Three years after Fine Line<\/em>, a new Harry Styles era arrives with open arms. In March, Styles announced his forthcoming third album, Harry\u2019s House.<\/em> The record is seemingly named after the Joni Mitchell song \u201cHarry\u2019s House \/ Centerpiece\u201d off 1975\u2019s The Hissing of Summer Lawns<\/em>; Styles is an avid Joni Mitchell fan who once tracked down her dulcimer maker, and after the announcement, Mitchell\u2019s official Twitter account wrote \u201clove the title\u201d to Styles. Since then, Styles has headlined two nights at Coachella, but has otherwise stayed relatively quiet. Only one single was released in anticipation of the album, the synth pop Tiktok hit \u201cAs It Was,\u201d which boasts an ambitious video. The album itself is similarly low-key, with Styles celebrating all things domestic across 13 breezy tracks.<\/p>\n

In between running Pleasing, a beauty brand that specializes in nail polishes, and promoting his upcoming film roles, Styles will take up residency at five venues across North America for a number of nights. So, welcome to Harry\u2019s House<\/em>\u2014slip off your shoes, and relax on a trendy sofa. Here are some things to know about the new album.<\/p>\n

Harry brings the pop<\/div>\n

While Styles\u2019 2017 debut celebrated classic rock and Fine Line<\/em> embraced \u201970s nostalgia and excess. Harry\u2019s House<\/em> favors a poppier sound with plenty of synthy \u201980s moments and some indie pop touches. The clearest successor to \u201cWatermelon Sugar\u201d\u2019s high-fructose sensuality is trumpet-heavy opener \u201cMusic for a Sushi Restaurant,\u201d which sounds intentionally chintzy and louche as Styles scats.<\/em> There\u2019s also the A-Ha jangle of \u201cAs It Was,\u201d the hip-thrusting \u201cCinema,\u201d and the \u201980s slickness of \u201cDaydreaming.\u201d And contrary to its spiky title, \u201cLittle Freak\u201d is all soft synths as Styles loses himself in the memory of a past relationship.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Harry\u2019s House<\/em> is, appropriately, an album about domesticity. As Styles told Better Homes & Gardens<\/em>, the pandemic put his life on pause for the first time in a decade. After some self-reflection, he \u201crealized that that home feeling isn\u2019t something that you get from a house; it\u2019s more of an internal thing.\u201d That said, much of the action on Harry\u2019s House<\/em> revolves around physical spaces. Wine is tossed back in the garden; cocaine, among other things, is consumed in the kitchen. \u201cKeep Driving\u201d catalogs a laid back L.A. lifestyle filled with edibles, swimming pools, and, confusingly \u201clife hacks going viral in the bathroom.\u201d<\/p>\n

Just let me adore you<\/div>\n

Styles has long been reluctant to share much about his personal life, but here he opens the windows and lets a little bit of light pour in. \u201cCinema,\u201d along with the broken camera on \u201cLate Night Talking\u201d could refer to Styles\u2019 partner, actress and director Olivia Wilde, but his lips are sealed. \u201cSatellite\u201d is all about the gravitational pull of desire, while on \u201cDaylight\u201d he aspires to be a bluebird in order to fly to a faraway love. If this sounds a bit vanilla, Styles gets a little<\/em> risqu\u00e9 on \u201cCinema\u201d: \u201cIf you\u2019re getting yourself wet for me, I guess you\u2019re all mine.\u201d I guess so!<\/p>\n

Guess who\u2019s staying at Harry\u2019s House<\/div>\n

Harry\u2019s House<\/em> reunites Styles with Kid Harpoon and Tyler Johnson, his main production team since his 2017 debut. These 13 tracks were recorded at a handful of studios in Los Angeles, England, and beyond. John Mayer lends his shredding skills to \u201cCinema\u201d and \u201cDaydreaming\u201d; Dev Hynes, who joined Styles for a leather daddy rendition of \u201cWatermelon Sugar\u201d at the 2021 Grammys, plays the cello on \u201cMatilda\u201d; Tobias Jesso Jr., the indie troubadour turned Adele songwriter, co-wrote \u201cBoyfriends,\u201d which also features Ben Harper on guitar.<\/p>\n

\u201cDaydreaming\u201d also features a sample of the Brothers Johnson\u2019s groovy 1978 hit \u201cAin\u2019t We Funkin\u2019 Now,\u201d which was produced by Quincy Jones. And that little voice at the top of \u201cAs It Was\u201d? That\u2019s a voice memo from Styles\u2019 goddaughter Ruby Winston, the child of Ben Winston, an executive producer on Styles\u2019 buddy James Corden\u2019s The Late Late Show.<\/em><\/p>\n
