OEM Tech: How To Remove The Shock On A 2019 Honda CRF450R 6

When we get new bikes, it is obviously more fun to focus on the changes we feel on the track. But there are also changes in the garage. Here is the best way that we have found to remove the shock from a 2019 Honda CRF450R.

I have not owned a modern 4 stroke MX bike, so seeing a new Honda come apart is very interesting to me. It reminds me of working on my RC51 really. I can get the shock off my two stroke CR in about a minute…. There are lots of parts on a 450f that aren’t there on an older CR!

How do you feel about pulling the swingarm to allow the shock to drop out through the bottom?

Break chain, remove brake pedal and master cylinder, swingarm bolt, pull rod bolt, shock bolts, and the rear end comes off. Remove number plates, muffler bolts, bottom subframe bolts, loosen top subframe bolts and subframe lifts enough to release the piggyback reservoir and shock comes out the bottom.

That was the best tech video I’ve ever seen. Easy to understand articulated flawlessly. I have taken apart and reassembled countless Hondas and I actually picked up on some great ideas. I especially like the tip on loading the rear suspension when tightening the shock bolts. Hopefully that will help to extend the life of the heim joint at the top of a shock and reduce the dreaded Honda clank when you pick the bike up off the stand.
