Released tomorrow (July 28), Halo: Campaign Evolved is a “modern evolution” of the original Halo game that has been “thoughtfully brought to life” in Unreal Engine 5 with new 4K visuals, updated animations and re-recorded voice lines. The remake features a refreshed take on the original Halo game’s single-player mode, but multiplayer has been left off Campaign Evolved.

Halo Studios has also included a roster of beloved weapons and vehicles from later Halo titles, and added three new bonus campaign missions, “all designed to expand and celebrate the adventure that started it all.”

Halo: Campaign Evolved launches tomorrow but players who pre-ordered have been playing since last week (July 23) and some have already completed the game and unlocked a secret ending.

A bonus cut-scene can be unlocked once you beat Halo: Campaign Evolved on the hardest Legendary mode. It sees Sgt. Johnson relaxing on a beach, smoking a cigar and watching footage of the original 2001 game on a handheld device. “Those were the days,” he says before seeing an explosion in the distance and a Pelican craft flying overhead. “Well, that’s my cue,” he tells the audience. “See you in the sequel.”

Shortly after Halo: Campaign Evolved was announced, a number of leakers claimed that “full” remakes of both 2004’s Halo 2 and 2007’s Halo 3 were in the works, though their multiplayer modes reportedly won’t be included either.  “We’re not trying to replace what is a masterpiece in the original,” said executive producer Damon Conn in an interview with Windows Central about the lack of multiplayer in Halo: Campaign Evolved. “We’re trying to basically make something that stands kind of shoulder to shoulder with it, using new tools, new energy, to get a little bit of a fresh take on some things, but honouring the legacy.”

Last month, original Halo composer and voice director Marty O’Donnell confirmed that he had a “short” conversation about Tom Cruise taking on the role of Master Chief for Halo 2 but it didn’t work out. “I knew that would have ruined everything,” he explained. “I know game fans are not necessarily blown away by big stars, they’re blown away by solid gameplay and emotionally compelling stories.”

In other news, brand new Tomb Raider adventure game Catalyst has been quietly delayed to 2028.
