Richmond rappers Monday Night and 3WaySlim are not the first to spit about turning a past moving drugs into a brighter future, but their collaborative EP Good Company gives the duo’s accounts a bespoke sheen that’s hard to resist. Little things pop out on “Dawned On Me”: the voices in 3Way’s head telling him to reconsider selling dope that’s “cut like some Neosporin,” the pause near the end of Monday Night’s verse as he turns to point out the people “hating …over there.” It’s all tied together by their balance of sophistication and ferocity, which can be felt down to the song’s hook: “These some red bottoms/Blood on the streets, these some red bottoms.”

With artists releasing songs at a fast and furious pace, it’s difficult for the average hip-hop head to keep track of it all—no matter how tapped in they are. That’s why we created The Ones, a daily post to highlight the song you need to hear.
