If I were a celebrity, I’d probably get carried away with access to a super-talented glam team and go fully over the top for every occasion. Running out to get coffee? Full updo. Red carpet moment? Pull out all the stops. But that’s where Margot Robbie and I differ\u2014and why she’s the pro, not me. For the Parisian premiere of Wuthering Heights,<\/em> Robbie pulled off a masterclass in mixing eras by pairing an ornate, Victorian-inspired red couture gown with laid-back, modern hair, makeup, and nails.<\/p>\n

Thus far, the Wuthering Heights<\/em> press tour has been full of delightful, surprising beauty details: crimper waves one day, scattered hair ribbons the next. In Paris, Robbie slipped into a custom Chanel couture gown made of luxurious red velvet, with a corseted bodice, bustle, and flowing train\u2014a piece that looks right off the set of the forthcoming film. But instead of wearing it with an era-appropriate updo piled with curls, Robbie’s hairstylist Bryce Scarlett mixed things up in an unexpected way, styling the ultra-fancy gown with laid-back, beachy, barely there bends and waves flowing down to mid-back.<\/p>\n

The more casual, easygoing hairstyle keeps the dress (and its matching choker necklace) from looking costumey or too<\/em> on theme for the dark romance film, as do the rest of Robbie’s glam details. Makeup artist Pati Dubroff kept the star’s makeup light and fresh, anchored by flushed cheeks and blotted red lip, and it certainly looks like Robbie skipped nail polish entirely in favor of short, perfectly groomed bare (or very close to bare) nails.<\/p>\n

This cool juxtaposition of romantic, somewhat gothic Victorian details and more modern beauty trends is perfectly in tune with the movie itself. Wuthering Heights<\/em> hair and makeup designer Si\u00e2n Miller told Allure<\/em> that while the movie does showcase some period hair and makeup, it’s much more imaginative and fanciful than a traditional adaptation would be. \u201cWhat [Emerald] was really clear about from the beginning is that this was to be seen through the imagination of a 14-year-old girl\u2014this was Emerald\u2019s imagination,\u201d Miller shared. That means hairstyles studded with gemstones and pearls, gemstones sparkling across Robbie’s cheeks, and braids tied together with passion-red ribbons. \u201cIt was clear that it would be a kind of fever dream.\u201d<\/p>\n
