The events have sparked widespread protests, as the city confronts the unchecked violence of state power. Among those responding is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/tokkitokkitattoo\/\">Tokki Tokki Tattoo<\/a> studio, located downtown in the city.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Alongside assembling protest supply kits, painting protest signs and selling \u201cfuck ICE\u201d bandanas, the resident artists have been offering \u201cChinga la migra\u201d tattoos, a Spanish phrase that loosely translates to \u201cfuck the border patrol\u201d or \u201cfuck immigration\u201d. It\u2019s a phrase that has emerged as a direct response to ICE\u2019s targeted persecution of Latinx communities in the US.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cI came into work after the murder of Renee Good, and my coworker and I were just so devastated and angry. My coworker just pointed at her arm and said \u2018Chinga la migra,\u2019 implying she wanted it tattooed on her. I didn\u2019t even hesitate to tattoo it on her. After I posted the photo to Instagram I just started to get so many requests for that exact tattoo,\u201d explains <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/prettyinink_tattoo\/\">Rebecca Smith<\/a>, one of the studio\u2019s resident artists.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Since then, Smith has done many versions of the tattoos, in different fonts and sizes, at a heavily discounted rate. When she shared <\/span><span>a collage of the fresh ink on social media, she said it wa<\/span><span>s heartwarming to see the community rally together. \u201cI think the fact that they are permanent just shows a real devotion to the people. This isn\u2019t a phase. We are here together. We care about humans and we always will. What ICE is doing is wrong and we won\u2019t stand for it,\u201d Smith says. On Friday, the studio will be hosting a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DTy1vFaCetO\/?img_index=1\">\u2018donation flash day\u2019<\/a>, c<\/span>ollecting food and household items for the community in exchange for tattoos (or even if you aren\u2019t getting a tattoo!).<\/p>\n<p><span>Below, we talk to the artist about Tokki Tokki studio, the Minneapolis community, and the overwhelming response to the tattoos.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"instagram-container embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"media-instagram\" data-script-depends=\"instagram-embeds\">\n<script async src=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/embed.js\"><\/script><\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><strong>Can you tell us about the studio and what kind of environment you\u2019ve built there?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Rebecca Smith: <\/strong><span>Tokki Tokki is an all-female, POC\/queer-owned tattoo shop located in downtown Minneapolis. We try our best to be a safe space for our community and clients. We are a passionate group of artists. But just like any tattoo shop, we are a little weird and completely happy to be that way. We love how different all our clients are, but they all share the same beliefs about what is going on in our community.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>How do you see your studio within the community?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Rebecca Smith: <\/strong><span>Community is huge to us. We love our community and want to support them as much as we possibly can. We are taking donations for food and to pay rent for people in need, and seeing the amount of support from everyone has just been so overwhelming. It proves that the people of Minneapolis are people who care. It\u2019s truly inspiring and heartwarming.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>What has the reaction been to the \u201cChinga la migra\u201d tattoos?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Rebecca Smith: <\/strong><span>The reaction has been honestly so surprising! It has really just been incredible seeing so much support from Minneapolis. It\u2019s been a little light in my life in such a dark time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>What kinds of conversations happen in the room while these tattoos are being done?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Rebecca Smith: <\/strong><span>The main topic that\u2019s getting talked about truly comes down to \u2018Fuck ICE\u2019 and what we can do to help and stop all this. I am hearing the stories of ICE in people\u2019s neighbourhoods \u2013 how they are stalking their children\u2019s schools and how they are taking their neighbours.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>What does the energy in and around the studio feel like right now?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Rebecca Smith: <\/strong><span>The energy is definitely passionate. Among those responding is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/tokkitokkitattoo\/\">Tokki Tokki Tattoo<\/a> studio, located downtown in the city.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Alongside assembling protest supply kits, painting protest signs and selling \u201cfuck ICE\u201d bandanas, the resident artists have been offering \u201cChinga la migra\u201d tattoos, a Spanish phrase that loosely translates to \u201cfuck the border patrol\u201d or \u201cfuck immigration\u201d. It\u2019s a phrase that has emerged as a direct response to ICE\u2019s targeted persecution of Latinx communities in the US.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cI came into work after the murder of Renee Good, and my coworker and I were just so devastated and angry. My coworker just pointed at her arm and said \u2018Chinga la migra,\u2019 implying she wanted it tattooed on her. I didn\u2019t even hesitate to tattoo it on her. After I posted the photo to Instagram I just started to get so many requests for that exact tattoo,\u201d explains <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/prettyinink_tattoo\/\">Rebecca Smith<\/a>, one of the studio\u2019s resident artists.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Since then, Smith has done many versions of the tattoos, in different fonts and sizes, at a heavily discounted rate. When she shared <\/span><span>a collage of the fresh ink on social media, she said it wa<\/span><span>s heartwarming to see the community rally together. \u201cI think the fact that they are permanent just shows a real devotion to the people. This isn\u2019t a phase. We are here together. We care about humans and we always will. What ICE is doing is wrong and we won\u2019t stand for it,\u201d Smith says. On Friday, the studio will be hosting a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DTy1vFaCetO\/?img_index=1\">\u2018donation flash day\u2019<\/a>, c<\/span>ollecting food and household items for the community in exchange for tattoos (or even if you aren\u2019t getting a tattoo!).<\/p>\n<p><span>Below, we talk to the artist about Tokki Tokki studio, the Minneapolis community, and the overwhelming response to the tattoos.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"instagram-container embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"media-instagram\" data-script-depends=\"instagram-embeds\">\n<script async src=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/embed.js\"><\/script><\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><strong>Can you tell us about the studio and what kind of environment you\u2019ve built there?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Rebecca Smith: <\/strong><span>Tokki Tokki is an all-female, POC\/queer-owned tattoo shop located in downtown Minneapolis. We try our best to be a safe space for our community and clients. We are a passionate group of artists. But just like any tattoo shop, we are a little weird and completely happy to be that way. We love how different all our clients are, but they all share the same beliefs about what is going on in our community.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>How do you see your studio within the community?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Rebecca Smith: <\/strong><span>Community is huge to us. We love our community and want to support them as much as we possibly can. We are taking donations for food and to pay rent for people in need, and seeing the amount of support from everyone has just been so overwhelming. It proves that the people of Minneapolis are people who care. It\u2019s truly inspiring and heartwarming.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>What has the reaction been to the \u201cChinga la migra\u201d tattoos?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Rebecca Smith: <\/strong><span>The reaction has been honestly so surprising! It has really just been incredible seeing so much support from Minneapolis. It\u2019s been a little light in my life in such a dark time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>What kinds of conversations happen in the room while these tattoos are being done?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Rebecca Smith: <\/strong><span>The main topic that\u2019s getting talked about truly comes down to \u2018Fuck ICE\u2019 and what we can do to help and stop all this. I am hearing the stories of ICE in people\u2019s neighbourhoods \u2013 how they are stalking their children\u2019s schools and how they are taking their neighbours.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>What does the energy in and around the studio feel like right now?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Rebecca Smith: <\/strong><span>The energy is definitely passionate.
