Pitchfork writer Alphonse Pierre\u2019s<\/em>rap column<\/em>covers songs, mixtapes, albums, Instagram freestyles, memes, weird tweets, fashion trends<\/em>\u2014and anything else that catches his attention.<\/em><\/p>\n

The most unhinged corner of the entire internet just might be Rxk Nephew\u2019s YouTube channel. The unpredictable Rochester, New York rapper has uploaded at least one new song there nearly every day this year\u2014more than 400 total. In the best way possible, most of them are rambling freestyles that sound like they were laid down in a rush before his free trial of the recording software expired.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s no structure or template to this madness, just a complete stream-of-bewildering-consciousness. He usually tells tales of dope dealing, family disarray, and relationship issues when he\u2019s not offering extremely specific and uncalled-for pop culture opinions, or unresearched thoughts on just about every topic being debated on Fox News. Did Joe Biden really win the election? Should we trust the COVID vaccines? Did Chicago drill stalwart Lil Reese really poop himself? (OK, Fox News hasn\u2019t covered that one\u2026 yet.) Sometimes it\u2019s hilarious, sometimes it\u2019s hilariously offensive, sometimes it\u2019s just offensive. His worst songs coast on shock alone, and his best ones also include zany flows and a grab bag of musical inspirations like Memphis horrorcore, 2Pac, East Coast battle rap, and the Based God himself, Lil B. It\u2019s all pretty unsettling and depraved, but there\u2019s a genuine appreciation for hip-hop within it.<\/p>\n

Making things even more bizarre is the fact that Nephew\u2019s diatribes are often set to random amateur beats: In an attempt to make a quick buck, Nephew will rap over any beat a producer sends him for an agreed-upon fee. This has led to an expansion of his creativity as well as a few of the most batshit songs you will come across in all of music right now. Consider this list of the 100 best songs Nephew put out in the last year a mere sampling of the insanity he\u2019s spawned.<\/p>\n

While on \u201cShawty Rxk Too\u201d he\u2019s completely lovestruck, saying all the things people normally say when they\u2019re in their feelings: \u201cMe and bae talking about trappin\u2019 together,\u201d and \u201cBaby girl thick like oatmeal cookies.\u201d Oatmeal cookies are thick as hell.<\/p>\n

      The most effective songs on Crack Dreams<\/em> linger on the mundane elements of drug dealing, like how working such long hours forced him to wear the same outfit for three days straight. The decision to focus on the less glamorous aspects of the lifestyle has been the foundation of like-minded rappers who also had great years: Detroit\u2019s Los and Nutty, Flint\u2019s Grindhard E, and Florida\u2019s Goldenboy Countup.<\/p>\n

      15. \u201cEarly Age Death\u201d<\/div>\n

      This should soundtrack the opening scene of the next Blade<\/em> movie.<\/p>\n

      14. \u201c60 Deep\u201d [ft. Rx Papi]<\/div>\n

      Nephew\u2019s feud with Rx Papi, which lasted through the end of last year and into the start of this one, was more heartbreaking than Seth Rollins turning on the Shield. They were once brothers who spent Thanksgiving together before they began hurling vicious insults at each other. Thankfully, in March, they reunited like nothing ever happened with \u201c60 Deep.\u201d<\/p>\n

      \u201c60 Deep\u201d is more significant, but \u201cAvon Barksdale\u201d is Nephew and Papi\u2019s best track as a duo this year.<\/p>\n

      Neph flexes his rapping chops over Dirty Bird\u2019s Miami Vice<\/em> beats. On \u201cSada Tae,\u201d he follows \u201cCoronavirus real bitch, don\u2019t touch me\u201d with the line, \u201cWalked in my shades on\/Leather jacket on, I look like Blade\/But without that dumbass fade.\u201d And on \u201cSlither Island\u201d he rhymes Blueface with Blueface and then Blueface again. Talent.<\/p>\n

      10. \u201cOverbite Overnights\u201d<\/div>\n

      The beat sounds like it was ripped straight from Mystikal\u2019s funky 1997 LP Unpredictable<\/em>, with day-in-the-life raps (like his mom calling to complain about bills while he\u2019s on tour and cruising around the town to deliver dope) that are colorful enough to play out in your head like a movie. He also claims to be the real founder of DoorDash\u2014tell the Silicon Valley bros to send him a damn check.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

      OK, this song does not actually have an E-40 feature. Instead, Nephew just does an E-40 impression, mimicking the Bay Area legend\u2019s congested voice and speedy delivery. It\u2019s sick.<\/p>\n

      8. \u201cBlackberry Touchscreen\u201d<\/div>\n

      7. \u201cI Forgot the Beat\u201d<\/div>\n

      It\u2019s unclear if this was supposed to be an a cappella or if Neph actually forgot to run the beat. About halfway through, he says he\u2019s going to loop the instrumental, but, of course, nothing happens, because there isn\u2019t one. It doesn\u2019t even sound like a traditional a cappella\u2014it\u2019s almost like he\u2019s rapping in an empty auditorium filled with echoes and dead air. To enhance the experience, I like to picture Neph on stage after hours at Carnegie Hall, in True Religions and wheat Timbs, exposing his enemies for shopping at Marshalls and being illiterate 30 year olds.<\/p>\n

      6. \u201cI Forgot the Beat (House Remix)\u201d<\/div>\n

      More Nephew songs should have house remixes. Speaking of that…<\/p>\n

      5. 4. and 3. \u201cToo Tuff Tone Tarantino,\u201d \u201cPeter Gunnz x2,\u201d and \u201cBeverly Hill Nephew\u201d<\/div>\n

      Nephew\u2019s mixtapes often squander the randomness that makes clicking through his YouTube page so much fun. The one exception is the questionably titled Make Drunk Driving Cool Again<\/em>. It\u2019s basically Neph\u2019s house album: Every song will make you wish you were sweating in a club filled with neon lights and shady dudes trying to sell you pills. Over the smooth groove of \u201cToo Tuff Tone Tarantino,\u201d Neph explains how he keeps in shape: jogging to the liquor store, squatting Henny bottles, and lots of sex. On \u201cPeter Gunnz x2,\u201d he makes a joke out of everything he shouldn\u2019t. On \u201cBeverly Hill Nephew,\u201d he gets so crossfaded that he says he\u2019s lost all feeling in his legs, like Lieutenant Dan. It\u2019s probably the most lyrically demented Nephew project and also the one that sounds the sweetest.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

      Yes, most of the time Rxk Nephew is rattling off incoherent theories or starting beefs with people and corporations who don\u2019t know that he exists, but occasionally real emotions come to the surface. There\u2019s palpable pain behind \u201cShooting Star.\u201d From the opening line\u2014\u201cI thank God I don\u2019t got court cases\u201d\u2014he sounds exhausted as he tries to find the positives in struggles that are mounting by the day.
