{"id":1409587,"date":"2026-01-15T17:50:00","date_gmt":"2026-01-15T14:50:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/analyse.optim.biz\/?p=1409587"},"modified":"2026-01-15T17:50:00","modified_gmt":"2026-01-15T14:50:00","slug":"us-fascism-is-killing-art","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/analyse.optim.biz\/?p=1409587","title":{"rendered":"US fascism is killing art"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"article-body wrapper\">\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><span>By many accounts, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/donald-trump\">Donald Trump<\/a> is an art lover&#8230; as long as the art <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theartnewspaper.com\/2024\/08\/27\/trump-posing-with-my-book-is-comical-andres-serrano\"><span>has his face on it<\/span><\/a><span>, and ideally <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2018\/10\/16\/657923267\/the-republican-club-painter-andy-thomas-on-how-his-work-ended-up-in-the-white-ho\"><span>bolsters his reputation<\/span><\/a><span> as a world-historical figure. Back in the 80s, he even commissioned <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/andy-warhol\">Andy Warhol<\/a> to create a tribute to Trump Tower (which he ultimately rejected, refusing to pay \u2013\u00a0Warhol later branded him a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/arts-entertainment\/art\/features\/andy-warhol-tate-modern-pop-art-elton-john-marilyn-monroe-elvis-presley-a9375021.html\"><span>cheapskate<\/span><\/a><span>). The question is: why is such an avid cultural connoisseur working so hard to undermine the arts in America today? Shouldn\u2019t he be working hard to <\/span><em><span>bolster <\/span><\/em><span>the creative industries, in the hope that grateful artists will pay tribute to his patronage for years to come?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>This is, of course, wishful thinking. Even as the US marks its 250th birthday, many of the nation\u2019s museums and art institutions are struggling for survival, amid brutal funding cuts and pressure to bow to \u201canti-woke\u201d censorship. According to a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aam-us.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/AAMSnapshotReport25.pdf\"><span>survey<\/span><\/a><span> published by the American Alliance of Museums (AAM) late last year, more than a third (34 per cent) of museums saw government grants or contracts cancelled in 2025. Others have been affected by government-led layoffs and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/life-culture\/article\/66069\/1\/whats-next-for-americas-dei-workforce-donald-trump\"><span>anti-DEI<\/span><\/a><span> legislation&#8230; which is a polite way of saying \u2018rewriting history\u2019, when you consider it\u2019s been used to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/08\/19\/us\/politics\/trump-smithsonian-slavery.html\">minimise Black history<\/a> at the Smithsonian and disrupt the conservation of other historical artefacts, like African American quilts at the <a href=\"https:\/\/bampfa.org\/news\/update-regarding-loss-imls-and-nea-grants-supporting-african-american-quilt-collection-bampfa\">Berkely Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The result? While a few institutions report the same or even better attendance than pre-pandemic levels (in 2019), more than half are worse off. This is a significant decline from attendance levels recorded in 2024. \u201cIt revealed some sobering news, which was that recovery from the pandemic wasn\u2019t just coming to a stall but actually reversing,\u201d the AAM\u2019s Natanya Khashan told the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/culture\/2026\/jan\/13\/trump-arts-institutions-museum-funding-cuts\"><em><span>Guardian<\/span><\/em><\/a><span> this week. \u201cWe\u2019re seeing declines in attendance, weaker financial performance and growing instability across the museum field.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content has-tweet\" data-embed-type=\"media-twitter\" data-script-depends=\"twitter-widgets\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Guillermo del Toro says, &quot;When they tell you that art doesn&#39;t matter&#8230; or that a f*cking app can do art that leads to fascism.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>Variety&#39;s 10 Directors to Watch &amp; Creative Impact Awards. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/PSIFF?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#PSIFF<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/1LAYTwLYYv\">pic.twitter.com\/1LAYTwLYYv<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Variety (@Variety) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Variety\/status\/2007885522233094186?