Lake Placid hosted the 1932 and 1980 Winter Olympic Games, and this Fourth of July, the Olympic venues surrounding the town have several great events planned. Whiteface Mountain will offer Cloudsplitter Gondola Rides, the Whiteface Veterans’ Memorial Highway, Disc Golf, and hiking. The ski resort will also be hosting the Whiteface Mountain Races on the same day. The race boasts more vertical gain and loss per mile than possibly any other race in the United States, other than the Mt. Marathon in Alaska.
The Marshak Mountain Race course will use mountain utility roads, grassy and/or hummocky slopes, and a blend of ascents and descents at roughly 40 percent grade, covering roughly 3,900 feet of gain and loss over 6.2 miles (10 kilometers). For those athletes who really want a challenge, take a second lap, which will increase those totals to 7,800 feet of gain over 12.5 miles (20 kilometers). It is a tough and brutal mountain race that features great views of the Adirondack High Peaks, in the historic footsteps of Olympians who also pushed themselves on the same mountain.
For those who are looking to relax on this holiday weekend, the Olympic Center and the Lake Placid Olympic Museum will be open. Both have been recently upgraded and renovated over the past several years, and are a must-visit for anyone who enjoys learning about history and the Winter Olympics. There will be inline skating available on the Olympic Speed Skating Oval, which is located right next to the Olympic Center and Museum. It is an outdoor venue that blends perfectly with all the Fourth of July activities that will be spread out across Lake Placid.
Mt Van Hoevenberg has been at the heart of winter sports history for nearly a century, hosting events such as the bobsled, luge, skeleton, biathlon, and cross-Country skiing. The competition and training complex will be open on the Fourth of July, where people can check out the Cliffside Coaster, the indoor climbing wall, Legacy Tours, cross-country biking, hiking, and discover biathlon.
The Olympic Jumping Complex is one of those Olympic venue sites that a person will probably never forget once they see it for the first time. It is one of Lake Placid’s most iconic venues and a centerpiece of the region’s winter sports legacy. It is home to world-class ski jumping facilities. The complex features two Olympic-sized towers, three smaller jumps for youth development, and offers year-round visitor experiences. It also offers the Skyride gondola, which provides access to the jump towers, giving visitors a close look at the scale and engineering behind ski jumping. The Sky Flyer Zipline adds an interactive element, allowing guests to experience a controlled version of the jumpers’ descent.
The best deal to see all these Olympic Venues is to purchase the Lake Placid Legacy Sites Passport. The Pass allows access to the Whiteface Cloudsplitter Gondola, Whiteface Veterans’ Memorial Highway, the Olympic Jumping Complex SkyRide, the Olympic Center’s Lake Placid Olympic Museum, the Mt Van Hoevenberg Legacy Tour, as well as different discounts and events.
Additionally, the Olympic Authority will be participating in the town’s Fourth of July Parade on Main Street. It starts at 11:12 a.m. with a military flyover by the Vermont National Guard of four F-35 Lightning II aircraft over Lake Placid. Live music in Mid’s Park from 1 to 4 p.m. featuring the All Night Boogie Band, which is an award-winning blues, rock, and soul-inspired band. The Fourth of July Parade begins at 5 p.m. down the historic Main Street of Lake Placid with special appearances from local Olympians who will be in attendance.
The day will end with Lake Placid’s Set the Night to Music Fireworks Spectacular, which will light up the skies over Mirror Lake at 9:30 p.m. This popular event annually draws several thousand people, so get there early and grab a spot on the shore of Mirror Lake. The Fourth of July weekend at Lake Placid is chock full of entertainment and events that someone can participate in, that it should definitely be at the top of the list of places to go this year.
