tracks spanning 77 minutes, from the monumental recent single “A&W,” which includes a gum-snapping outro that nods back to her earlier work, to “Taco Truck x VB,” featuring a previously unheard alternate version of “Venice Bitch,” from her 2019 masterpiece Norman Fucking Rockwell! After years of filling her songs with savvy references to the history of pop music, it feels apt that she’s so overtly calling back to her own work here.

Since Lana’s previous record, 2021’s Blue Banisters, which made her the artist with the most No. 1s on Billboard’s Alternative Albums chart, she appeared on “Snow on the Beach” off Taylor Swift’s Midnights, released a wafting ballad called “Watercolor Eyes” for the HBO series Euphoria, and heard her 2017 track “White Mustang” covered by one of her heroes, Cat Power. But then, last October, Lana announced on Instagram that a laptop, three video cameras, and multiple hard drives were stolen from her car, leading to leaks of unfinished songs and the loss of a manuscript for an upcoming book. And now, after those ups and downs, she is back with another transmission from the Lana-verse. Here are five takeaways.

It’s Lana’s world (and she’s living in it)

On recent records, Lana has moved away from the hyper-curated imagery of her early days—femme-fatale melancholy, romantic Americana, ambiguous nihilism—towards more autobiographical songwriting. “When I did Norman Fucking Rockwell! it was about world-building, whereas this was straight vibing,” she recently told Billie Eilish in an Interview cover story. Accordingly, the songs on Ocean Blvd are freewheeling explorations of perception and identity that feel particularly spontaneous.

For insight into where Lana’s mind is at these days, consider the title’s source of inspiration. There is indeed a tunnel under Ocean Boulevard in Long Beach, California. Originally built as an underground walkway to the beach, the Jergins Tunnel has been closed since the late ’60s. In an interview with Rolling Stone, Lana explained how the mothballed passage related to the album’s themes. “Would it be a worrisome concept to be boxed out and sealed up with all these beautiful things inside with no one able to gain access except maybe family,” she said. “Would it probably, plausibly, get to the point where it became a body of work that made me a vessel that was sequestered to the point where only family would have access to the metaphorical tunnel?”

The Grant family reunion soundtrack

On opening track “The Grants,” Lana (née Elizabeth Grant) establishes family as a central throughline on the album and in her life: “Doin’ the hard stuff, I’m doin’ my time/I’m doin’ it for us, for our family line.” Later, on “Fingertips,” she ruminates on people and places who have impacted her 37 years on Earth: an uncle who died in Rocky Mountain National Park; a childhood sweetheart from Lake Placid, New York who was killed in a car accident at age 23; the memories of tears shed in Monaco. Poignantly, she reflects on a troubled relationship with her mom (“What kind of mother was she to say I’d end up in institutions?”) while also asking maternal questions of herself. Then there’s “Grandfather Please Stand on the Shoulders of My Father While He’s Deep-Sea Fishing,” which paints a lingering familial picture with its title alone.

Did You Know That There’s a Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd

Lana Del Rey

Read the Review

A guest list only Lana could put together

Ocean Blvd once again reunites Lana with Norman Fucking Rockwell! and Chemtrails Over the Country Club producer Jack Antonoff, but he is one of several people who contributed to the album’s sound. Lana’s ex-boyfriend, cameraman Mike Hermosa, also appears as a producer and writer. The pair wrote a handful of songs together during informal Sunday-afternoon sessions including “The Grants,” the title track, “Let the Light In,” “Peppers,” and “Taco Truck x VB.”

The album features the most guests on a Lana record since 2017’s Lust for Life. Father John Misty stops by for the duet “Let the Light In.” “The Grants” begins with vocals from Whitney Houston’s former backup singers Melodye Perry and Pattie Howard. “Judah Smith Interlude” includes four-and-a-half minutes of a sermon from the titular pastor of the celebrity-approved megachurch Churchome, who previously appeared on Justin Bieber’s 2021 Freedom EP. Jon Batiste appears on “Candy Necklace” and “Jon Batiste Interlude” (“I rarely have new friends sit at my old piano,” Lana said of the composer in a note to fans). “Paris, Texas” features piano from SYML, the solo venture of Brian Fennell, previously of the indie rock group Barcelona. The Franco-British pianist Riopy contributes keys to “Grandfather Please Stand…” And Antonoff sings on “Margaret,” which makes sense considering that the song was written as an ode to his fiancée, actress Margaret Qualley. “Peppers” samples Canadian rapper Tommy Genesis’ 2015 track “Angelina,” which appeared on her album World Vision. Phew!

Lana the role model

In the early years of her career, Lana was often maligned for what some critics considered to be unempowering feminism. By 2017, honest storytelling about complex inner worlds in the Lana mold became popular—and lucrative—in pop music. In an interview with Pitchfork from that year, Lana noted her role in this shift, saying, “There was just such a long time where people had to fit into that pop box.” Now, a younger generation of songwriters are giving Lana her flowers for pushing the boundaries and staying true to herself. “People have been trying to look and sound like you since you first started,” Eilish told her. “You changed the way the music industry hears and sees music, and you changed the way people sing.”

Similarly, earlier this month, Olivia Rodrigo awarded Lana with the Visionary Award at the 2023 Billboard Women in Music Awards.