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 4, 2026<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><span>It isn\u2019t very surprising to see the Trump administration wielding censorship and budget cuts as a weapon in the ongoing \u2018culture wars\u2019 \u2013\u00a0the liberal slant of arts and culture programming hardly falls in line with the current administration\u2019s right-wing and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/tcf.org\/content\/report\/centurys-new-democracy-meter-shows-america-took-an-authoritarian-turn-in-2025\/\"><span>increasingly authoritarian<\/span><\/a><span> ambitions. Even the submissions for this year\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/art-photography\/article\/67007\/1\/us-enlist-dissident-right-art-hos-win-venice-biennale-curtis-yarvin-dimes-square\"><span>US pavilion<\/span><\/a><span> at the Venice Biennale were forbidden from promoting diversity or \u201cpolitical\u201d messaging.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>But how big a red flag is the decline of American art, really? <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/life-culture\/article\/69256\/1\/guillermo-del-toro-frankenstein-bucket-list-film-interview-netflix-jacob-elordi\"><em><span>Frankenstein<\/span><\/em><\/a><span> director Guillermo del Toro has a pretty clear answer to that question. \u201cAt a time when people tell you art is not important, that is always the prelude to fascism,\u201d he <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2026\/film\/news\/guillermo-del-toro-art-not-important-prelude-to-fascism-1236623278\/\"><span>declared<\/span><\/a><span> while accepting an award at the recent Palm Springs International Film Festival. \u201cWhen they tell you it doesn\u2019t matter, when they tell you a fucking app can do art you say, if it\u2019s that important, why the fuck do they want it so bad? The answer is because they think they can debase everything that makes us a little better, a little more human.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>With the US government conducting \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2026\/1\/8\/abduction-of-venezuelas-maduro-illegal-despite-us-charges-experts-say\"><span>illegal<\/span><\/a><span>\u201d military operations in Venezuela, threatening to \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/my-europe\/2026\/01\/14\/danish-foreign-minister-says-did-not-convince-trump-to-back-off-from-greenland-after-crunc\"><span>conquer<\/span><\/a><span>\u201d Greenland, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/trump-administration\/vance-says-death-minnesota-woman-killed-ice-was-tragedy-making-rcna253063\"><span>openly supporting<\/span><\/a><span> the murder of a peaceful protester in its own borders \u2013 as well as a paramilitary force (ICE) that even Joe Rogan has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2026\/01\/14\/ice-trump-joe-rogan-immigration-minneapolis-shooting\">likened<\/a> to the Gestapo \u2013 del Toro\u2019s warning doesn\u2019t seem too farfetched. The filmmaker\u2019s complaint about art made by a \u201cfucking app\u201d is also significant, given the Trump administration\u2019s embrace of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/life-culture\/article\/69360\/1\/slop-enshittification-2025-internet-implode-shumon-basar-gunseli-yalcinkaya\"><span>AI-generated slop<\/span><\/a><span>, memes, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/art-photography\/article\/68257\/1\/how-kitsch-became-aesthetic-right-wing-america-dhs-alligator-alcatraz-meme\"><span>retrograde kitsch<\/span><\/a><span> to further its agenda \u2013 and displace, or \u201cdebase\u201d, human art \u2013 on social media.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>All of this leaves the state of American art in a pretty poor place, going into 2026. But could there be a silver lining? Throughout history, great art has emerged from times of political struggle and resistance, from World War I, to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/tag\/pussy-riot\"><span>post-Soviet Russia<\/span><\/a><span>, to 70s NYC (AKA the birthplace of hip-hop). Outside of big institutions, artists can continue to make a difference and maybe even channel their anger into something entirely new, especially if they follow del Toro\u2019s advice: \u201cBe kind, be involved, believe in your art.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"newsletter-inline-last\">\n<div class=\"newsletter-small\">\n<div class=\"inner\">\n<h1 class=\"newsletter-title\">Escape the algorithm!
