      Music festival season is officially upon us. And while there’s no shortage of Coachella beauty trends to choose from, inspiration is only half of it. Once you’re in the desert, you’ll want a fuss-free look that stays on throughout the sunshine, sweat, and desert dust. It’s a tall order\u2014but fortunately, we have hot tips from perhaps the most qualified individual on the matter: Sarah Tanno, makeup artist to Coachella headliner Lady Gaga. Ahead, Tanno shares her advice (and favorite products) for creating a unique festival beauty look with actual staying power.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

      Choose One Focus Feature for Your Look <\/span><\/h2>\n

      When it comes to Coachella makeup, Tanno recommends to “pick a single focus feature” in your makeup look\u2014such as the eyes or lips. “Pick one thing that you\u2019re not going to fuss over,” she says. By choosing a dramatic eye, lip, or <\/em>cheek look, you only have to worry about touching up one part of your face throughout the day, and can keep the rest of the look low-maintenance. “<\/strong>Something I love and will use a lot of for Coachella is the [Haus Labs] Hy-Power Pigment Paints. You can mix them, customize them, and they’re very waterproof. They will not budge in the hot summer when you’re dancing all night.”\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

      Use a Waterproof Setting Spray <\/span><\/h2>\n

      Setting spray is essential for creating a makeup look that holds up against sun, sweat, and hours of dancing. Look for a waterproof formula, and apply it between each<\/em> layer of your makeup for an added boost (then another spritz once everything is applied). Tanno recommends the One\/Size On ‘Til Dawn Setting Spray, which happens to be one of Byrdie’s top, tested setting sprays, too.\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

      Layer Powder Over Your Cream Products <\/span><\/h2>\n

      Layering a powder formula over your favorite cream can boost staying power without dulling your favorite glowy product. Tanno says to apply your cream highlighter first (exactly as you normally would), then sweep a powder highlight over the same area\u2014the same rule of thumb is true for blush and bronzer. “This is something I did a lot in the “Disease” and “Abracadabra” music videos\u2014it creates a really frosty, metallic finish that I’m very into right now.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

      Use Setting Powder in Controlled Areas <\/span><\/h2>\n

      “You definitely want to set your makeup with apowder, especially in your T-zone area,” says Tanno. “<\/strong>I use a puff with the Haus Labs Bio Blurring Loose Setting Powder; I really work it into the puff, then I just press it only<\/em> into the areas that I want to blur and set.” Tanno recommends applying powder only where you’re particularly oily for a more natural effect. “I’m not someone who will cover the whole face in powder because I like the natural texture of the skin,” she says. “I think it\u2019s really beautiful to still see the sheen.”\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

      Don’t Experiment With New Products <\/span><\/h2>\n

      Spending multiple days in the desert can really wreak havoc on your skin, especially if you aren’t used to the climate. Dehydrated skin, sunburns, and irritation from desert dust are all common skin concerns that can crop up during a music festival. With that being said, it’s not exactly an ideal time to confuse your skin even further<\/em> with a slew of new products. Instead, stick to a simple, consistent skincare routine in the weeks leading up to the music festival, with an emphasis on hydration and skin barrier support. And if you’ll be trying any new makeup products for your look, take them for a test drive at least a month before the event in case of irritation or allergic reaction.\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

      Don’t Skip SPF <\/span><\/h2>\n

      Music festivals aside, SPF is the single-most important product to incorporate into your skincare routine\u2014but it’s of particular importance when spending extensive time outdoors. When attending a music festival this season, be sure to apply a sunscreen that’s labeled as SPF 30 or higher, water-resistant, and broad-spectrum (and reapply every two hours). With so many wearable facial sunscreens on the market, Tanno adds that there are plenty of options that won’t interfere with your makeup, so no excuses.\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
