May we introduce you to Edith? The flagship bag from Adam Lippes\u2019s debut made-in-France bag collection, Edith is already turning heads at Lippes\u2019s appointment-only Fifth Avenue salon with her trim shoulder strap, hourglass shape, logo-less smooth calf leather exterior, and 18-karat gold-plated clasp closure.<\/p>\n

The designer\u2019s first foray into handbags has been a long time coming\u2014the project began 18 months ago\u2014but only because he was so focused on quality. \u201cIt\u2019s what we\u2019re trying to do with our clothing as well,\u201d Lippes says. \u201cIt\u2019s all the best mills, it\u2019s all the best yarn people. We\u2019re not coming from a business merchandising plan, we\u2019re just trying to make beauty with what we do.\u201d<\/p>\n

Women with closets full of designer bags will appreciate the small collection\u2019s fine details. \u201cAll of the hardware was custom-developed for us,\u201d Lippes says, including the box calf Latch bag\u2019s latches, which make a satisfying click. \u201cThat click,\u201d he laughs, \u201ctook, like, 12 rounds.\u201d Just as much care was taken on the interiors, which are lined in nappa or suede, and luxuriously finished, so they\u2019re delightfully lightweight.<\/p>\n

A soft pebble leather style with double zips (available in two sizes) dubbed Vacances for its casual style and a mini pochette with a chain strap round out the offering, which will only be available in his stores in New York, Palm Beach, and Houston. \u201cI wanted to keep it elevated,\u201d he says, \u201cand it\u2019s also a new project for us, it\u2019s a test.\u201d<\/p>\n

Collection number two is already in the works, but don\u2019t expect an endless scroll of bags. Lippes kept his late mother, an interior designer, in mind as he was developing the line. \u201cI remember back when I grew up, she didn\u2019t have a thousand bags. If it was practical, she\u2019d keep it forever.\u201d She\u2019d approve of the Edith.<\/p>\n
