Few racecar drivers are as fun as Colton Herta. The 22-year-old IndyCar star has become a fan favorite thanks to his blistering speed, daring overtakes, and wild, wet-weather drifting. He\u2019s the youngest race winner in IndyCar history, after a victory in 2019, when he was just 19. As far as we know, he\u2019s also the only driver in the series who moonlights as the drummer in a punk band.\u00a0<\/p>\n

When he\u2019s not racing, Herta keeps time for the\u00a0Zibs, a band he formed with two friends a few years ago, which released its debut full-length and played a handful of West Coast shows earlier this year. \u201cI\u2019m so wrapped up in driving: all of my focus, week to week, is on the next race,\u201d Herta says from his home in California, where he\u2019s enjoying a rare day off. \u201cIt\u2019s nice to have something that can dial me back and take me away from that.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Earlier this year, with Formula 1 surging in popularity in the U.S., Herta seemed poised to become the first American driver since 2015 to join the world\u2019s most prestigious race series. Multiple teams were eyeing him, but a snag in meeting Formula 1\u2019s strict requirements for obtaining a racing license meant he won\u2019t be competing internationally in 2023. That\u2019s no problem for Herta, who promptly signed an extension with his IndyCar team in the hopes of finally winning his first championship. He remains one of the most talked-about drivers in the world, a top Formula 1 prospect, and a perennial favorite to win the Indianapolis 500, which is his ultimate racing goal.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Music has always been important for Herta, who often assembles playlists to accompany his daily routines. He needs something uptempo but melodic for his workout sessions, which include grueling 12-mile runs. His cross-country plane rides\u2014which happen a bit more frequently than he\u2019d like\u2014require something more low-key. And for his pre-race warmups, he usually listens to music that\u2019s just like his cars:\u00a0fast.<\/em>\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m usually playing something by Dead Kennedys, Suicidal Tendencies, or Black Flag,\u201d he says. \u201cSomething fast and\u00a0very<\/em> loud.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Colton Herta: Can you even print this band\u2019s name in your article? These guys are badass. I got to see them for the first time this year. This definitely is a song that\u2019s going in my ears before I get in the racecar. They amp me up so much. Keith Morris, the lead singer, is amazing. He was in his 20s back in the \u201980s, so\u2026 he\u2019s quite a bit older now! But he\u2019s up there acting like a young kid on stage. This just gets me in the right mindset, ready to go race.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Alex G:\u00a0\u201cTreehouse\u201d<\/h2>\n

This song is definitely\u00a0not<\/em>\u00a0something I listen to before a race. This is more for a relaxing car ride. I\u2019m very fortunate that I also race for BMW, so I get a loaner car from them every year. So I drive a BMW M4, which is amazing, and it has such a great sound system that\u2019s perfect for this song.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

I\u2019ve been a fan of Alex G for a while, and he\u2019s really hitting his stride. It\u2019s been great to see him getting so popular lately. He\u2019s incredibly great at guitar and just any instrument he plays, really.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Tame Impala: \u201cElephant\u201d<\/h2>\n

Everyone knows \u201cThe Less I Know the Better,\u201d but I love \u201cElephant.\u201d I got to see them live in San Francisco last year, which was a treat. Kevin Parker is great on drums, great on guitars, and all the synths\u2014just amazing. Really high-end performance with great fan interaction and stage presence.<\/p>\n

Matty Greg: \u201cAs It Was\u201d (Harry Styles cover in the style of the Strokes)<\/h2>\n

The Strokes are probably the closest I get to listening to pop music. I also like that new Harry Styles song, whatever it\u2019s called. And there\u2019s a great\u00a0cover of it that sounds just like the Strokes by this artist Matty Greg.<\/p>\n

The Strokes are always a go-to for me, along with the Arctic Monkeys. The whole\u00a0Is This It?<\/em> album was incredible. Their music is probably more for when I\u2019m in the airport traveling. They\u2019re just amazing musicians, guys who have been grinding for a long time.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n
