Julianna Barwick & Mary Lattimore: Tragic Magic<\/em> [InFin\u00e9]<\/h2>\n

Last year, curators at the French museum Mus\u00e9e de la Musique invited Julianna Barwick and Mary Lattimore to use some of their historically significant artifacts to record an album. The musicians\u2014both of whom make airy, whimsical, near-ambient compositions\u2014took them up on the offer without hesitation. Although they spent nine days testing out pieces and taping compositions, the duo whittled down their recordings into an album\u2019s worth of material. Musically, Tragic Magic<\/em> is almost exactly what you might expect: songs with ethereal vocal harmonies and gentle harp plucks, complete with titles like \u201cPerpetual Adoration\u201d and \u201cMelted Moon.\u201d<\/p>\n

Between the launch of his surprisingly viable acting career and the birth of three children, A$AP Rocky has found plenty of time since 2018\u2019s Testing<\/em> to pretend his follow-up, Don\u2019t Be Dumb<\/em>, was just around the corner. The campaign kicked up a gear last month when he unveiled the record\u2019s visual universe, with Tim Burton behind the album art and the director\u2019s close collaborator Winona Ryder in the \u201cPunk Rocky\u201d video\u2014plus another fellow Burtonite Danny Elfman on string arrangements. \u201cHighjack,\u201d the rapper\u2019s 2024 track with Jessica Pratt, does not make the cut, but a new one called \u201cThe End\u201d does. And Rocky helicoptered in a squadron of other guests too, including Doechii, Gorillaz, Thundercat, Westside Gunn, Will.i.am, and Tyler, the Creator.<\/p>\n

Peaer: Doppelg\u00e4nger<\/em> [Danger Collective]<\/h2>\n

What began as a slowcore outlet for Peter Katz a decade ago has since become a slightly poppier and mathier trio over the years, eventually evolving into the present-day iteration of Peaer. Doppelg\u00e4nger<\/em>, their first new album in nearly seven years, wastes no time explaining just how happy they are to be back with the jubilant opener \u201cEnd of the World.\u201d From there, though, Peaer find themselves caught in bristly knots like \u201cButton\u201d and \u201cBad News,\u201d suggesting they returned to a thornier world that needs some untangling after all.<\/p>\n

evilgiane: Giane 2<\/em> [Surf Gang]<\/h2>\n

In the midst of a tour with his Surf Gang cadre, evilgiane has surprise-released this follow-up to his 2022 instrumental LP Giane<\/em>. Clams Casino and Rue Jacobs are the only guests, the former co-composing the piano-and-sub-bass elegy \u201cPoker\u201d and the latter riding the vaporwave of \u201cAerial Passing.\u201d\u00a0The rest of the record is a showcase for evilgiane\u2019s ambient finesse, full of muffled earworms and lulling tones, with the odd technical beat racing in to wake you from its daydream.<\/p>\n

Xiu Xiu: Xiu Mutha Fuckin\u2019 Xiu: Vol. 1<\/em> [Polyvinyl]<\/h2>\n

Newcomers to Xiu Xiu could do worse than starting with their hauntingly intense version of Robyn\u2019s \u201cDancing on My Own,\u201d one of 12 covers that make Xiu Mutha Fuckin\u2019 Xiu: Vol. 1<\/em> a perfect introduction to the influential art-rockers\u2019\u00a0dark allure. About half of the tracklist checks out\u2014takes on direct antecedents like Throbbing Gristle, This Heat, and Coil\u2014leaving a half-dozen curveballs, from a dubbed-out take on Talking Heads\u2019 \u201cPsycho Killer\u201d\u00a0to an industrial revamp of GloRilla\u2019s \u201cLick or Sum\u201d and a disarmingly gorgeous interpretation of Daniel Johnston\u2019s \u201cSome Things Last a Long Time.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sleaford Mods foretold The Demise of Planet X<\/em> with an increasingly surprising string of collaborations with British darlings, from Life Without Buildings\u2019 Sue Tompkins (on the joyous single \u201cNo Touch\u201d) to Andrea Arnold (director of Fish Tank<\/em> and, now, the \u201cNo Touch\u201d video) to Game of Thrones<\/em> and Star Wars<\/em> star Gwendolyn Christie, who blazes through an unlikely rap verse on \u201cThe Good Life.\u201d That collaborative spirit extends to the commonwealth on \u201cElitist G.O.A.T.\u201d\u2014which features New Zealander Aldous Harding\u2014but not to the likes of compatriots Rishi Sunak or the old English fascist Henry Williamson, who get a lyrical kicking in Jason Williamson\u2019s latest batch of reliably caustic bars.<\/p>\n

Once a hired hand for the likes of Jimmy Eat World and Damien Jurado, Courtney Marie Andrews has beaten down a country-folk path of her own in the past decade. The poet and singer-songwriter recorded Valentine<\/em>, her follow-up to 2022\u2019s Loose Future<\/em>, in Los Angeles, with Jerry Bernhardt co-producing and Grizzly Bear\u2019s Chris Bear on drums. \u201cLove, it turns out, is a lot more than I gave it credit for,\u201d Andrews says of the source material. \u201cI was in one of the darkest periods of my life, and songs were the only way I could reckon with it.\u201d<\/p>\n
