    Want to take a break from braids? Twists could be your new go-to. Though often thought of as one style, twists actually encompass an entire category\u2014with options ranging from Marley to mini. But how do you know which one’s right for you? To help break it all down, we tapped two natural hairstylists to walk us through the most popular types of twists, who they work best for, and what to expect during installation.<\/strong><\/p>\n

      Two-strand twists are an easy-to-achieve style on your natural hair, and the simple technique is the foundation of many twisted styles, like Senegalese. Nolan explains that “this style is created by twisting the natural hair in two strands from the roots to the end.” To keep the twists in place, you need to apply a styling cream or gel to each section. Once the twists are fully dry, Taylor notes that they can be worn as is or later unraveled into a twist-out.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

      Marley twists are made with synthetic Marley hair, which has a thick look and a tight texture. They can be done in any size and are designed to resemble locs. “Marley twists are created by blending natural hair with Marley braiding hair for a textured, full look,” Taylor says, noting that she loves this style for its minimal maintenance needs.\n<\/p>\n

      Nolan adds that “it’s very versatile and can suit all textures, but mainly popularized by fine and medium textures to create that desired fullness outcome.”\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

      Senegalese twists typically use silky braiding hair for a two-strand, rope-like look that has volume. “This style is created by twisting synthetic hair, overlapping natural hair for a polished, smooth outcome,” Nolan explains. Both of our stylists agree that Senegalese twists are perfect for anyone seeking a polished look that requires little maintenance.\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

      The name says it all with this one. Mini twists are tiny, individual twists that are made using only your own natural hair. “Mini twists are made by twisting small sections of natural hair without adding extensions,” Taylor says. “They are lightweight, versatile, and work well for easy updos.”\n<\/p>\n

      “This style is best suited for medium to coarse hair textures,” Nolan says, emphasizing that it’s particularly ideal for those with a busy, on-the-go life and don’t have time to add extensions.\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

      Flat twists, as the name suggests, lie close to the scalp. “Flat twists are created by twisting the hair near the scalp, similar to cornrows, to form a sculpted base,” Taylor explains.\n<\/p>\n

      Both experts agree that any type of textured hair can be styled into flat twists. While they can certainly be worn on their own, they’re convenient for another reason: they make a perfect foundation for protective styling. “This style is ideal for those who want a secure, protective base for wigs or different looks,” Taylor adds.\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

      Love goddess and boho braids? Passion twists have a similar appearance, as they incorporate wavy pieces. “This style is created by adding wavy hair extensions while twisting loosely for that fun, fresh boho look,” Nolan says. With a softer and more effortless appearance than styles such as Senegalese, they’re a lovely option to try.\n<\/p>\n

      “Passion twists are great for creative personalities or for those who are looking to use a protective style for vacation,” Taylor says. Because this look involves lots of textured braiding hair, you don’t need to have incredibly thick hair. However, Nolan adds that the style is best suited for those with medium to coarsely textured hair.\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

      Big and bold, Havana twists use a type of braiding hair that has lots of volume but notably less weight than Marley braiding hair. “Havana twists are made with larger sections of kinky braiding hair to create bold, voluminous twists,” Taylor tells us.\n<\/p>\n

      Nolan recommends trying Havana twists if you have dense, coarse hair, as this will help the braiding hair hold tight in its shape. “This style is best suited for individuals who want a statement look with added protection,” Taylor says.\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

      Born to be bold, jumbo twists get their name from the large sections of hair used to create extra-large twists with braiding hair. “Jumbo twists are installed with large sections of braiding hair to achieve a chunky, dramatic effect,” Taylor says. The bigger sections also mean a shorter salon session compared with smaller twists\u2014a win for anyone who gets restless during an all-day install.\n<\/p>\n

      “Jumbo twists are perfect for bold personalities who want a quick, eye-catching style,” Taylor adds. Nolan notes that jumbo twists work especially well for medium to coarse hair types.\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
