Whether she\u2019s dumping huge bottles of ketchup into a bowl to make her unique take on gazpacho, hollowing out carrots so she can put candies inside of them, or transcribing the audiobook of Don Quixote<\/em> to write her own version of the epic novel, Ana Fabrega\u2019s Los Espookys<\/em> oddball Tati just might be the most lovably chaotic character on TV right now. Alongside co-creator Julio Torres, the 31-year-old stars as a member of the series\u2019 namesake group of horror aficionados, who run a business staging DIY supernatural experiences. Her character is akin to Betty White\u2019s Rose Nylund from The Golden Girls<\/em>: the kind-hearted glue who holds the gang together, even if she\u2019s a little slow on the uptake. Following one of the most delightful debut seasons in recent memory, Los Espookys<\/em> recently returned for season two, and it remains as endearing and strange as ever.<\/p>\n

In the new episodes, Los Espookys are recruited by everyone from an undertaker in platform boots and pink hair named Oliver Twix who doesn\u2019t bury any of his cemetery\u2019s bodies where they\u2019re supposed to go, all the way to an archeology professor who needs to back up his very unfounded claim that queer people have been wearing one dangly earring for millennia. Tati, meanwhile, becomes an unexpectedly famous author thanks to her Don Quixote<\/em> scheme. Later, she picks up another job creating tracking numbers for packages, meticulously scrawling down codes in a tiny notebook in one of several gags lifted directly from Fabrega\u2019s stand-up routines. \u201cI wanted to give her these jobs and see, emotionally, where she goes when she finds success,\u201d she explains with delight. \u201cAnd she gets cocky!\u201d<\/p>\n

Fabrega, who previously brought her dry, absurdist sense of humor to memorable roles in last year\u2019s Father of the Bride<\/em> remake and The Chris Gethard Show<\/em>, was fed an early musical diet of merengue and salsa from titans like Ruben Blad\u00e9s and Willie Col\u00f3n (plus the occasional Josh Groban song from her mom, she admits with a laugh). Growing up in Scottsdale, Arizona, she would stay up late watching MTV\u2014including a memorable childhood freakout thanks to a run-in with a Red Hot Chili Peppers video\u2014which led to early musical obsessions ranging from death metal to folk to ambient.<\/p>\n

Today Fabrega integrates music into nearly every facet of her life, from cooking to working on new scripts to falling asleep. \u201cI don\u2019t leave my house without headphones,\u201d she says matter-of-factly. Here are some songs Fabrega has had on rotation as of late.<\/p>\n

Ana Fabrega: When Vulnicura<\/em> first came out in 2015, I turned it on in my apartment, and I just started sobbing. I knew the context of the album [about Bj\u00f6rk\u2019s divorce] and I\u2019m just like, Oh, my god, this is devastating and so beautiful.<\/em> It really hit hard. I\u2019ll revisit it every now and then, and recently I\u2019ve been listening to it as I\u2019ve gone through a breakup. When I really wanna go there<\/em> and feel it, I\u2019ll put on this song.<\/p>\n

I mean, hit after hit after hit. It\u2019s so good. When this first came out, I listened to it a million times on repeat and found a new song that I loved every time. I love that there are songs that are so fun and upbeat, like \u201cDespu\u00e9s de la Playa,\u201d and then you have \u201cUn Verano Sin Ti\u201d which is sad\u2014again, because of the breakup, I\u2019ve been listening to that a lot. [laughs<\/em>]<\/p>\n

It\u2019s just such a well-rounded album. I feel like a lot of pop music has been doing this thing where songs will have these radical changes in the middle of them\u2014the Beyonc\u00e9 album has it, the Rosal\u00eda album has it. It\u2019s a trend I really like. It feels so inspired by club music\u2014when I go out to Papi Juice or a party like that, the DJs will treat music like this. It\u2019s cool to see stars incorporating that into their tracks, and people responding so well to it.<\/p>\n

Shabason, Krgovich & Harris: Florence<\/em><\/h2>\n

I\u2019m a big fan of [saxophonist] Joseph Shabason, and I just fell in love with this album. I have such a soft spot for ambient and really tranquil stuff. Since it came out last year, it has been in my top five as far as how many times I listen to it. I\u2019ll never get sick of it.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n
