/span><\/a><span>, kitted out half his models in satin neckbands with bows attached to the front. Fast forward to AW26, and brands like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/charles-jeffrey\"><span>Charles Jeffrey<\/span><\/a><span> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/lanvin\"><span>Lanvin<\/span><\/a><span> have shown similar neckband styles, while <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/tag\/dries-van-noten\"><span>Dries Van Noten<\/span><\/a><span> and even <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/louis-vuitton\"><span>Louis Vuitton<\/span><\/a><span> sent models down the runway with bow-like scarves knotted around their necks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>So, what does this renewed focus on fancifying the neck mean? In the 16th century, ruffs were all about denoting status, literally taking up more space in society with your outsized, imposing neckwear. If you\u2019re reading this, you probably know that there\u2019s nothing more status-driven than the fashion industry, so it seems that, on the catwalks, men are reclaiming their space by puffing out their collars and reminding us who\u2019s boss. Go men! Back then, it wasn\u2019t merino wool from Uniqlo that adorned men\u2019s necks \u2013 it was gigantic cartwheel collars, solid, starched, and sticking 12 inches out past their faces. And if she\u2019d taken a trip to the menswear shows across the Channel, she would\u2019ve found it wasn\u2019t just scary turtlenecks on display \u2013 the Elizabethan ruff had been reborn on the runway, alongside even more collars and bows of varying degrees.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Before the catwalks had even begun, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/jonathan-anderson\"><span>Jonathan Anderson<\/span><\/a><span> was already getting ruff and ready, sending out an ivory collarette as the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/dior\"><span>Dior<\/span><\/a><span> AW26 invite. On the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/lgn-louis-gabriel-nouchi\"><span>LGN Louis Gabriel Nouchi<\/span><\/a><span> catwalk, model Callum Harper appeared shirtless, bar a curly, shearling creation slung over his shoulders, while over at Feng Chen Wang, similar styles appeared in pink, taupe, and faded turquoise. In Berlin, at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/tag\/gmbh\"><span>GmbH<\/span><\/a><span>, designers Benjamin A. Huseby and Serhat I\u015fik accessorised their club-ready looks with detachable fur ruffs that folded down to cover the shoulders, while Copenhagen brand Ranra also debuted high-neck fur collars at their city\u2019s fashion week.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>So, if the men\u2019s catwalks are anything to go by, the ruff has been reborn for the modern day \u2013 but it\u2019s not only that style of neckwear that\u2019s booming in popularity. Things began last season when Anderson, for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/fashion\/article\/68128\/1\/christian-dior-mens-ss26-jonathan-anderson-paris-fashion-week-pfw-debut-show\"><span>his SS26 debut<\/span><\/a><span>, kitted out half his models in satin neckbands with bows attached to the front. Fast forward to AW26, and brands like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/charles-jeffrey\"><span>Charles Jeffrey<\/span><\/a><span> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/lanvin\"><span>Lanvin<\/span><\/a><span> have shown similar neckband styles, while <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/tag\/dries-van-noten\"><span>Dries Van Noten<\/span><\/a><span> and even <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/louis-vuitton\"><span>Louis Vuitton<\/span><\/a><span> sent models down the runway with bow-like scarves knotted around their necks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>So, what does this renewed focus on fancifying the neck mean? In the 16th century, ruffs were all about denoting status, literally taking up more space in society with your outsized, imposing neckwear. If you\u2019re reading this, you probably know that there\u2019s nothing more status-driven than the fashion industry, so it seems that, on the catwalks, men are reclaiming their space by puffing out their collars and reminding us who\u2019s boss.
