Detroit rapper-producer Nolan FKA may have started out as a bruiser, but intimacy is now his secret weapon. He’s softened the breakneck, traditionalist approach of his early projects, gradually exploring melody and flow over plush, minimal production. His latest album, Don’t Get Too Excited, is a journey through new love, as leisurely and flirtatious as a winking text thread. With a guest verse from Kelly Moonstone, “ILY” is like a steamy, late-night phone call out of Spike Lee’s Girl 6, all body rubs and feeding each other fruit while laid out on the beach. Producer Brando Heat’s piano chords, synths, and soft kick drums keep the atmosphere playful while Nolan FKA and Moonstone’s words waft through the air like incense.

With artists releasing songs at a fast and furious pace, it’s difficult for the average hip-hop head to keep track of it all—no matter how tapped in they are. That’s why we created The Ones, a daily post to highlight the song you need to hear.
