performance in that film, the lyric becomes particularly important to me today, as I gaze upon an image of the musician <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/charli-xcx\"><span>Charli xcx<\/span><\/a><span>. She is standing on a red carpet. She is at the premiere of <\/span><em><span>Wuthering Heights<\/span><\/em><span>. She is wearing a dress that is shaped like a penis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>For this particular moment, Ms. xcx enlisted the dab hands at Vivienne Westwood \u2013 who\u2019ve famously never shied away from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/fashion\/article\/65027\/1\/vivienne-westwood-top-ten-x-rated-moments-penis-pendant-kate-moss-pamela\"><span>an X-rated gesture<\/span><\/a><span> \u2013 but they\u2019re not the only ones taking phallic forms to new heights. Just two weeks ago, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/teyana-taylor\"><span>Teyana Taylor<\/span><\/a><span> arrived at the premiere of her new film <\/span><em><span>The Rip<\/span><\/em><span> in an Ashi Studio couture gown, two globular protrusions jutting from its hips. Last September, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/jonathan-anderson\"><span>Jonathan Anderson<\/span><\/a><span> made his long-awaited <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/fashion\/article\/68806\/1\/christian-dior-ss26-jonathan-anderson-paris-fashion-week-pfw-debut-womenswear\"><span>womenswear debut for Dior<\/span><\/a><span>, and that collection included a similarly designed dress \u2013 a draped and knotted cream creation with bouncing bags jiggling at the hips.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Always ahead of the curve, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/tag\/daniel-roseberry\"><span>Daniel Roseberry<\/span><\/a><span> presented a gown on his AW 24 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/schiaparelli\"><span>Schiaparelli<\/span><\/a><span> runway well over a year ago that had a touch of the peen to it, which was then quickly followed by a similar Christian Siriano dress Kate Beckinsale wore on the red carpet. Over the last few years, women\u2019s hips have become a continued point of fascination for designers across ready-to-wear and couture, exaggerating them to inhuman proportions. Whether they\u2019re sharp and angular or soft and rounded, everyone\u2019s got in on the act, from independent designers like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/duran-lantink\"><span>Duran Lantink<\/span><\/a><span> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/yuhan-wang\"><span>Yuhan Wang<\/span><\/a><span>, to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/tag\/alaia\"><span>Ala\u00efa<\/span><\/a><span>, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/bottega-veneta\"><span>Bottega Veneta<\/span><\/a><span> and, of course, Roseberry\u2019s Schiaparelli. The current phallic forms we see today seem to be an evolution of that trend, as designers exaggerate the female form to such a degree that it ironically ends up looking more like a penis. Paging Dr Freud!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Of course, like with all trends, these dresses have historical precedence. In the 17th and 18th centuries, side hoops called panniers were used to horizontally extend skirts and dresses at the hips, and bustles were used in the 19th century to make bums look bigger. Not only did the proportions of these undergarments make historical baddies look more snatched, the clothes also physically took up more space, displaying more of their expensive fabrics for everyone to see. She is standing on a red carpet. She is at the premiere of <\/span><em><span>Wuthering Heights<\/span><\/em><span>. She is wearing a dress that is shaped like a penis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>For this particular moment, Ms. xcx enlisted the dab hands at Vivienne Westwood \u2013 who\u2019ve famously never shied away from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/fashion\/article\/65027\/1\/vivienne-westwood-top-ten-x-rated-moments-penis-pendant-kate-moss-pamela\"><span>an X-rated gesture<\/span><\/a><span> \u2013 but they\u2019re not the only ones taking phallic forms to new heights. Just two weeks ago, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/teyana-taylor\"><span>Teyana Taylor<\/span><\/a><span> arrived at the premiere of her new film <\/span><em><span>The Rip<\/span><\/em><span> in an Ashi Studio couture gown, two globular protrusions jutting from its hips. Last September, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/jonathan-anderson\"><span>Jonathan Anderson<\/span><\/a><span> made his long-awaited <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/fashion\/article\/68806\/1\/christian-dior-ss26-jonathan-anderson-paris-fashion-week-pfw-debut-womenswear\"><span>womenswear debut for Dior<\/span><\/a><span>, and that collection included a similarly designed dress \u2013 a draped and knotted cream creation with bouncing bags jiggling at the hips.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Always ahead of the curve, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/tag\/daniel-roseberry\"><span>Daniel Roseberry<\/span><\/a><span> presented a gown on his AW 24 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/schiaparelli\"><span>Schiaparelli<\/span><\/a><span> runway well over a year ago that had a touch of the peen to it, which was then quickly followed by a similar Christian Siriano dress Kate Beckinsale wore on the red carpet. Over the last few years, women\u2019s hips have become a continued point of fascination for designers across ready-to-wear and couture, exaggerating them to inhuman proportions. Whether they\u2019re sharp and angular or soft and rounded, everyone\u2019s got in on the act, from independent designers like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/duran-lantink\"><span>Duran Lantink<\/span><\/a><span> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/yuhan-wang\"><span>Yuhan Wang<\/span><\/a><span>, to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/tag\/alaia\"><span>Ala\u00efa<\/span><\/a><span>, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/bottega-veneta\"><span>Bottega Veneta<\/span><\/a><span> and, of course, Roseberry\u2019s Schiaparelli. The current phallic forms we see today seem to be an evolution of that trend, as designers exaggerate the female form to such a degree that it ironically ends up looking more like a penis. Paging Dr Freud!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Of course, like with all trends, these dresses have historical precedence. In the 17th and 18th centuries, side hoops called panniers were used to horizontally extend skirts and dresses at the hips, and bustles were used in the 19th century to make bums look bigger. Not only did the proportions of these undergarments make historical baddies look more snatched, the clothes also physically took up more space, displaying more of their expensive fabrics for everyone to see.
